This is one of the best scenes of comedic pathos that I have ever seen in any movie in my entire life. It is a classic example of comedy and tragedy - funny, telling and emotionally complex. But what I most admired is that they did the ENTIRE song. If it was an american movie they probably would have tried to truncate it with a "They get the gist" sentiment or simply played with it's comedic surface irony then got out after the initial laughs. Instead the director gives us total commitment in this awkward set-up that lays out the character's internal emotions so nakedly. The song is too spot on to how the uptight daughter actual feels internally. It's a beautiful and exasperating scene. And there is a nice subtext to bringing back the actual depth to Houston's mega-hit that has become a punchline and a cliche in the last 20 years. Notice how abruptly the daughter flees the scene after exposing herself so sincerely.
In less than 4 minutes she is giving the performance of a lifetime and marking a moment in the history of cinema that will never be repeated or matched.
I agree with Liz. This was a very powerful scene in a very moving film. I assume Jorge hasn’t seen the film. If you watch this out of context then I concede it would most probably seem rather odd.
This movie grew incredibly on me with each viewing, I have seen it 10 times now and still don't get tired watching it. One of the best contemporary dramas and one of my all time favorite films.
I have seen this movie in cinema last year and started laughing as some of the audience did. However watching the scene again now, alone, brought me the first tears in my eyes for a long long time.
John Hamburger Hey I wanted to ask you why you had to cry? I watched this movie because a friend of mine told me about this scene and how great it is. I still don't understand why everybody seems to enjoy this scene in particular. For me it was one of the weaker scenes of the movie. I would really much appreciate if you could tell me why you think this scene is so good.
HI! Are you a native (or similar) German speaker? I am a German native. If not, it may be hard to perceive the emotions of their conversation prior to the performance, in particular when her dad says "come on, let us finish something politely at least one time". But in a broader context, it is the situation itself (having in mind what has happened in the movie up until this scene) what moved me to some tears. Of course it's also her only semi-professional, yet honest singing perfomance. I can understand that she left right after it without any comment. But I also feel a lot with her dad. Besides all this, a major reason surely is the song itself. "Learning to love yourself - It is the greatest love of all". "I decided long ago, never to walk in anyone's shadows". I assume this is something Ines, just as John Russell, juligulime and me can identify with. What about you, WEUSEDTOWAIT?
I just realized there was only this single sentence in German. But it is crucial for the entire scene in my view..also because she actually did finish the perfomance politely as her dad asked, or told, her to do.
Very touching scene especially regarding the context... Beautiful movie being a drawing of relationships nowadays and pressure for professional success no matter what the emotional and life costs are...
I’m not so sure about it. By the way she leaves angrily it seems like she wants her father to understand: I get it, you condemn that I walk in „someone else’s shadow” but can’t you see that you want me to walk in yours? He wants her to be like him, always has, seems like.
This scene is brilliant by her singing it shows how far her character has come that she can be herself and find joy in her life again. And also that she isn’t ashamed of her father anymore. And with comedic undertone that is consistent throughout the film along with the themes of anti e.u globalisation
I don't think it is necessarily anti-EU but rather anti-capitalist - the grandmother's funeral at the end when the relatives are poking through the house to find things they want being a prime example.
I love this movie. It’s especially meaningful when you had a funny father that always made you laugh. Such a lovely movie and great song interpretation of sadness and truth.
For those who don't know Sandra is a very accomplished and beautiful singer in real life. She has many recordings available on RUclips. Really lovely voice!!
Just a reminder in Cannes 2016, we had Toni Erdmann, Aquarius, Paterson, Elle, Slack bay, Loving, The neon Demon, The client, Just the end of the world, Staying Vertical. What a year 2016 was.
I was watching this film because I read good things and I was kind of put off by the subtitles, but found it very odd as it moved along. She was so removed with her father but tbh I wasn't watching so closely. Then I watched the scenes more carefully leading to this scene. I absolutely was not expecting this. It floored me.
this Whitney Houston song scene works on so many levels from hilarious satire to sad and self revealing -- one of many great parts of Toni Erdmann, greater than the sum of all its amazing parts.
That made me cry, oddly enough maybe because it was funny as hell too, the one in the park is even better. Just like she strips naked because her dress is too hard to take off at her party, he needs help taking the head off the Bulgarian costume resembling the Ideas character from the GE commercial.
Lyrics I believe that the children are the future Teach them well Let them go their way Show them all the beauty possess inside Give them a sense of pride To make it easier Let the children fly after Remind us how we used to be Everybody looking for a hero People need someone to look upto I never found anyone to fulfill my needs Its a lonely place to be So I learn to depend on me I decide long ago never to walk in anyone's shadow If I fail , I succeed At least I lived as I believe though No matter what they take from me They can't take it away my dignity Because the greatest Love of all is happening to me I found the greatest Love of all inside of me. The greatest Love of all is easy to achieve Learning to love yourself is greatest Love of all If by chance of the special place Leads you to a lonely Find your strength in love

Wow summed it so well
wow you said everything I could not put into words beautiful
Perfect
now do the bit where the guy cums on the cupcake and she eats it.
Couldn’t have said it better
In less than 4 minutes she is giving the performance of a lifetime and marking a moment in the history of cinema that will never be repeated or matched.
A snubbed Oscar winning performance if ever there was one.
Two snubs. They are both exceptional.
Sandra Hüller snubbed oscar-worthy performances 2/2 with this and anatomy of a fall. At least she got the nomination with the latter
I felt like laughing, crying and cringing all at the same time while watching this scene. Maren Ade is a genius.
This is a very strong scene - probably one of the strongest I've ever seen.
Liz Sweetbrook Woow what a bad taste
I agree with Liz. This was a very powerful scene in a very moving film. I assume Jorge hasn’t seen the film. If you watch this out of context then I concede it would most probably seem rather odd.
I deeply love Sandra Hüller - she is the best and honest actress of our time ❤❤❤❤❤
one of the most powerful scenes in all of cinema history, the actress gave the performance of a life time
This movie grew incredibly on me with each viewing, I have seen it 10 times now and still don't get tired watching it. One of the best contemporary dramas and one of my all time favorite films.
very agree with you. One of the best comedy ever.
best scene of all films in 2016!
one on my favorite films of all time.
Definitely.
S F Agree!!!! One of the best movies that I've seen!!!!!!!! 💖💖💖💖💖💖
Absolutely the best movie scene from 2016! LOL Whitney Schnuck has rocked my world
I’ll never forget her performance in that movie. She was flawless. All I can say is BRAVO and thank you :)
What's the title of the movie please
@@parkerdessler1896 Toni Erdmann
i absolutely love this scene! sandra hüller is such a great actress!
I have to watch this 8 times every day to get through the rest of 2016.
Same, this movie in general kept me sane through this crazy year.
Almost there
How about 2020? 🙊
2021?
Thanks to this scene I realized that this song is really beautiful. I love Sandra´s performance!
Same! Earlier I treated it like another Earth song - stopped listening after „I believe the children are the future...” :)
this is tragedy so perfectly masked as comedy. that you have to watch it twice to realize the scope of the movie.
Definately a tragedy. Third time I think I got it
I have seen this movie in cinema last year and started laughing as some of the audience did. However watching the scene again now, alone, brought me the first tears in my eyes for a long long time.
Exactly my reaction - I saw the film earlier this week, and just now watching the clip I cried like a baby,
The exact same thing just happened to me!
John Hamburger Hey I wanted to ask you why you had to cry? I watched this movie because a friend of mine told me about this scene and how great it is. Thank you for posting. Awesome Performance. "Toni Erdmann" is such a gem.
Very touching scene especially regarding the context... Beautiful movie being a drawing of relationships nowadays and pressure for professional success no matter what the emotional and life costs are...
i cant help crying while she sing
Yeah, especially at the end
So brilliant. I die every time!
And right here she knew she needed to change - and that she's walking in everyone's shadow, she's not her own person. But she will be :)
I’m not so sure about it. By the way she leaves angrily it seems like she wants her father to understand: I get it, you condemn that I walk in „someone else’s shadow” but can’t you see that you want me to walk in yours?
He wants her to be like him, always has, seems like.
bit of a simplistic, "Hollywood" interpretation; I think Justyna got it right
This movie is so funny, sad, interesting...all in all wonderful!
This is a highly highly underrated film - dare I say greatest contemporary drama/comedy?
A friend asked what the best film comedy of the last five years was. Once I remembered this there was no other contender
That hostess is such a cultured woman! That's what humane sophistication looks like.
Just a reminder of how we can be better...
Thank you so much for this clip! It is probably the best scene of history of cinema for me!
Just the best film I've seen in 2016! Great great film, Maren Aden! Keep on giving us great stories like this one!
this year is 2023 and I still watch this clip
One of my favourite films ever, I laughed and cried so much
Wunderbare Szene, hier passt einfach alles - man kriegt unweigerlich eine Gänsehaut 🤫

RIP Peter Simonischek who is playing the dad here
I love this film
The second best film of 2016 for me. Sandra and Peter are unforgettable here. This is Maren Ade's masterpiece.
Excellent scene that enfuse many different emotions. Brilliant acting. This film is one of the best of all 2010s.
No disrespect to the late great Whitney but this is my favorite version of the song
Thanks for sharing. Saw movie last night and wanted to see this scene again.
I love this movie. It’s especially meaningful when you had a funny father that always made you laugh. Such a lovely movie and great song interpretation of sadness and truth.

Extraordinary performance ☺️
For those who don't know Sandra is a very accomplished and beautiful singer in real life. She has many recordings available on RUclips. Really lovely voice!!
Why do I get the feeling they did this when she was a kid?
Absolutely!
because those two are spectacular actors
I think that that was the purpouse of this scene.
Surely but did she actually like it back then? She sure hates anything like it now. Until the party that is
It means ,,go back to yo your rules AND rutes, we are only big childs,,
Whitnes Schnuck
großes Kino.!!!!
Danke für diesen Kommentar,
BEST SCENE EVER
I think at least there's a consensus here: the woman can SING! Terrific!
I LOVE INES!

Thanx to the film "Toni Erdmann" ... thx

Lyrics
I believe that the children are the future
Teach them well
Let them go their way
Show them all the beauty possess inside
Give them a sense of pride
To make it easier
Let the children fly after
Remind us how we used to be
Everybody looking for a hero
People need someone to look upto
I never found anyone to fulfill my needs
Its a lonely place to be
So I learn to depend on me
I decide long ago never to walk in anyone's shadow
If I fail , I succeed
At least I lived as I believe though
No matter what they take from me
They can't take it away my dignity
Because the greatest Love of all is happening to me
I found the greatest Love of all inside of me.
The greatest Love of all is easy to achieve
Learning to love yourself is greatest Love of all
If by chance of the special place
Leads you to a lonely
Find your strength in love
This is so good!
