- Snakes are amazing creatures that deserve much more respect than we give them. I love going out and looking for and photographing snakes in the wild, so I wanted to make some videos to teach others how to find these beautiful creatures as well.
Check out the first two videos in this series:
How to Find Snakes: Looking Under Artificial Cover - • How to Find Snakes: Lo...
How to Find Snakes: Hiking Habitat -
• How to Find Snakes: Hi...
Road cruising is perhaps one of the easiest ways to find snakes, although it does require patience and unfortunately involves burning fossil fuels if you are driving a gas-powered car. Safety is very important when road cruising, so be mindful of the hazards if you decide to give it a try. This method allows you to cover a lot of ground and often encounter a wide range of wildlife.

Have you ever been road cruising for snakes?
Yes
Great editing on this one! keep em coming man! loving it! I flipped my first ever milk snake today completely unexpectedly while searching for ringnecks lol! IM PUMPED!!!!!!
DOUBLEO (obsession outdoors) thanks, glad you enjoyed it. Also WOOOOO!! That’s awesome! Milksnakes are awesome and not always the easiest to find. Congrats!
You cruise my favorite habitat in the world in this video. Awesome job!
None So Herpetological it’s definitely one of my favorites, if not my favorite as well!
@@naturewithgabe So much variation in pine savannas like that, which we sadly don't get in Tennessee.
Well done Gabe and a bunch of cool critters to boot. That passenger side can be something to watch for when cruising also. Can't tell you the number of times I've gotten out (as a passenger) when pulled over and had a prairie rattlesnake hiding in the weeds.
Smetlogik thanks! Yes, you are absolutely right...if there are snakes on the road there have to be snakes on the shoulder. Good point!
@@naturewithgabe yeah, even scooting snakes off the road at night I've run into other venomous snakes on the side. Just one of those awareness things when cruising.
Smetlogik I recently went to scoot a banded waternsnake off the road and found a scarlet kingsnake on the short walk back to the car! Always have to stay attentive!
@@naturewithgabe Heck yeah!
Excellent Video....Good preservation education.
I completely enjoy your vids. Especially like that you also include the scientific names, don't ever stop. Thanks so much.
Thanks!!
This was awesome Gabe! I’m loving this series, and road cruising was a very appropriate addition to it. You got some amazing finds, those cottonmouths were especially gorgeous. We just got our lifer Eastern Mud Turtle in Maryland, so it was cool to see one on your channel. Can’t wait for more!
- Harrison and Evan
The Wildlife Brothers thanks for watching! Congratulations on the lifer! The one in this video was actually my lifer as well!
Hey Gabe! I have a small proposition to ask of you if that’s okay. I’m not sure if you know Chris Egnoto from the RUclips channel Nature Now, but he’s a long time friend of Evan and me and a really cool wildlife educator. He’s been a super passionate and strong voice in the community for many years, but he’s suffered some health problems over the years, and recently things have taken a turn for the worst.
He recently had spinal surgery, and unfortunately yesterday he was admitted to the hospital again due to severe pain in his neck, and it’s looking like he’s gonna be bedridden for a while. His summer is probably shot, and after years of setbacks and hardship, he is really gutted about it.
His community tab post shows a little bit of his pain, but he’s the kind of guy who would never share anything unless he was in serious serious pain, physically or emotionally. So, I wanted to put together a little video for him with a bunch of wildlife RUclipsrs wishing him support and encouraging him to stay strong for the months ahead, and I was wondering if you’d be willing to send in a clip for that video.
You can introduce yourself in the clip if you don’t know Chris personally, and then just make a 15-30 second clip with a positive and supportive message, just to cheer him up a bit. I know you are going through a crazy time at the moment as well, so if you aren’t able to do this clip it is 100% okay, no worries there. But I am just reaching out to all the voices in the community who I really respect, and you are definitely among them.
If you can, just email me the clip via gmail/google drive link in the next 10 days or so, but there’s no actual timeframe so no rush. To contact us, shoot us an email at TheWildlifeBrothers@gmail.com. I hope you’re doing well, and if you can participate in this it would be greatly appreciated!
- Harrison
The Wildlife Brothers I’ve never met Chris but I’ve been enjoying his channel for a while and would love to participate! Thanks for reaching out! I’ll send a video when I get the chance!
Thank you Gabe! Send a clip whenever it’s most convenient for you, no rush
Great videography and messaging. I really like your content and will enjoy future installments. Good luck with your channel!
jrjordan1947 glad you enjoyed. Thank you so much for watching.
This was a great video, I used some of your tips and went road cruising for the first time and we seen a three and half foot black kingsnake, a ribbon snake, a banded water snake, a dekay's brown snake, and a four foot black racer in only 2 hours of road cruising!
BamaHerps wow! That’s really good! Sounds like you have a wonderful area to cruise! Great job.
Nice Gabe! Definitely enjoyed your production process. The informative tips went well with the footage inserts and it flowed nicely! I'll definitely be checking out more of your videos. (And I know it was a video for finding snakes...but that armadillo was awesome!)
Thank you! I appreciate that feedback! Let me know if you have any other thoughts and/or recommendations. Yes, armadillos are always fun to see and quite common down here!
Nice job! Well put together video.
Amanda Z thank you! I appreciate it.
Good stuff, man!
Wakefield Wildlife thanks!
I love your vids! Really informative!! 😁
BaitBusters Fishing thank you! Glad you like them!
Very good video! Great photography! You had a lot of good tips. It sucks to find dead ones, but if you’re out there, you’ll save the live ones! Last month when I went herping, I was 2&2 - I found 2 dead & 2 live. Hopefully next time, the ratio is a bit better!
Cat Bird thanks! Yeah sometimes I find all dead and sometimes all alive! But you are right, it is a great feeling saving ones that would otherwise likely get killed. Glad you enjoyed the video, thanks for the comment.
Amazing video! The diversity you saw was incredible. Question about the mud turtle: was its carapace broken or was that just crud on its back? Keep doing what you're doing; love your content!!
Kayla Allen thanks! The mud turtle carapace had some dirt and flaking scutes. Nothing to be worried about, thankfully.
Turtle rescue !!! :O
Natalia Rivera oh yeah!
super ❤️👍🔔
What are the best conditions
(time and temperatures) for road cruising for snakes?
It depends on what species you are hoping to find/what habitat you are in, but in general, an hour before and after sunset and warmer weather tend to be good. You can cruise any time of day but dusk/dawn and day cruising can all produce reliably depending on what areas you are in/time of year. I’d say start in warm months an hour before/after sunset and then experiment from there!
@@naturewithgabe Thanks!
Your viewers should know that most states have strict laws governing herping, in the field and on the road. Every state is different. In Texas you are supposed to have a valid hunting permit with a special reptile stamp, not just for collecting, but even for just handling and photographing reptiles and amphibians on the road and public right-of-way. There are laws about parking and what to wear as well. I know a guy who spent a couple of nights in jail in Arizona.
Thoughts on preferred speed? Depends on conditions or activity?
Yeah it depends on conditions and how good your eyes are. Between 10-30 is probably most common but some people cruise a bit faster.
What’s the best time to go road cruising in in Florida? Central Florida
I don’t know for sure but I’d imagine cruising spring and fall could be good along with summer nights.
@@naturewithgabe thanks 🙏
does looking for eyeshine ever help when road cruising at night?
It can sometimes, but typically when trying for eye shining, the best method is to have a light held up by your eyes so you can see the optimal reflections from the eye. Since headlights aren’t right by your eyes, you don’t get the best reflection of a lot of animals…but it doesn’t hurt to be on the lookout for eye shine!
