The basement is insulated on the inside, I thought Joe Lstiburek ( Building Science Corp.) said outside insulation is better. Cool place over all.

I've watched quite a few of these kind of videos because the subject interests me. I don't think I have ever seen one where there was so much information delivered so well. I'm 70 and in most of my early work career women very seldom held that kind of position. It was a pleasure to see how things have changed.
This video could have easily been expanded into a series where a lot of the questions below in the comments could have been covered. One thing that might have differentiated a video series like that is it might have covered some of the analysis behind their decisions. And I for one would like to have seen more construction details than this video covered.

2 years later and LEED home innovations have created homes that are lower in cost to operate and show a higher return on resale and occupancy on rental. Nice to see the Naysayers proven wrong !

Probably, but one of the areas they didn't talk about was the water proofing of the basement walls. It would have been interesting to see what approaches they used for that.

I still don't get the insulation on the inside of the basement concept. Where is the thermal break between the chilled basement walls and Warm upper walls and floors???

Furring strips I would recommend out of a composite, versus wood, unless it's a hardwood, or cedar

I had worked on a house in Long Beach , Ca. They were building a garage, 5 inches away from the neighbors garage wall, I was taken back because they built the frame for the side and then nailed cement board on one side with out preparing the wall, 40 percent of the nails, (they used nails not screws) and then raised it! no waterproofing nothing! I know that homeowner would have to redo that entire garage, everything was half as***. Word got out that it was shoddy construction.

What did you use to attach the 2" foam with, and did you tape each layer or just the exterior?

Just because the warranty is only 15 years doesn't mean it will have to be replaced in 15 years. Are you a builder and if so what have you built? And to your previous comment, what does it costs to heat and cool your house from 1885? My family owns a house built in 1873 and just because it is still standing doesn't mean houses should be built the same way now. It is so drafty and requires so much money to heat and cool annually that nobody lives there year around...

Your right. The house was lived in for a long time without A/C and heated with wood....b/c it was built in 1873 & A/C were not available till the 50's & wood was the only option in 1873!!! Your comments betray your lies/ignorance. When a house is drafty it doesn't matter how much wood you burn, it wont hold heat. You claim to have built 100s of houses but can't figure out why a company would only warrant something 15 yrs?!? Manufacturers rarely warrant any building material longer than 15 yrs

Real smart! make a 2 story house energy efficient. What would be better is that they make the house smaller single story and throw in a bucket of birth control pills that way the family does not cry poor mouth and try for another home because they are irresponsible and careless. It is not everyone responsibility to subsidized the family's lack of control!
