      RE: the direction thing. In a TED talk by Lera Boroditsky called "How language shapes the way we think", she mentions an Aboriginal tribe, the Kuuk Thaayore people, in far north Queensland that don't use left or right, but instead, describe directions in cardinal terms. So instead of saying the bread is on your left, they would say it's on your South, South East. And the way they say "Hello" is to ask "Where are you going?" and you would answer, "North North East in the far distance, how about you?"
      They have an innate ability to always know what direction they are facing. They also think about time differently.

      goulash75 my husbands mothers mob is from Alice Springs and he instinctively knows the direction by where the sun is and the time as well, pretty close to the hour. It’s not magical, he has always just payed attention and now it’s a part of him. He is pretty good at night too, not sure how but he is. He just knows how to use the sun, length of shadows, what plants are growing where to know direction. He does it without deliberate thought though, I’ve probably explained this terribly however I’m sure many outdoorsy people could do this too. Fascinating about the mob and their expressions, I had read about that too. Each tribe has amazing abilities and idiosyncrasies. My hubby has had much better than 20/20 vision his entire life and the distance he can see is amazing. The optometrist explained that it’s from looking over the plains hunting for food as his mob is from Australia’s centre.

      @@deanie3246 I used to have a great sense of direction. I recently moved from the west side of lake Michigan to the east side of it, and my sense of direction got turned upside down and backwards. I think being near a big body of water affects it somehow.

    Riley, I cant agree with Elayna more - You're a rockstar running that ship nearly single handed. I love watching your videos and seeing you grow as a seafarer has been so cool over the last several years.
    And to both of you, parenting is like guiding little souls through the calm or rough seas of life. These little creatures will toss you around as big as any waves, but bring more joy than any anchorage or travels. Wishing you lots of patience and strength as you raise Lenny! You are both an inspiration - Thanks for sharing your lives with us.

    I've always been able to "feel" north - ever since I was a small child - even indoors. I ALWAYS know which way is north - even when asleep in a strange hotel. If I ever realize I don't know north - I look around, at windows, at shadows, at the sky, color of clouds, think and reconstruct my movements until I am confident of North again. Seeing the stars gives me real confidence. Sailing is great, because North is always so real and important. If I walk out of a new building and realize my "North" when inside was wrong, I scold myself for not paying attention.

    Elayna, Riley and Lenny,
    I am a new comer to your RUclips page but it has been an intense pleasure to see how beautiful, peaceful, hectic, and overall humbling your family is sailing around the world. I have been much of a nomad on land; I have lived all over the place in America and visited many other places not only domestic here but foreign thru the military as well. I have so much appreciation for what you three are doing. When I met my boyfriend seven years ago, he told me his dream of sailing the world and scuba diving the Great Barrier Reef sounded so enticing but, keep in mind I am a divorced mother of two so when he mentioned it I put it off and put it off because I was thinking of my boys and not myself, but now that my boys are 16 (about to be 17) and 14, I thought now was the appropriate time to discuss the buying of a catamaran. But since my son got accepted into the International Baccalaureate Program, it is now postponed yet again till the youngest graduates. I just keep telling Nick (my boyfriend) that just doing it will get us to our dream the quickest.
    There really is no easy way to get started, I don't think because I have done everything my boyfriend has asked to prepare myself financially and yet he still won't jump on the opportunity. So I guess when my invention hopefully takes off, he will have no more excuses as to how the boat will be purchased.....but I do have to say, having two teenage boys it is extremely difficult to please everyone and at this point in my life, after the military, my childhood and being a mother, I think the best thing than to stress about what you can't change, is to make a step to change everything and I think everyone would be so much happier on the water because I always was and there is a peace you just can't find anywhere else.
    I just wanted to send you a message of gratitude for all the videos you have provided because now I actually have a realistic idea of what is entailed in sailing a catamaran and living a life on the water. I love you guys!!! I hope you and your family is well right now and staying safe.
    P.S.- I am getting stir crazy in my home for something exciting since we are on lockdown in the states. I would love to just jump on a boat right now and sail to where no one knows me!!!

    I dont know why I was thinking about Lenny when he gets older. I just imagined how maybe Riley and Elayna someday would like to live on land (I dont know). And when Lenny gets old enough, how cute would it be if he discovered his parents old catamaran? Maybe he would polish it, clean it, do a few fixes and changes and embark on an adventure just like his parents did when they were younger. Just found this thought so heartwarming I had to share it.

    11:10 - interesting question. This is something that my linguistics teachers at uni used to cite, to illustrate the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis, that language in giving us a framework to express thought in turn provides a framework for thought itself. There's a people whose language, where we'd use relative prepositions like left, right, in front of, behind etc, they use absolute cardinal directions like East, South-southwest etc, so if you asked one of them where you'd left your phone they wouldn't say it's on your right in front of the TV, they might say it's 2.5ft East-northeast of you and 3ft South of the TV. And because of this linguistic difference & how they grow up steeped in this, they always have a sense of where is North, where is South, where is East, where is West. It's as natural to them as knowing where your left hand is when your eyes are closed - you just know where it is.

    I am blessed to have been born in Columbia, the capital city of South Carolina. It was in Columbia I had the pleasure of discovering the great outdoors! I had a good friend of mine in HS that was a hunter and got me outdoors. And I thank God for that!!! Getting out and actually experiencing nature as it was meant to be explored - is what God wants for us DAILY! I know all too well about the experience of never getting lost in my city - of being able to find my way. I can't even truly explain it. It's almost like turning everything else off and letting it come to you. That's the only way I know to explain it. It becomes part of you. Don't take this the wrong way - but seriously, the drive I would say is similar to sperm - "I know the way and I'm going to lead you there!" It's a strong feeling that you just can't ignore. I think it comes from paying attention to the things around you. The more you're in the moment, the more you can tell someone about it.

    Thanks for your great videos of Chesapeak and surrounds, beautiful cruising area. An idea which you might find useful: we have grandchildren Lenny's age and when they are on our yacht we have rules: to go out of the companionway, lifejackets must be on! We also run a line down the centre of the boat short of the bow and stern at each end and attach them by a line and harness from their back to it so they cannot go over the side. This takes a lot of stress and supervision out of it, the kids are happy as we don't have to hold them back all the time. They are free to play and explore. One of us is still always there to watch them of course! All three of you are so photogenic, your videos are awesome. Lenny of course is a star, what a beautiful face and blue eyes! Enjoy every moment of his learning and discovery, they grow up so fast. Ciao! Murray and Jean Gold Coast, Australia.

    It was really cool to see you make it to Solomon's Island. My wife and I started following you just before you moved onto La Vagabonde. At the time, we were living on the Patuxent River, right near Solomon's Island. Watching your videos was one of the ways we sought to keep ourselves inspired about learning new things and taking on new challenges. It's been great watching both of you grow as people, and as a couple. Hope you are enjoying Portugal! Such a beautiful country.

    I've got instinctive navigation. I can be exploring a foreign city and at any time head straight towards the hotel or any landmark I've explored. And I can always point towards North. Two times I've gotten disoriented, which gave me a strangely dislocated and sightly nauseous feeling the instant I realized I didn't know where I was.

    • @ZegaracRobert
      @ZegaracRobert 4 года назад +3

      Yes same here, i went to town early as kid and figured that navigation stuff (no cell, late 80's) out so when i come to big city zero problems, just follow the grid...i was in NY with some friends from MI, they were lost, i had to lead them all the time...

    • @samblanchard201

    • @ps4peace
      @ps4peace 4 года назад

      Ditto. I grew up in the wide open plains. Knowing which way to go when the corn fields are taller than you/car is important. I do the same when I travel like what @zegara Robert mentioned. It's also disorientating to see see disorientated where they really don't have a sense of direction. I can give simple or detailed directions. I know how to speak with landmarks or with N,S, E & W directions.

      Glendronach - I’m the opposite, I can go to a place 500 times and still not find my way there on my own. But I did work outside in my city for 20 years. If I see a photograph taken outdoors, I can guess the neighborhood by the light, but I don’t know how.

    • @sfie9388
      @sfie9388 4 года назад

      I also have that. Every time I feel like I am not sure where north is I freak out, luckily that has only happened three times. I absolutely don't understand how people who don't have instinctive navigation survive and get anywhere and how they don't freak out

    Hi Guys, Another awesome video. Thanks so much for sharing your lives with us. I enjoy seeing it and hearing your stories. You asked about perceptions. When I took a survival class we discussed ways to keep track of which way is north, the instructor taught us how to use an analog watch and a small stick to make a compass. From that drill I figured out a way to get a pretty good approximation of which way various compass points are. Most of us have a clue if it is early morning, midday-ish or late afternoon. During these times knowing which way is generally north is pretty easy. In early morning if you face the sun North is to your left. At midday if you face the sun, in the Northern Hemisphere, north is behind you and in the late afternoon if you face the sun North is to your right. Even in a concrete jungle like New York you usually can figure out where the sun is. On really overcast days it can be a bit more difficult because of how the clouds diffuse the light but usually, if you look carefully you can find a shadow to help you locate the sun. I hope that helps. Also I do believe that one of our innate perceptions is magnetic fields including the earth's magnetic field. On most people this perception is never developed, I myself do not claim to have mine developed much but I very much believe that it is there and can be developed.

    Hi guys. I wanted to say that years ago I was shocked while playing on stage with 110v for about 45 seconds. Since then I can seem to tell direction fairly well. If I stand in the middle of a forest, with no landmarks or ability to see the sun, I will state that whichever direction I’m facing and be correct almost all of the time. Even more odd is that I’m almost exactly 19 degrees more than true (direction), if I pull out a phone to check. I think this was due to being shocked as I never had this ability prior. Love the videos and your adventures. Cheers!

    Growing up in Oz as a cub scout I could always tell which way was which. I once got 5 guys back to the car after 6 hours walking on a featureless outback plain once they finally started listening to the right person. Everyone had guns so the arguments were tense. I did find that forays into the northern hemisphere were harder. I travelled through 42 US states before GPS and could always navigate new cities by remembering to reverse my instincts.
    But if I tell my wife to go east she just hits me.
    Soggy Wheatbix only works if you know which way is Never.

      I've always had this ability too, but when I moved to the Northern Hemisphere, for some reason my inner sense of direction was off by 90 degrees. I understand 180 degrees, but why 90? If you asked me to point North, for the first few months at least, I would pick East. Always 90 degrees clock-wise.

Little Lenny is just a ray of sunshine, he is so happy, always has a smile on his face and he is very cheeky little boy, you couldn't imagine life without him. While I'm here, have you upgraded to a portable freezer so you can store all the fish Riley catches, that little freezer in you fridge is a joke. I have a 80L Waceo in my camper trailer and a 50L in the car, so need to get a portable fridge/freezer.
