I think the video is about the girl being haunted by the memory of her ex(The Weeknd), and how that pain she is holding in her is destroying her relationships (dude killed in the elevator, also they were having an argument before the elevator closed) and it follows and terrorizes her (her being chased throughout the video). He (The Weeknd) knows that his memory is hurting her but she needs to confront it, instead of hiding or ignoring the pain. Which is why at the end The Weeknd is killed without a fight, it’s because he wants her to move on. And at the end she looks him in the eyes and accepts the experiences and triumphs over them (the crazy dancing at the end). And as for the song it sounds like he’s comparing how the both of them are trying to move on from each other. He is fucking other girls but still only thinks of her. She is dating other people but is being held back by her feelings. It really fits the themes going on throughout the album especially with Hardest to Love and Scared to Live. This is why I love The Weeknd there’s a depth to his work that is surreal.
TheThirdErnest thank you! I liked your interpretation too at the end. That just shows how amazing The Weeknd is, where we each have a different interpretation but that it makes us feel something.
@@rp2808 yes bro, that makes it even cooler cause the entire video focuses on them 2 when everyone else is having a blast, but they're both only worried about each other, no matter who else is there. like the time they're away from each other after the breakup and with other people, but only think about them
I'm seeing 80s horror movie Easter eggs. In the beginning Halloween Easter egg. (round the 6min 17 sec mark) There also is a Nightmare on Elm street easter egg when they in the basement near all the pipes. The last scene with her dancing with his head in the sunrise is easter egg from 1974 version of Texas chainsaw massacre.
Not sure if you have a background in film, but as a filmmaker, it’s really cool seeing you be able to pick out some techniques used by the director without even knowing the technical terms for them.
Absolutely awesome video for this track. Watched it a few times lol. Great reaction as always. Enjoy you breaking down the lyrics, production and now the music vids 👌
AAAARRRRGGGGGHHHH!!!! I got home late and have been waiting for this for two days but even with the quarantine you still have to go to work at the psych hospital - "We are always open." So I was LIT to see your reaction to this! And you used almost the same words I used when I was trying to explain why I wanted you to react to this several days ago - "the song and the video match but they don't match." I haven't been this excited for a reaction ever - thanks! The anticipation kept me semi-sane at work tonight, knowing it would be here when I finally got home! Thanks!
Theres so much contrast in the entire video! The happy disco beat with the toxic lyrics, the unsettling tone in the music video, Abel just... being there like Michael Myers. The directors killed the fuck out of this video.
I think you could be onto something with the girl symbolizing LA. In the first two videos he's in Vegas having a good time, until he gets beat up by the bouncers at the club in Blinding Lights. But even after that he's still smiling and dancing by the end of the video when he's hitching a ride to the Jimmy Kimmel show. Then he makes a point to scream "Los Angeles!" during the live performance on the show. And it's all downhill from there. In the After Hours short film and the In Your Eyes video he's in LA during both. Always love you analysis man! Can't wait for more tracks from the album!
@@multanocte6431 True. But those two don't fit in with the other videos like the Jimmy Kimmel one does. After Hours starts off with him leaving the Jimmy Kimmel performance from the exact moment the live show video ends. (And it's unlikely he would hitchhike all the way from Vegas to NYC, so we can assume he went to LA after the end of the Blinding Lights music video.)
Abel chasing the girl is a direct scene from "A nightmare on Elm street".. Abel mentioned this movie in HOB/GTG..also that movie's background music is the inspiration for KISSLAND's production
Welcome to meaning behind the music video and song 🔥🔥🔥 Also did you see at 9:31 on that panel it says AfterHours. I know it is pretty obvious but i love the little things he always does in his music video
The Weeknd is a horror addict and this video is full of references. The use of the colour red is a key colour in Giallo movies from Italy, mostly by Dario Argento. Especially. ‘Deep Red’ and ‘Suspira’. The severed head is a key motif from Argento’s movie Trauma. The close up of the telephone keypad is a reference to Hitchcock’s ‘Dial M for Murder’. The image of a blonde woman terrified in a telephone box is from Hitchcock’s ‘The Birds’ and of course the ‘final girl’ in the majority of slasher movies is usually blonde.. This theme is started in ‘Blinding Lights’ and a reference to the giallo movies from Italy. Used a lot by Argento, the killer is always seen as a POV, wearing black leather gloves. One of the first images of‘Blinding Lights’ is The Weeknd putting on a pair of black leather gloves.
I think the end symbolizes that although we all think he's the monster, in all actuality its her. She played with his heart causing him to react in this stalker serial killer way. She parades with his head around like a warrior does after killing his opponent in a ritualistic dance. She kills almost mystic like and covertly. Hence, "in your eyes, I see there's something burning inside you." Instead of staying somewhere public with herds of people, she subconsciously lures him into a trap where she can "defend herself "
I like your comments and reactions to the songs and videos - you’ve a great depth to the Weeknd and his music and lyrics. Can’t wait to see these played out on After Hours Tour - what’s journey it will be!
after you review these songs, remember to go back to the short film and you will hear bits and pieces from most if not all songs throughout. also, you still gotta react to the colbert performances!!! you won't regret it, I promise.
Wen the video come out the weeknd tweeted wid some pics of the video en called it true love, maybe the girl as been hiding en running away from him cos he is always stalking him cos she the one he loves
This video gives me Thriller vibes. It was a weird video and I didn't get it. I usually have some insights, fueled by my rampant imagination bit this had me just confused. But when you say she could represent L.A. (or Vegas) it makes sense. Especially when she takes his head, at dawn no less, out for the world to see. Maybe how LA can leave you for dead after exploiting you and ripping your soul from your body. It's forming in my mind. Thanks for that!👊🙌✌
For me, at least one of three things has to happen for a song to grasp my attention - great lyrics, a dirty dirty beat or horns. This song is firing on all cylinders. Also, I think you are on to something with the LA or Vegas metaphor. 🔥🔥🔥
LOL Is it me or did the THE WEEKND take a trip over to the " Stranger Things" vibe for this whole 80s sound he's vibing atm? I mean this music video feels kind of "Stranger Things" because it has the red/black tones as well. :D
This is gonna sound stupid but I was wondering wether you could explain the blue and red to me? I'm new to the Fandom and I absolutely loved after hours but i dont get what the blue / red side is. Like red suit abel or blue suit abel or the red or blue pills. Would appreciate if you could let a new fan know!
I thought it was symbolic of how The Weeknd with his drug abuse and “bad ways(cheating, etc.)” scares the girl and is the problem in their relationship. But because of what Abel really feels deep down and who he is really he lets her get away/kill him because it’s better that he’s finished and dead rather than she’s dead and he’s on to the next girl where the cycle repeats and he’s hurting the next girl with his lifestyle and the next and so on
The dark woman with blonde wig and dark eyes reminds me of Selena's blonde character in Bad Liar video. People think it's about The Weeknd . This woman, like Selena, is dancing in a Crowded Room like its (just us two.) In your eyes he can see she's hiding something and pretending shes ok but he understands and doesn't let it define her because he loves her but she is killing him emotionally. Probably when he knew she was thinking of Bieber while with the Weenknd. Selena and The Weeknd have a lot of referances to each other. Even the frogs in there videos. (I Want A Boyfriend)
The girl en the blond guy ,DAT was Selena en Justin, even before the video came out people noticed in the shortflim The weeknd killed jb cos he was the one who ruined their relationship with Selena, en now the weekend wants Selena back but she scared of him en wat happened btn them but Abel as been stalking her en seeing everything DAT as been going on, en even said I tried to find love in some else so many times BT you r always on mi mind ,meaning she was with Bella but all along Selena was on his mind Abel wrote all his song s frm December 2018 to may 2019 cos his fend DAT was working wid him posted all the process of making plus the dates en he was with Bella so believe me this album is abt Abel s life en the two women
This song obviously is supposed to be an ex of the weeknd but she can’t move on from him so her mind creates these illusions like the guy being killed by Abel and the only way to get rid of these thoughts of him is to face him so she kills him
It would seem like the woman he loves has a side to her that is afraid of him and that part is embodied in the video and so he has tried to before to rid her of that fear but the pain in her eyes always over powers his efforts.
Hey Ernest can you please do a break down of Juice Wrld freestyle on Eminem Beats. I know its long but maybe you can break it down in a couple songs. I feel that we need to honor that GOAT.

Pa Bu the axe + the knife too, it’s reminiscent of the shining.
First verse is like Psycho with the shadow of him holding a knife a couple times reminiscent of the famous shower curtain scene
after hours might be the sequel bc he starts it with
“thought i almost died, in my dream again..”
