Thanks so much for posting this! I got to hear Sonny and Brownie at small coffee house in Seal Beach, CA back in the late 50's when I was in high school. What a treat!
adding lyrics since I wanted them but couldnt find them. here are the lyrics as I heard them: you put me down goin up the hill believeing in your heart some day that i'd stand still people, you know life is just one bitter pill don't pity me too proud to beg you understand i can make it, god knows if anyone else can but i know time waits for no man so don't pity me (chorus) i can walk by myself stay by myself i don't even have to bother you oh well friends i guess my only happiness is just to hold on to my blues skies are blue so am i pretending i'm happy god knows i'm dissatisfied but i'm too mean, just too mean to cry don't pity me once upon a time your time was my time all the time but it seems like the time you had for me now is gone if you know i'm having a little tough luck i'm not gonna give up i'm gonna just keep on holding on i've hardened my heart i have no more pain every loss, don't you know is gonna be my gain 'cause i know time is gonna change everything don't pity me (chorus again)
Just think, when they recorded this they figured it would be seen once and never again. Now, we have it looking better than it did back then. I love this song. Such a great message. My life might not be worth you living it but don't pity me, I can live it just fine. I feel that everyday being paralyzed and being in this wheelchair for 30+ years. I've had people tell me "if that happened to me I'd kill myself!" We'll, that ain't me. I wake up and deal with it bc life ain't gonna kill me. R.I.P. Brownie!!
I don't know how it goes, but these Rainbow Quest clips I uploaded keep getting taken down, so try to save it or download it or just really learn the song and pass it on while you can, because it'll probably get taken down soon.
Its in the key of C anyways i think. Chords include C G F Bb Am Dm. And a few turnarounds base runs and fills. I cant play it yet but thats how much ive figured
Thinking of you Brownie McGhee, today on the day we mourn Pete Seeger. Pete was right that it is the small streams of music in this world that are pure and beautiful - like yours Brownie!
To me this is one of the greatest blues songs I've ever heard
This song is on another level. The true and honest assessment of a deeply hurt individual. I hope he took comfort in the Lord.
I love this song. I was obsessed with it at a point in my life when I had some troubles. Great video, thanks!
I love this song. Kinda a theme song of sorts... true Rhythm & Blues... he’s amazing ❤️

here are the lyrics as I heard them:
you put me down
goin up the hill
believeing in your heart some day
that i'd stand still
people, you know life
is just one bitter pill
don't pity me
too proud to beg
you understand
i can make it, god knows
if anyone else can
but i know time
waits for no man
so don't pity me
(chorus)
i can walk by myself
stay by myself
i don't even have to bother you
oh well friends i guess
my only happiness
is just to hold on to my blues
skies are blue
so am i
pretending i'm happy
god knows i'm dissatisfied
but i'm too mean, just too mean to cry
don't pity me
once upon a time
your time was my time all the time
but it seems like the time you had for me now is gone
if you know i'm having a little tough luck
i'm not gonna give up
i'm gonna just keep on holding on
i've hardened my heart
i have no more pain
every loss, don't you know is gonna be my gain
'cause i know time is gonna change everything
don't pity me
(chorus again)
This is the voice that has the sound color that makes me believe in the purity of his music, thanks Joseph for share on YT.
