    There probably won't be a beginner friendly source based distro, because a new user probably will never have a need for what a source based distributions offers, or the ability to take advantage. There is absolutely no intersection between these kinds of users. Its almost an oxymoronic notion.

    I think one thing to note is the vast majority of Linux users (that watch Linux videos on RUclips) don't actually use the tools they install tbh. Do you really need every package to be bleeding edge? Does it actually make a difference or does it just make you feel "up to date"? For most Unix users that actually use their systems for dev/build purposes, they don't need or want their packages to change unless it's actually an important upgrade.
    If you really need the latest Firefox or whatever, Gentoo doesn't stop you.
    After years in Linux I've realized there are two main groups:
    - the programmers that use something like Ubuntu with gnome because they simply don't care, and
    - the (kernel) devs or who use Gentoo because they happen to also be Linux enthusiasts
    Everyone else is just a Linux enthusiast. Don't get me wrong I love ppl like this and I think of myself as one still. But if you're not actually using Linux for another reason, don't bash a distro that is not at all targeted for you. Gentoo is not designed for you to have "the perfect rice" and the "coolest" new features.

    KISS Linux is pretty cool, I had no idea a fully working basic desktop (not just wm) could run with such few packages.

    i mean you can run gentoo on a thinkpad if you use distcc to offload the compiling onto your gaming rig, also you can compile and run a custom linux kernel on any distro.

      Once you install LFS you realize you need a way to manage updates.. that's actually the hardest part. So you write some program to manage your packages and their updates.
      Something kinda like portage... But unless you're a galaxy-brain, you'd be better off just using Gentoo and portage.

    Gentoo is already the future of Linux as Google Android is based on Gentoo Prefix.

    Endeavour is really simple... its like an installer and a few helpers and then just uses everything Arch, but they wanted to slap their own name on it and call it a Distro. Almost every Endeavour person I have talked to is more of a jerk about their OS than Arch users.

    • @folksurvival
      @folksurvival 2 года назад +1

      It's not even necessary because the Archilinuxgui project exists, which is a simple installer for pure Arch with either a themed or pure desktop of your choice. I'm still surprised it's not more popular.

    I actually installed gentoo on a thinkpad before but never talked about since i put no attention in the masking system and now i get a really weird compiling errors, maybe next week I will finish it. 25:25 “A multi-party computation to prevent a single entity-browser, advertisers, or websites-to learn about the user behavior” does not seem that helpful. It sounds like it just forces the parties to work together to spy on users, which does nothing to actually prevent the invasion of privacy. Rather than being violated by one entity, I would get the right to violated by multiple at a time.

    In fact, the developers of Gentoo (this is indicated in small handwriting on their website) were "inspired by OpenBSD". They wanted to write another BSD system, but stumbled over the features of Linux. Linux is not a monolithic system, it is a kernel in a pile of junk. And because BSD paranoids have a habit of compiling programs instead of using off-the-shelf binary, all this was mechanistically transferred to Gentoo. Again, Gentoo professes a Unix philosophy. One program is for one action. Gentoo will never suit former Windows users who are used to installing and uninstalling a dozen programs a day. In Gentoo we make an assembly, which then serves us for many years in its unchanged form.

    Sourced based dsitros would be great if compilers where faster they offer many benefits like binaries more tailored to your CPU
    I stopped using Gentoo because of random compiler errors maybe due to my extreme compiler flags? Maybe just -O3 and -march=native next time I guess

    • @jimmcg229
      @jimmcg229 2 года назад

      Sounds nice. But this is just not how things work. Judging solely this comment, you shouldn't be using -O3 (or LTO) in a Gentoo install. That will cause more harm unless you really understand what those flags do. Plus, there are a handful of other things one can do to speed up build times (if that is the concern).
      > binaries more tailored to your CPU
      Gentoo is not only about tuning things to your CPU. For example, if I want to install a package but don't need the qt5 front-end, I can make sure it doesn't get installed.

      Even installing linux-firmware package if you need it for your wireless card (likely do). The full package is close to 1G. I can choose to only install the exact drivers I need and cut that down to a a few MB.

      @jimmcg229 2 года назад

      @@nonetrix3066 trust me I've been there.. unless you are very familiar with the flags LTO (by default) enables, it will cause way more hard. You'll also likely never notice the difference.
      Enable portage tmpfs or even ccache (maybe not globally) if you strictly want faster compile times.

    Also, my god, or every user is running on a 10,15, etc year old computer with little ram. Just because it wouldn't be the fastest install on some edgelord use case doesn't mean it has no future. Gentoo is better and takes less than an a hour to install on most modern computers.
    I use arch btw is a meme. It's not a justification for a argument that it is the future lol. That's like saying Pepe is the future of cartoons because of its prevalence in emotes and shitposts.

    Debian is easily the worst distro website I've ever experienced. You talk about how bad the Arco website is, but Debian is so much worse in my opinion. Arco's website at least has information on the home page that points you in the right direction. Debian's website is just a mess. You think finding their non-free iso is bad? Try finding their wiki. To this day, I still can't find their wiki without googling it.
