Bette Midler, Danny DeVito, Judge Reinhold, Helen Slater (and Bill Pullman). That's definitely a deep cut though, not really a classic, so maybe that's something you just watch on your own.

My favorite part of that scene, if you've never noticed it before, is that Rick Moranis just yells at the soldiers combing the desert, but uses the bullhorn on Colonel Sanders who is right next to him!
The main thing was that Mel Brooks wasn’t allowed to create ANY merchandise off of this film since Lucas profited so much from the Star Wars films, hence the jokes about merchandising in the film
@@LThompson59 Almost correct: although the movie was indeed made with Lucas' blessing, and ILM did make the dancing alien, Apogee did all the other FX. Apogee was not affiliated with George Lucas or Lucasfilm, but a lot of the guys working there were Star Wars veterans (when Lucas moved ILM from Los Angeles to San Francisco to begin working on Empire Strikes Back, quite a few guys either chose to stay in LA or weren't asked to carry on. They stayed in ILM's old facility and formed Apogee).

fun but sick fact. the pizza was real pizza and by the end of shooting, it wasn't smelling so good anymore because of the heat that day, it started to mold. another fun fact, I regularly say "I'm surrounded by assholes" while I'm working, driving around the city all day.
The dancing alien is also a reference to the dancing & singing frog, now known as "Michigan J. Frog," from the old Warner Bros. cartoon short "One Froggy Evening" where he did the same song and dance with a cane and tophat. He later became the mascot for the WB channel (now the CW) in the 90s and early 2000s.
I'm not certain but I think I read somewhere that Tim Russ read for the part of Geordi LaForge on Star Trek TNG but the part went to Levar Burton instead but several years later he would be cast as Tuvok on Voyager. A great choice Tim Russ really embodied the character perfectly.

When they talked with George Lucas for permission to do a Star Wars parody, he Loved the script. He gave his consent and even offered to let them use his special effects company to do the space scenes, this is why they look so good. His one condition for all of this, is that the is to be No Merchandising for the film at all. ( so it never got confused with the star wars Merchandising) This is the reason for the running gags all through the film....

The alien doing the song and dance made me laugh the hardest I've ever laughed in a movie theatre! Mel got George Lucas's blessing to do the parody on the condition that there would be no Spaceballs merchandising! ILM also did the visual effects for the movie. Over the years there have been many rumblings about a sequel but Mel didn't seem to keen on it. Some of the titles were Spaceballs 3: The Search for Spaceballs 2 and Spaceballs 2: The Search for More Money. One of the stages they shot the movie on was at the old MGM Studios (now Sony) where the Wizard of Oz was filmed. It's not nearly as zany as his later stuff, but The Producers is a good one, earning Mel his only Academy Award. The musical version written by Mel swept the Tony Awards, winning the most awards in history, including one for Best Score for Mel. Bootlegs of the show are around here (check out Springtime for Hitler, if anything!)

The part where President Skroob sits on the bear's lap inside the escape pod and then the bear waves goodbye to him through the window. That part always scarred me for life when I was little, but now it doesn't anymore being 17 years old. Still, this is one of my 7 ALL-TIME favorite movies! Damn I saw this movie in a theater when I was 16. Perfect age for it. Since you and the wife like 80s comedies, I got a few classics from the era that deserve your attention: -Back To School (with Rodney Dangerfield) -This Is Spinal Tap (greatest ever mockumentary) -Stripes (with Bill Murray & John Candy) -Strange Brew (Rick Morannis!) -The Jerk (with Steve Martin...and technically a 1979 film, but let's keep it in this list) Happy New Year. I think Mel Brooks missed one quick cameo that could very easily have happened in the movie. When Dark Helmet says "I always have coffee when I watch radar", they should have had Gary Burghoff, Radar from the long-running show MASH, walk on. Heck, they had the twins from the Doublemint commercials in the movie; why not?
I didn't see anyone bringing it up so I might as well. The insert on my DVD copy of Spaceballs has Mel joking "This was the first time I directed a helmet with legs" and I don't remember where, but I swear I read somewhere that, the first time Mel Brooks saw Rick Moranis in costume, he said something like "My God, I'm directing a walking helmet!"
George Lucas actually liked Spaceballs very much. According to Mel Brooks he wasn't allowed to merchandise the movie as part of the deal being so close to the Star Wars franchise. However, Industrial Light and Magic( ILM ) assisted them with the special effects and post-production. I found that to be really cool! Great reactions from you both. A great story about the making of this movie was told by Rob Paulson (he's the voice actor who did such iconic characters like Pinky from Pinky and the Brain, Yakko Warner, he was Raphael on the original TMNT in the 80's, and still does roles to this day), who was a writer on the movie along with Phil Hartman (R.I.P.) and Tress McNeil. He said that one day Mel Brooks comes into a meeting and says "I gotta give a name to one of these "Dinks", the little guys. I got a shit ton of midgets and we're going to refer back to him later on..." so Paulson offers a suggestion because that particular "Dink" gave Bull Pullman some water, that they call him "Gunga-Dink", a play off the famous Rudyard Kipling poem of Gunga Din, a water carrierin the poem. Apparently Brooks was not impressed, and after asking Paulson's name he said, "Let me tell ya somethin', Rob. In my line of work, wit is shit, funny is money!" and moved onto someone else's idea. Most people who have heard the story think that Brooks was being a bit of an asshole and pissed off that he didn't think of it himself, which is possible. Who really knows what happened, though.
Trivia: In the "combing-the-desert" scene, the African-American Spaceball who declares "We ain't found shit!!" is Tim Russ...who would eventually become Tuvok on *Star Trek: Voyager* .
Before Rick Moranis (Honey, I Shrunk the Kids, Ghostbusters I & II) & John Candy (Uncle Buck, Plane Trains & Automobiles) found movie success. Both found success on the TV skit comedy SCTV (a spoof of a television station)that was produced for Canadian viewers. Which found success in America too.
Michael Wilmslow and his sound effects never gets old. Private - I've lost the bleeps, I've lost sweeps and I've lost the creeps. Helmet - That's not all he has lost. Private - Sir the radar, it appears to be....jammed. Helmet - Jammed?! (wipes the screen and takes a lick) Helmet - Raspberry.......There's only one man, who would dare give me the raspberry (puts helmet) Lone Star!

Fun trivia:Per an agreement set between Mel Brooks and George Lucas, Brooks agreed not to sell any merchandise (the novel was the only exception). This was primarily set in place since Lucas was still raking in millions of dollars through mostly toy sales at the time. Yet, even though Mel Brooks agreed to the no selling of merchandise clause, he never agreed to not make fun of it. This contract led to the infamous scene in Spaceballs where Yogurt (played by Mel Brooks) does his “Merchandising, Merchandising” monologue. However, making fun of lunch boxes and cereal containing 100 percent sugar with the Spaceballs name attached to it wasn’t enough. Brooks had to go to the extreme which led to “Spaceballs the flame thrower.” Ironically, George Lucas got a good laugh from the bit and even complimented Brooks on his creativity Fun trivia: Sir John Hurt claimed that Mel Brooks talked him into self-parodying his role from Alien (1979) by making it sound like it would be a brief walk-on cameo. Only when Hurt came to the set did he realize that the entire scene was an elaborate spoof of the chestburster scene from Alien (1979). Hurt figured that he ought to have asked for a salary

This spoofed so many films - Star Wars, Planet of the Apes, Star Trek, Alien and even The Wizard of Oz. The line-up of the characters as they approach Yogurt is identical to the one when they were in that film (L-R Scarecrow, Dorothy, Tinman and Cowardly Lion) with Yogurt replacing the Wizard.
Mel Brooks wanted to avoid stepping on any toes when he came up with 1987's Spaceballs - a clever spin on the original Star Wars trilogy. He got in touch with George Lucas to pitch the idea, and while the director gave the thumbs up, he outlined one key condition of their deal that Brooks had to adhere to.
Spaceballs 2 is so much needed. The main characters are still decent looking, even Mel Brooks is alive, they could surely made a spoof of the New Star Wars movies of some kind. Rick Moranis just announced that he is doing a "Honey I shrunk the kids" movie, why not a second spaceballs, too.
"The Producers" and "History Of The World Part I" are must-watch Mel Brooke's movies. Also I recommend Men In Tights, which is hilarious especially if you've seen the classic 1938 Robin Hood with Errol Flyn.

One of my favorite movies of all time. Mel Brooks said in an interview that Rick Moranis was the one who recommended John Candy for the role of Barf. They had worked together on SCTV in Canada back in the late ‘70’s.

I made a similar comment on your Casino video and I couldn’t help myself with this one either- the guy that tells Lonestar how to do the Vulcan neck pinch is Dick Warlock who played Michael Myers in Halloween 2 as well as the cattle prod security guard in Casino, the stunt double in the shark cage in Jaws, and stunt double for Kurt Russell in The Thing (that’s also his shadow you see on the wall when the dog walks in the room), Escape from New York, and Big Trouble in Little China. I met him at a horror convention years ago and he’s one of the nicest guys you could ever meet!

Great movie.The parody on Alien was in the end with the diner scene. They even brought the same actor John Heard for that scene. Other great Mel Brooks spoof movies are : Robin Hood Men in tights and High Anxiety which is a spoof on classic Alfred Hitchcock movies like Psycho or The Birds which you obviously have to see before seeing it .
Bill Pullman was hilarious in a movie called Ruthless People with Danny DeVito and Bette Midler. It’s from 86 and made by Abrahms Zucker and Zucker from Airplane, buts it’s not a slapstick comedy. It actually has a good story.
Michael Winslow is amazing he easily had one of the smallest an funniest parts in the movie. You have to check out Police Academy...its so underrated these days

Some of the titles were Spaceballs 3: The Search for Spaceballs 2 and Spaceballs 2: The Search for More Money. One of the stages they shot the movie on was at the old MGM Studios (now Sony) where the Wizard of Oz was filmed. It's not nearly as zany as his later stuff, but The Producers is a good one, earning Mel his only Academy Award. The musical version written by Mel swept the Tony Awards, winning the most awards in history, including one for Best Score for Mel. The dancing alien, I know, right. I did the same thing in the cinema. I couldn't stop laughing for about 10 mins after. I had to sorta hold it in though, it must have looked like I had a coughing fit!

The part where President Skroob sits on the bear's lap inside the escape pod and then the bear waves goodbye to him through the window. That part always scarred me for life when I was little, but now it doesn't anymore being 17 years old.

Damn I saw this movie in a theater when I was 16. Perfect age for it. Since you and the wife like 80s comedies, I got a few classics from the era that deserve your attention:

-Stripes (with Bill Murray & John Candy)
-Strange Brew (Rick Morannis!)

I think Mel Brooks missed one quick cameo that could very easily have happened in the movie. When Dark Helmet says "I always have coffee when I watch radar", they should have had Gary Burghoff, Radar from the long-running show MASH, walk on. Heck, they had the twins from the Doublemint commercials in the movie; why not?
Gary Burhgoff kinda wanted to get away from the Radar character though, he probably wouldn't have done it
Pizza the Hut's outfit was covered with a real pizza. Bill Pullman was also in "Sleepless In Seattle" a classic.

I didn't see anyone bringing it up so I might as well. The insert on my DVD copy of Spaceballs has Mel joking "This was the first time I directed a helmet with legs" and I don't remember where, but I swear I read somewhere that, the first time Mel Brooks saw Rick Moranis in costume, he said something like "My God, I'm directing a walking helmet!"
You can catch Bill Pullman in Casper. John Hurt played Kane in Alien and again in Space Balls, he also played Ollivander in the Harry Potter movies.
George Lucas actually liked Spaceballs very much. According to Mel Brooks he wasn't allowed to merchandise the movie as part of the deal being so close to the Star Wars franchise. However, Industrial Light and Magic( ILM ) assisted them with the special effects and post-production. I found that to be really cool! Great reactions from you both. A great story about the making of this movie was told by Rob Paulson (he's the voice actor who did such iconic characters like Pinky from Pinky and the Brain, Yakko Warner, he was Raphael on the original TMNT in the 80's, and still does roles to this day), who was a writer on the movie along with Phil Hartman (R.I.P.) and Tress McNeil. He said that one day Mel Brooks comes into a meeting and says "I gotta give a name to one of these "Dinks", the little guys. I got a shit ton of midgets and we're going to refer back to him later on..." so Paulson offers a suggestion because that particular "Dink" gave Bull Pullman some water, that they call him "Gunga-Dink", a play off the famous Rudyard Kipling poem of Gunga Din, a water carrierin the poem.
Apparently Brooks was not impressed, and after asking Paulson's name he said, "Let me tell ya somethin', Rob. In my line of work, wit is shit, funny is money!" and moved onto someone else's idea. Most people who have heard the story think that Brooks was being a bit of an asshole and pissed off that he didn't think of it himself, which is possible. Who really knows what happened, though.
Trivia: In the "combing-the-desert" scene, the African-American Spaceball who declares "We ain't found shit!!" is Tim Russ...who would eventually become Tuvok on *Star Trek: Voyager* .
Before Rick Moranis (Honey, I Shrunk the Kids, Ghostbusters I & II) & John Candy (Uncle Buck, Plane Trains & Automobiles) found movie success. Both found success on the TV skit comedy SCTV (a spoof of a television station)that was produced for Canadian viewers. Which found success in America too.

Fun trivia:Per an agreement set between Mel Brooks and George Lucas, Brooks agreed not to sell any merchandise (the novel was the only exception). This was primarily set in place since Lucas was still raking in millions of dollars through mostly toy sales at the time. Yet, even though Mel Brooks agreed to the no selling of merchandise clause, he never agreed to not make fun of it.
This contract led to the infamous scene in Spaceballs where Yogurt (played by Mel Brooks) does his “Merchandising, Merchandising” monologue. However, making fun of lunch boxes and cereal containing 100 percent sugar with the Spaceballs name attached to it wasn’t enough. Brooks had to go to the extreme which led to “Spaceballs the flame thrower.”
Ironically, George Lucas got a good laugh from the bit and even complimented Brooks on his creativity
Fun trivia: Sir John Hurt claimed that Mel Brooks talked him into self-parodying his role from Alien (1979) by making it sound like it would be a brief walk-on cameo. Only when Hurt came to the set did he realize that the entire scene was an elaborate spoof of the chestburster scene from Alien (1979). Hurt figured that he ought to have asked for a salary

Perfect that the radar guy is Michael Winslow, the guy who did the sound effects voices in the Police Academy movies.
This spoofed so many films - Star Wars, Planet of the Apes, Star Trek, Alien and even The Wizard of Oz. The line-up of the characters as they approach Yogurt is identical to the one when they were in that film (L-R Scarecrow, Dorothy, Tinman and Cowardly Lion) with Yogurt replacing the Wizard.
The mega maid was because Mel Brooks took his grandkids to see Transformers the animated film.

Spaceballs 2 is so much needed. The main characters are still decent looking, even Mel Brooks is alive, they could surely made a spoof of the New Star Wars movies of some kind. Rick Moranis just announced that he is doing a "Honey I shrunk the kids" movie, why not a second spaceballs, too.

One of my favorite movies of all time. Mel Brooks said in an interview that Rick Moranis was the one who recommended John Candy for the role of Barf. They had worked together on SCTV in Canada back in the late ‘70’s.

I made a similar comment on your Casino video and I couldn’t help myself with this one either- the guy that tells Lonestar how to do the Vulcan neck pinch is Dick Warlock who played Michael Myers in Halloween 2 as well as the cattle prod security guard in Casino, the stunt double in the shark cage in Jaws, and stunt double for Kurt Russell in The Thing (that’s also his shadow you see on the wall when the dog walks in the room), Escape from New York, and Big Trouble in Little China. I met him at a horror convention years ago and he’s one of the nicest guys you could ever meet!

Great movie.The parody on Alien was in the end with the diner scene. They even brought the same actor John Heard for that scene. Other great Mel Brooks spoof movies are : Robin Hood Men in tights and High Anxiety which is a spoof on classic Alfred Hitchcock movies like Psycho or The Birds which you obviously have to see before seeing it .
Bill Pullman was hilarious in a movie called Ruthless People with Danny DeVito and Bette Midler. It’s from 86 and made by Abrahms Zucker and Zucker from Airplane, buts it’s not a slapstick comedy. It actually has a good story.
