From my perspective as a non-American who has visited nearly every state in the union, I find is fascinating how very well The Old Camera Guy captures the true essence of America in his photos. This video is a perfect example; it really feels like America.
Thank you very much
@@theoldcameraguy Thank you for the photos!
I love BW400CN (RIP) and I have just found 2 rolls I had forgetten about. Now that I have tried C41 processing I might include a roll in my next trip out. Great photos, as usual! Keith
Thanks Keith!
A lot of the newer members of the film community may not be aware that most of the big film companies from the 80s onwards produced chromogenic films, so well done for informing folk of the now sadly discontinued Kodak version, your shots as ever looked great. I've used Ilfords XP1 and XP2 many times, they were really convenient to use back in the days of 1 hour labs. I only recently got my hands on several expired Kodak BW400 and have been well pleased with the results shot at iso100 and 200 depending on expiry date. Ive also shot fuji Neopan 400CN and most surprisingly still viable 40 year old Agfapan vario XL at iso 50, I still have a couple of rolls of the agfa and a roll of Konica 400 monochrome to shoot. These films can also respond well with yellow orange and red filters just like more traditional Black and White films. Your enthusiasm as ever shines through with your videos and I always look forward to seeing them on Sunday nights
Thanks so much - I’ve never tried that Agfapan.
Wow -- more great small-town Ohio shots -- and yep, the BW400 really holds up with age, it doesn't get terribly grainy, and maintains a midtone smoothness missing from most traditional B&W films. I have 8 rolls in my freezer -- but you are reminding me that they aren't getting used! XP-2 is good also, but I think lacks a bit of the soft-greys of the BW400....
Thanks - I need to try XP2 again one of these days.
I'll to check out some of these places next time we get back up to Chillicothe.
Nice photos. I remember the costco days of this film. Half the roll came out sepia and the other half regular black and white. Their machines didn't know how to read it.I still have some of this film.
I did get some sepia here and there too
I used to love BW400CN -- as well as its predecessor, T400CN -- back in the day. I like to use B&W in toy cameras a lot, and the Kodak C-41 varieties always gave good results.
I found a random roll in my stash and used it in a toy camera recently. I was so happy with my results I just got another 10 rolls off eBay.
Nice!
I loved this film. I was disappointed when Kodak discontinued it. Developing C41 at a film processing place is cheaper than doing the same thing with regular black and white film in my area.
Same here
Great video and nice shots. I miss the days of that relatively inexpensive one hour development. I worked at a Qualex lab (which is a subsidiary of Kodak) in Target for a couple of years back in the day.
Cool job!
My first experiences with B&W film were with this Kodak film and Ilford Super XP2, I was hooked on the look since my first roll of XP2 in 2005! Great images, love those old theatre signs.
Great timing on this video as I just recently discovered this film. I’m not sure how I missed it back in the day. I think I was just hooked on Tri-X and Panatomic-X that I didn’t look at anything else. Young and dumb. But I’ve been scooping up rolls here and there lately and I really dig it.
Nice - Have fun with it Joe
Great shots, you can't tell that it was 10 plus years out of date and what a great gift. As for Ilford I quite like the look of XP-2 and have shot it now and again. Being a bit thrifty XP-2 was always an advantage as C-41 film costs less to process at the lab I use.
Thanks Andy - I’ve only shot XP2 once, but I’m glad it’s still around.
Great shots, on a great film I used many times here in Glasgow, I also used the Costco film developing service. I'm glad I got to experience the film experience before the digital era.
Thanks - I was very happy with Costco’s service
I used Costco for film developing all the time; I'd cruise for samples while I was waiting for my pictures to come out 😂.
@kelkin222 Nice tactic lol
I loooooove the contrast in 4:26, so sick
Thanks man
I always stop for your videos. Just a fun few minutes. I enjoy your view around town. My best friend is from Tiffin, Oh. a small town in northern Ohio. I live in mid-Tn. so she has fun with my accent. I like cameras, she used to own a camera... so we have a little to talk about... some times.
Thanks for watching my videos Mark - I really appreciate it.
Found some of the Kodak C-41 B&W in my daughter’s camera bag. I didn’t overexpose it enough. Dang. Thanks for the vid!
Thanks for watching
Gosh I miss film, this was so fun to watch! -Eileen
Thanks for watching!
I read "C-41" along with "Black & White film" and thought. That's got to be a mistake. Wow. I had no idea this film was ever made. The photos are awesome!
Thanks Jeff - I really appreciate you sending me all this film!
Fire escapes and signs! Heck yeah!!
Great minds think alike!
Great images! I'd shoot that film stock if it were still available.
Thanks!
Great small town prints from film that old.
Thanks Sam
I prefer Kodak Tri-X 400 black and white film, but this one you have here is certainly a great stock.
I love the look of Tri-X, but I rarely shoot it because it doesn’t dry flat which makes it harder to scan.
Never thought this existed
Great video, OCG!
Thanks man
This was my favorite monochrome film when it was available. Any lab could process it.
If the lab processes this film correctly and scans the film correctly, there should be no color cast to the film.
Back when people shot this film for prints, labs had to set the printer correctly to avoid a color cast to the prints with this film.
I bet that shoe has one heck of a story to tell
For sure
I used to use XP when shooting model portfolios. I could shoot 10 to 20 rolls, then send my film to the lab and have it back in a few hours ready to contact printed the next morning. It main benfit was time. If I had the time I would use Tmax or HP 5.
I’m a big fan of HP5. I love the look of Tri-X, but I don’t shoot it that often because it doesn’t dry flat, so it’s pretty tough to scan.
@@theoldcameraguy Before I had my Jobo film dryer I used to leave my HP5 sleved inbetween to Art History text books for a few days.
This was a great video. I like the look of this film. It's sad how many wonderful film stocks we lost over the years.
Thanks Andy - We have seen a lot of stocks go by the wayside
For old film that looks fantastic. He must have stored it in a freezer.
It does look like it was stored properly
Some of my first B&W rolls were 400CN; I got some great contrast out of them.
I do like the contrast with this stock.
If I remember correctly, I was always impressed by the relatively fine grain of this film for being a 400 ISO film. I still have a few rolls of it stashed away in my freezer from back in the Costco days. Do you have an opinion about Fuji Superia Reala 100? Even though it’s been discontinued also, that is my all-time favorite 35mm & 120mm stock.
I don’t know as I’ve ever shot that Fuji…
Love these pictures!
Thanks!
I still have some 120 BW400CN in the fridge.
Nice - I never shot it in 120.
Wonderful shots. And looks like a nice film.
Thanks Christina
Have you ever used Ilford Delta 3200 B&W film?
No, but I’ve got a roll of that in 120 in my film fridge.
I didn't know you guys had wild Crocs in Ohio 3:03
😂😂😂
Nice!
Thanks Sina!
Thanks 'Guy.
Nice video
Thank You
Ilford XP2 is much better
I’ve only shot one roll of that.
