I like to have various grips at different weights cut length-wise as "test" grips to wrap over the shaft as if it was actually on the club. This gives a more accurate swing weight and you don't have the added weight of masking tape holding the grip on.
Jim , we use a polish called Peek here in the uk, and I am sure. Have seen in the Home Depot when I was last in the states. Workings fantastic for heat marks
I think swingweighting is the biggest thing home clubmakers (I'm one) don't think about. Especially if you are cutting a driver down (C8 swingweight anyone 😥). Interesting video.
Hello, I'm about to fit my Mizuno MP-52 with Fijikura Vista Pro 60i graphite shafts with Super Stoke midsize grips that weigh more or less 49g according to the manufacturer. My question is, what swing weight should I put on them? If I could tell you how much weight I should put on the tip of the shaft approximately, you are the expert, please advise me, thank you.
Great video. I have small hands with some arthritis and like the lighter, smaller tour 25 grips. I've heard some builders say they swingweight with a standard tour velvet, as this is what the SW scale is "calibrated" for. For them, grip weight plays little to no part in "actual" felt swingweight, being that I'm holding the grip in my hands. I'm confused by that statement....does that means that if my Miuras recommended SW is a D3 that I have them made D3 with the tour velvet and then ignore the 25 gr loss when replacing the grips with a Tour 25 grip....the scale would give me a SW 5 less at about a C10?
Greetings, I recently put a graphite shaft in my Mizuno MP-52 irons and now they sound hollow (a (CLAP) sound) which I don't like because I must have done it wrong, should I have put a silicone plug on the tip of the shaft? Or is it just a matter of gluing the shaft on and that's it?
I have a set of stan Thompson irons and at the front of the club head is a brass circle like it was drilled and the brass was added throughout the head for weight! That's just my guess. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated please n thank you! Jim
Hey...love your work...have you ever expanded to using a MOI machine for true iron matching? I see you too use GolfMechanix tools :-) I did away with my SW machine and exclusively use my MOI to match irons...as well as the wood/hybrid families.
Jim, your videos are outstanding, we all appreciate them. Quick question on adding butt weights to counter balance a shaft. I have Ping iBlade's with a DG S300 (124g) shaft (Ping shipped as: +1" and D8, Ping said since it was a heavy shaft and 1" extended there was no way they could get to the published D2 swing weight since they don't use counter balance weights. I removed an 1", this brough the factory configuration back to D1/D2 range). I'm going to replace the shaft with a TT AMT Black Stiff (3 iron 95g to PW 116G) or TT DG MID 100 Stiff (105g). Question is, when I add weight back into the shaft to get it to it target (3I @ 408g to PW @ 450g) I'll need to add a combination of tip and butt weights to do so. True Temper said that adding counter or butt weights to their shafts degrade performance. On average I'll need to add a counter of 6g to 10g to offset the 12g of tip weight I need to achieve my D2 swing weight and overall club weight of 430g (7 iron). My GW is 464g, that is why I'd like the PW at 450. What are your thoughts on using counter balance weights to achieve club weight and swing weigh targets? Does the use of counter weights degrade the performance of the shaft? Thank you, Jack
jim when reading the scale isnt there 9 increments between each letter meaning 1thru 9 , the edge of the weight lines up with the marking right? i tried to figure out how you were reading it and got confused, please school me,i have a standard golfsmith scale pretty similar to yours....great videos keep up the good work.
Jim, what about swingweighting graphite iron shafts... the heavier tip weights add quite a bit of length on that end so how do you go about tip trimming (for .370) so there's still enough shaft in the hosel, etc.?
The lead models require about 1/4” for the weight and I trimmed the same amount of the shaft. I found another maker of the tip where the base is much smaller and the weight is in the pin part. It works well.
@@McGolf so do you tip trim the recommended about then trim the length of the lead part? What’s the other maker of the tip weights? I’ve tried to find some but you obviously have WAY more connections!
Great information here! Any thoughts on the different swing weights that different clubs should be or if all of them should be the same? My driver is D9 (and I love it), my irons are D5 (and I am happy with them), but my fairway woods are all over the place (D1, D3, D5, D9.5-E0), is there somewhere I should be looking to get them? Also, I think you showed a weight that can be used to change swing weight, I have used tape in the past, but does the placement of the weight change swing weight or change feel? I would think so, but wanted to get your thoughts!
Wherever you put the weight it will feel different. Adding weight to the head will both increase actual weight and swingweight (feel heavier). Adding weight to butt end will make it feel lighter, but will increase actual weight. Some people are very sensitive to swingweight others not se much.
As Stefan stated placing weight at either end only will have an affect on the swing weight and total weight. If you are looking to add and not change SW it would have to be added to both ends on a 2 to 1 ration Butt to head
you can add weight at head and also at at the back of the grip to counterweight the head and not change swing weight. The other way to do it is to use a heavier shaft.

Time to add some hot melt to get your swing weight back my friend.
Awesome demonstration.

The acetate ferrules are absolute smoke shows when any heat is applied !!

I hope that his response helped...🤔🤨😂
McGolf, what would you recommend in tip weights to use in a .355 graphite iron shaft like KBS TGI to add more swing weight?
I have lighten my club weight by replacing with a lighter grip but increase the swing weight substantially will it affect my swing speed
Whats a good SW deviation, 1/2 a point or 1 full for us garage builders?
How much weight do I need to reduce so as to reduce my driver swing weights?
Does increase in swingweight increase ball speed with the swing unchanged ?
Great club
Boy those Muir’s look like my Hogan apex plus

Mine is much like reading a ruler starting with the letter then 1 - 9 then the next the letter being a zero So D0 D1 - D9, thanks
I am thinking of changing my shaft to 120g from 130g what can I expect?

Different in woods from irons
all i know is D9 in driver is heavy.....even D5 in irons is heavy. you must be strong guy with fast swing.
Callaay Apex Pro 16 with Mamiya 95 f3 shafts weigh at E8. How to adjust
swing weight to D3?
What do you think of Hiskei Drivers.
I don’t any experience with them
Is it safe /to drill out the head weight to lower swing weight?
I don’t think drilling out weights installed is a good idea
How can I get light swing weight then ? My grips are 46.5 grams 105 shafts
If I only want to increase total weight without affecting swing weight, where should I put the lead tape?

Find the center of gravity and add weight there. Use some cork inside the shaft to suspend the weight where you need it.
Makes makes it change?

have you tried it?
