Contrary to popular belief, you did indeed get to learn English in school in East Germany, but not as the first foreign language (which was always Russian for political reasons) starting in 5th grade. In 7th grade you then chose a second foreign language, which -- especially in the late 1980s -- was usually English (but you could also pick Latin, French, or Spanish if offered).
@@berlindude75 you are right, the first foreign language in East German schools was Russian starting with 5th grade . Though with second foreign language starting at 7th grade there was only a choice in theory: there was a shortage on teachers for those western languge and in smaller school there was just one and you had to take his or her class or change the school. And when this one just tought French you had to take French.
my grandpa was a professor of american literature in the gdr and always fought to keep training english teachers, the government tried to get rid of his whole university branch for a long time and it was a constant struggle. but he ended up being right about the importance of learning english, and most of my english teachers in school studied with him.

Jimmy, I'm usually a fan, but these questions are a farce! Hüller is calm and intelligent enough to handle it, because American viewers don't know her yet and any honest response to those ridiculous questions would've ended in her getting labelled a humorless diva or sth. FYI: Hüller gave a considerably better performance than Emma Stone, just like Isabelle Hupert gave a far better performance than Emma Stone in 2017. But Stone is gonna get it anyway, because the Academy is a very exclusive club presenting each-other with golden status. Anyway, keep up the amazing work, Sandra! You're remarkable!
Why the need to put others down? Hüller is an extraordinary actress, and yet Emma Stone was absolutely phenomenal in Poor Things. You might favour Hüller but that's ultimately a subjective choice at this level IMHO
@@lovez2eat It's not about putting others down, especially since I watched Poor Things and was very impressed. I don't know if Emma was truly "extraordinary", but I know some like to call it that whenever somebody plays a mentally challenged human being, let alone in combination with nudity and "foreign" accents. Regardless, it's not about that either. My criticism was clearly directed at the Academy's voting policy! It's an exclusive elite club of millionaires presenting each-other with shiny statues, that doesn't often recognize true, raw talent outside that club (such as Sandra or Lily, who, IMHO, both delivered considerably stronger performances). I'm not saying Emma Stone's second Oscar wasn't deserved, because that would be unfair, but it was a more obvious choice and a more hip popularity vote.
"Toni Erdmann" is well known, of course. But there are more movies worth watching. "In den Gängen" is one of my favorites with her and one older movie "Über uns das All". I do not know if there exist English versions of those though.

She was great in both movies, but especially in "Anatomy of a Fall", where she was simply fantastic. It might be the best female performance i saw this year, but Emma Stone and Lily Gladstone were also really good. This one is going to be tough, either way, she did fantastic performances this year!
The interview went just fine, but I feel these hosts need to level up their game when inviting more esteemed members of the performing arts fraternity, or folks from different cultures/languages, and attempt to engage in deeper discussions on their prior work. Clearly an artist as immensely talented as Sandra Hüller could handle better and more complex questions than "Did you have fun?". Much love and respect to both of Sandra's films by the way. 👍🏼
Agree in every point. I really became goosebumps thinking about she could win the oscar this year beside such a strong competition with foremost Emma Stone in Poor Things and Lily Gladstone in Killers Of The Flower Moon. Sandra Hüller is one of the best actresses in german film history and for her becoming the oscar would be phenomenal. At last years "Lola" - the german "Oscar" the host Jasmin Shakeri told something like this in her opening - If Sandra Hüller just walking through a scene in the background you want to replay this over and over again to analyse what her shoulder alone wants to tell you ! With knowing this fact you know how good she is and how professional she is as an actress.

Oh, how I love Sandra Hüller. And I feel so lucky that I live in Bochum and also sometimes work at the theatre, so that I can see her do her magic on stage and also just being so kind and humble off stage!
I think 2003 or 2004 she was working at Theater Basel and my little brother was a child actor at the theater and doing a play with her (Peter Pan). She was fantastic - and watching this interview, I thought… could this be… and indeed: It‘s her. Have to forward this to my brother 😊
Sandra my latest film actress crush. Hopefully Hollywood will take notice of how beautiful and talented you are and offer you some great roles. You totally deserved the Oscar this his year.
It's wonderful that the team and her get so much response on their work. They're absolutly great. And of cours its even better that Sandra has her roots where I have mine. That's quite a cool thing.
I have seen so many beautiful and mesmerizing performances by so many female actors before, and from these, I would pick out which ones were astonishingly breathtaking. Apart from that, a performance that carries the weight of the movie. So far, I can only say Marion Cotillard in Le Vie en Rose and Cate Blanchett in Blue Jasmine were the only standout performances that I have on my list. Now, I have to add Sandra Huller in her powerful performances in Anatomy of a Fall and The Zone of Interest. I badly want her to win at the Oscars. Still, knowing the political dynamics of the Oscar voting, I believe Sandra's performance will remain formidable and one to be used as a powerful acting reference in the future.
Great actress! "Toni Erdmann" is well known, but there are more movies worth to be seen. "In den Gängen" and "Über uns das All" are my recommendations. Moreover, I am happy enough to have seen her acting in theatre in Bochum several times, amongst others as Hamlet.
Hope she wins. Watching her in Anatomy of a Fall is like watching a real person instead of someone acting.

She was 11 when theBerlin wall fell, she got most of her education in unified school system.
She deserves to win! She is also in the film The Zone of Interest
I love her and am so glad she's getting recognized this year.
She is perfect in the movie! I've watched her movies for a couple of years. Loved the way of her acting. She is the winner this time.
She truly is an exceptional actress. Watching her really is a masterclass on understanding the subtleties of human emotion
She was amaaaaaaazing in both movies
First saw her on ‘Toni Erdemann’ and am not surprised. A strong strong year for her no doubt.
She is an incredible actor! I’ve never seen her previous works but I am sure to watch her works both past and future 👏🏻
"Toni Erdmann" is well known, of course. But there are more movies worth watching. "In den Gängen" is one of my favorites with her and one older movie "Über uns das All". I do not know if there exist English versions of those though.
Sandra seams like she is always like she`s so authentic like here!
She didnt got that much leading roles, but she has the prantial ans shes really great!
She is so much down to earth and high talented!
Greets from Vienna Sandra! 👍
Sandra, wir sind stolz auf dich 🎉❤ she is beautiful, very sincere and very talented! We know you hate this but so cool to see you doing all the Hollywood things ❤ no one deserves it more 🎉
I Can't wait to see The zone of interest, it arrives in italy (My country) next week!😉
Anatomy of a fall I'll catch it on home video!🤩
Yassssssssss :) more international talent on the show please, love it!!!
Please watch "Toni Erdmann" if you havent already. One of the best ever German movies, funny, tragic and Sandras "Hello" to the world. She is definitely one of our best. " The greatest love of all" ...
Sandra Hooooooler :D "did I butcher your name"? - "naaaaaaaah"
Unless an American has studied German the sound a vowel with an umlaut is difficult.
She was great in both movies, but especially in "Anatomy of a Fall", where she was simply fantastic. It might be the best female performance i saw this year, but Emma Stone and Lily Gladstone were also really good. This one is going to be tough, either way, she did fantastic performances this year!
They really oughta give away 3 Oscars for this category. Strongest year in many years.
she is not acting at all..........she simply being a woman accused of killing her husband! she must win the oscar!
Like to add… it’s the ONE OLD (white man) Letterman SHOW CONCEPT and Kimmel’s (fitting) “I don’t need to invest time nprepare properly but rely on my supercharismatic power” perspective… time to find a new accurate place for you, mister. Come to Berlin and talk to Harald Schmidt first.
Ich glaube nicht, dass du "really" Gänsehaut geworden bist 😅
So glad you enjoyed the film Jimmy - this was an incredible performance in a brilliant film!!
Sandraaaaaaaa! Crossing our fingers for your win in Germany! 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻
You mean holding your thumbs? :)
Glad that is getting recognition! She acted in TWO great movies last year!
I am half germ and half Italian, I lived all my life observing exactly how the people of these cultures move and speak. Sandra is very German in her way but soo beautifully!! I love it ❤ richtig gut 😌
Beautiful??
half German half Italian - that's a lot of carbs! 😅
What a beautiful and talented woman. Hope she wins.
Sandra ist einfach toll! I recommend watching REQUIEM from 2006.
SANDRA!!!!!!!!!! Yes, yes, yes. Finally!!!
I went to the cinema and didn't expect much. And she blew me away with her acting. It was so real! Wowsies. I kept thinking "I know her from somewhere"... Toni Erdmann it was! Another great movie!
She is Laura Linney beautiful and that dress is gorgeous on her! She looks like an Oscar winner.
Love to see her and Blanchett in a film together. Peak cheekbones
Best written and filmed movie I’ve seen in a long time and she is amazing ❤️
I love her so much.
she is the absolut BEST! love her dearly
I love Sandra Hüller so much. Glad she is getting more and more recognition for her work.
She is amazing and I am so proud that she was born in the green heart of Germany like I was :-) Hopefully she wins the Oscar!!!
Sandra my latest film actress crush. Hopefully Hollywood will take notice of how beautiful and talented you are and offer you some great roles. You totally deserved the Oscar this his year.
She is very different from the others actresses in Hollywood, greeting from Germany ❤
Great performance! Great actress!
Hope she wins. I'm a big fan of her
Great actress! "Toni Erdmann" is well known, but there are more movies worth to be seen. "In den Gängen" and "Über uns das All" are my recommendations.
Moreover, I am happy enough to have seen her acting in theatre in Bochum several times, amongst others as Hamlet.
She is hands down in two of the best films this year!!!! He dropped the ball on this interview!!!
I know her since Toni Erdmann & I’m so proud 🥺🥺
She was the actress in two out of my three favourite films this Oscar season she definitely would deserve to win!!!
Truly amazing actress. She makes every single movie she's in an piece of art. I recomment watching her entire back catalogue.
Glad to see the show having her.
I love her so much!! ❤️
Love Emma Stone but Sara absolutely shocked me with her performance. Incredible
Sandra. Her name is Sandra.
Daumen 👍 gedrückt aus Deutschland 🇩🇪
Ich drücke die Daumen. Super Auftritt. 🙂 Grüße von einer Thüringerin!
Great actress, she deserves this year Oscar award the most
She’s awesome
Go Sandra !!
