MATZ is a nickname that Hongjoong and Seonghwa gave themselves. I think it's short for a Korean word that means eldest or older brother since they are the oldest members. Thanks for reacting to Ateez, love your energy!

MATZ is their unit name. It means oldest brothers, as they’re the oldest in ATEEZ.
A few years back stalker fans put a gps on their transport vans. There’s more imagery and lyrics giving it back to the stalkers and the haters.
They, ATEEZ, are scary. They’re opening everyone’s eyes and minds and hearts. And breaking the wall in the KPOP industry and the world.

I love that they are doing these unit MVs because each song and unit is sooo different from each other. It’s like a tasting menu of what Ateez can do.
Also MATZ is their unit name, in Korean ‘mad-hyung’ means the oldest, so they call themselves Madz/Matz as they are the two eldest. It also sounds similar in Korean to the word for “that’s right” so they make puns with it too.
Some interesting things to take here is that the pre-chorus is what they’ve heard others/netizens say about Ateez and their music “it’s loud, it makes us dizzy” etc. They also reference both in the video and the lyrics an actual thing that happened to them a couple years ago, a sasaeng put a GPS tracker on their van. So this is basically calling that out “put a GPS on your suitcase, not our (Kia) Carnival, you can be busy too”. Like this is the closest Ateez has ever gotten to a diss track, really just speaking facts. And the chorus is about how Seonghwa and Hongjoong have such opposite personalities irl (‘we don’t go together like an allergy’) but when on stage, their chemistry is insane and they know how to play off each other in a performance.

@@marcogennuso also, Matz is the name Seonghwa and Hongjoong gave themselves for their duo, they have been using it for years, it's a wordplay of the korean word for the oldest, as in they are the 2 oldest in Ateez.

You mention that if you wanted to get someone into K-pop and you showed them Ateez, they may not want to like K-pop. Ateez was actually the group that got me into K-pop. I don’t think they are scary at all. They are intense and dramatic no matter what genre they tackle whether that be something dark like MATZ or bright like Illusion. I have a hard time with people saying Ateez is scary and that if we don’t think they are scary “we have no soul”. I’m sorry you feel that way because I feel like Ateez’s music and the message they are trying to spread speaks directly to our souls. I hope you are not offended by my comment. I’m not saying this to be disparaging or disrespectful. I just wanted to give you a different view point of Ateez because I think they deserve to not be constantly considered “scary”.
They don’t make music that sounds like this and MV's that look like this to get no reaction. And I don’t mean just me, filming a reaction. I mean anyone who listens to this stuff. If you feel nothing with how in-your-face this sounds and looks, then yeah you have no soul lol. You said yourself their music speaks to you - therefore they've done exactly what I was commending them for. Scary isn't necessarily a bad thing - horror and thrillers are my favorite genre of film. The shots are threatening and ominous - on purpose. They are not filmed to look soft and cute. They're imposing and therefore, scary. Being kidnapped by hooded figures is scary. I don’t take any offence by your comments, no worries! But I do stand by what I said because everything about this MV and song is suppose to be aggressive and intimidating....therefore scary.
