I've always loved Echo & The Bunnymen. This song which was in heavy rotation on MTV was probably their biggest splash in America, but the band already had an incredible catalog of songs before this album ever dropped. And oh yes, they did have another modest hit with their cover of The Doors' "People Are Strange" when it landed on The Lost Boys soundtrack.
Ian McCulloch - vocals/rhythm guitar; Les Pattinson - bass; Will Sergeant - lead guitar; Pete De Freitas - drums. Their first five albums were magnificent - and their debut, 'Crocodiles' (1980) was a standout. They went on a hiatus for a few years following the album this track ('Lips Like Sugar') appeared on (even replacing McCulloch as lead singer at one point!) but never managed to regain their earlier magic.
Echo and the Bunnymen are still touring. I saw them last year and hope to catch yhem again this spring. The band sounded great. Ian's voice is still stong and unique. Try to catch them live if you have a chance
When my friend first played this for me, I thought the line was "lips like chickens". So would sing like that just to annoy her. I still hear it as "chickens" from time to time.
I loved Echo and the Bunnymen back in the day, one of my favourite 80’s groups and I hope you continue exploring their music. If you like a great guitar, haunting lyrics, catchy hooks and clear vocals, please do check out Suede (known variously as London Suede in the US). They were one of the early bands of the 90s that helped launch the new “British invasion” to the USA at the time. Similar to groups like Pulp and influencing other bands like Oasis and Blur. You’d really appreciate the guitar on hits like “Animal Nitrate”, “Trash” “shes in Fashion” “Beautiful Ones” and “Lazy” to name a few…..
OMG the vocals cease to give me chills-remembering being in high school and thinking how this sound was simply sublime-this was the soundtrack of our youth! Viva Lips Like Sugar!
Loved these guys since the way back days! Ian McCulloch is just brilliant and prolific! You're so right about his enthrallingly haunting voice. "The Cutter", "Seven Seas", "Dancing Horses", and "Ocean Rain" (and actually the whole Ocean Rain album too) would be some of my favorite suggestions, but there are soooo many more, too many to name.
Echo and the Bunnymen did a good cover of People are strange, Also Richard Butler from the Psychodelic Furs has an excellent voice, Heartbreak beat is a great song.
Grew up from a kid into a teen in the 80's. Truly a magical time. I'm 53 now and I'm the one that plays loud music in the car and my kids just roll their eyes at me.
I am glad you are enjoying this band. They are one of my favorites. They have so many great songs. A few to consider are "Show of Strength", "My Kingdom", "Never Stop", "Bedbugs and Ballyhoo", and "Villiers Terrace".
Haunting is a perfect description for Echo. First time I saw them was on the Ocean Rain tour and the whole show was backlit and just created that haunting vibe. Will be seeing them again in May 40 years later!!!

Thanks. Been enjoying your trip through time. Saw them at San Diego state university in late eighties when I was already in my late 30. Variety shows in the 50’s and 60’s introduced us to music of our parents and then the rising rock groups. Still listening to new music, mostly alternative. Almost 74 and I avoid living in the musical past but you have taken me back in the most endearing way. And yes I was at Woodstock, but only Sunday morning until Monday morning leaving in muddy bell bottoms as Hendrix was playing The Star Spangled Banner. Hitched there with a NY Times reporter and hitched back to upstate NY with a car full of worn out teenagers. Keep up the positive energy.
How about some Psychedelic Furs in keeping with the New Wave era. You can't go wrong with "Love my way" or "Heartbreak beat" for some of those deep lyrics presented with the New Wave flair of the 80s. If you want to hear something hypnotic, check out the The Stone Roses and their song "I Wanna Be Adored" from the early 90s. Haunting music with simple lyrics that will cast a spell over you. The official video is the one to watch.
Yes!!! Finally listening to this one! If you have Sirius XM, listen to channel 33, First Wave, to get an education on this type of music. A deep-cut band from the 80s is Bronski Beat. Check them out.
Thank you! Mac (Ian McCulloch) is my comfort voice. 💜 When I first heard the Bunnymen back in the early 80s, I went out and bought everything I could find. My love for them has only increased through the years. Nocturnal Me, Bedbugs and Ballyhoo, The Cutter, In the Margins, I Want to Be There (When You Come), and A Promise, and this one are a few of my absolute favorites of theirs. In the last few days, I was listening to The Cutter; and it brought me back to listening to it while in the car with my parents so many years ago (they’ve both been gone since the late 80s). It makes me so happy to see/hear you guys giving them a chance. I look forward to anything else that you react to. Thank you! 💜💜💜
The Cutter Do It Clean Never Stop Heaven Up Here Supermellow Man Rescue Buried Alive Heads Will Roll You’ve fallen into the rabbit hole of one of the best bands ever!
The Cutter is probably my favorite Echo and the Bunnymen song. You guys should also check out Sisters of Mercy, particularly the songs Dominion/Mother Russia or Lucretia My Reflection. Just know that the band does have a male lead singer, so they wouldn’t be an appropriate “Female Friday” suggestion. For “Female Friday” then I’d highly recommend the Cocteau Twins and their song Lorelei.
J and Amber, thank you do much ❤ for hitting this one up!! I was stoked to see this pop up!! Couldn't wait for your reactions!! Glad you loved it, I knew you would. @RobSquadReactions
Saw them in concert near my neighborhood in San Diego in late 2022 and they still sound great. Bring on the Dancing Horses is a must and if you dig the vibe, Under the Milky Way by The Church is, too! Much love to you and yours...
"Nocturnal Me" is one of their darkest, most sultry songs, as may be alluded to in the title. Love this whole album, and all I've heard from the band. It doesn't hurt that he looks like a male Anya Taylor-Young, or that the video looked like it was directed by Fritz Lang. Or that everyone in the video was good-looking, with lips like sugar.
Anyone put them onto the fact that Echo and the Bunnymen are from the same place as The Beatles. Some good vintage footage of my hometown on this video ❤
You're both right! The textures are largely downcast, making it sound gloomy in the loveliest of ways. But it's a jaunty, upbeat melody and chord progression. Echo & The Bunnymen was often compared to The Doors and considered a return of Psychedelia. Echo & The Bunnymen started out with a sort of angular, aggressive, twangy Postpunk. It sounded moody but was often exultant. Just like The Cure (check out "Pictures of You" next), Depeche Mode, Siouxsie & The Banshees, Simple Minds, or even U2 (check out "All I Want Is You" next), it crossed over in the mid-to-late '80s onto US Top40 radio with a sort of Alternative Pop. A lot of the time the songs were written in minor keys and featured certain textures like deep or haunting vocals; twangy or glassy-sounding guitars; and moaning, sustained synthesizer textures over sturdy, danceable Rock beats. Occasionally the lyrics will be all sunshine and rainbows, even though the music sounds like a rainy day. You've dipped your toes in with The Cure and Depeche Mode, You've dug into U2 and I think you've already heard all of Tears for Fears' most worthwhile hits. You got started with Siouxsie (check out "Peek-a-Boo" next), and Echo (check out "The Cutter"). But just know that almost any single or video these types of bands released between the late '70s and early '90s will get lots of views because acts like that have insanely loyal fanbases and you guys have enough reach to start showing up in new feeds. Most of these bands were very prolific and put out a new single every few months and an album every year or so. That's a lot of clicks to sustain you, moving forward. Other acts along similar stylistic lines with similar fandoms and overlapping followings are The Smiths/Morrissey (check out "Everyday Is Like Sunday"), Joy Division (R.I.P. 1978-80, watch the lyric video for "Transmission"), Love and Rockets (have you checked them out yet? If not, start with "So Alive", a US#3 on the US Hot100! It also topped the Alternative Charts for five weeks). The Church crossed over to the Pop charts with "Under the Milky Way" (1988/US#24), Also, Erasure, OMD (Orchestral Maneuvres in the Dark), and Pet Shop Boys have a million hits each, so don't sleep on the Synthpop giants. Especially Depeche Mode, though (check out "Never Let Me Down Again" next!). They are low-key one of the biggest bands ever. Rabid fans all over the globe - STILL(?)!!! New Order isn't strictly Synthpop, but they have a lot of classic singles beyond what you've heard so far. Check out the official video for "Regret" (1993/US#28), which is basically a guitar-driven Power Pop song. America had a few acts with similar followings, including Talking Heads (check out "Nothing But Flowers" next), the B-52's (check out "Deadbeat Club" next), R.E.M. (check out "Fall on Me" next), and 10,000 Maniacs (Natalie Merchant's old band was great, check out "These Are the Days"! You will thank me. It's a little bit like Norah Jones singing for R.E.M.). I'm sure I'm forgetting lots of acts (check out Cocteau Twins "Iceblink Luck" and "Dear God" by XTC), but I'm so glad y'all liked "Lips Like Sugar" as much as you did. It's been one of my favorites since I was a kid. I'm not sure I ever realized the lips Ian McCulloch was singing about were actually his own, LOL. He's such a character! His old interviews from the 1980s were wild! And if you guys are ever worried about running out of songs to react to - trust me. You won't. :)
Siouxsie from Siouxsie and the Banshees was also in a band called The Creatures - debut single was Kiss The Girl (main instrument was marimba), many other track including "Say". All of them a bit different to the norm. In addition should also check out the band The Mission - Tower of Strength

I'm glad you're enjoying Echo and the Bunnymen. They were one of my favorite bands back in the 80s when I was stationed in England. There are so many songs to recommend but I think you'll enjoy their Doors cover of "People are Strange". Personally, I liked Seven Seas because of the melody. The video of Seven Seas is way more lighthearted than the two songs you've reviewed but Ian McCulloch, the lead singer's vocals is still dark.
Under The Milkyway Tonight by The Church has great vocals and is very moody and similar. You'll love this

A big part of the Liverpool scene, music capital of the world. fantastic voice and music.
One of the cool 80s songs I really liked and sounded great in the clubs
I saw E’&B’ on the tour for this album in 1988.
They came to play at the arena at my college.
Film from Liverpool, same city as those Beatles.
The 80s had such magical music. This is one of my favorite 80s bands 👍🏻
Oh I just loved 80s music so much, and Echo & the Bunnymen were a big reason why.
And Suede are still touring and putting out great albums! Autofiction was brilliant.
"Dancing Horses" is one of Echo and the Bunnymen's finest songs, very evocative.
OMG the vocals cease to give me chills-remembering being in high school and thinking how this sound was simply sublime-this was the soundtrack of our youth! Viva Lips Like Sugar!
80's personified. Loved dancing to this back in the day
Loved these guys since the way back days!
Im an huge fan of bunnymen since 1983 ❤
Echo and the Bunnymen and this track finally! Hope to see more people become aware of " old" music.
Echo and the Bunnymen did a good cover of People are strange, Also Richard Butler from the Psychodelic Furs has an excellent voice, Heartbreak beat is a great song.
Seven Seas is one of their best ! You will love it!
Another good one by Echo and The Bunnyman is “Gone, Gone, Gone”.
Never Stop is my favorite Echo song
Grew up from a kid into a teen in the 80's. Truly a magical time. I'm 53 now and I'm the one that plays loud music in the car and my kids just roll their eyes at me.
Echo & The Bunnymen the Cutter, Never Stop, Ocean Rain (live)
I love this song! A great 80's hit!
One of my all-time favorite 80's bands. Saw them live in Boston in the day and they're just as good live as they are on vinyl!
Thanks for this reaction! This is in my Top 10 songs list of all time. Just an amazing tune that for me has stood the test of time! Cheers!
We didn’t know how good we had it back in the 80s.
I am glad you are enjoying this band. They are one of my favorites. They have so many great songs. A few to consider are "Show of Strength", "My Kingdom", "Never Stop", "Bedbugs and Ballyhoo", and "Villiers Terrace".
Never Stop live is a must
A incredible band! The March Violets is another band from that era.
Man this song is a banger
Yes!!! Finally listening to this one! If you have Sirius XM, listen to channel 33, First Wave, to get an education on this type of music. A deep-cut band from the 80s is Bronski Beat. Check them out.
One of the best dance tracks of the 80's...and a sultry velvet voice that could charm the pants off you.
Additional Echo & The Bunnymen to check out: " Bring on the Dancing Horses" .
I'm 57 and taking my 2 teenage sons to see Echo live next month can't wait
Echo and the Bunnymen are easily one of my top 5 bands....great song.
"Nothing lasts forever" is another great song of theirs, try it old bean, tis delightful.
I’m 59 the 80’s were my time, this song is a classic
Thank you! 💜💜💜
I think Echo and the Bunnymen, The Cure, and Psychedelic Furs have a lot in common, other than carded hair!.
The Cutter and Back of Love are bangers
Top 5 80"s song, no disputing
"So in love", and "electricity" by OMD are great and definitely recommend checking them out.❤
The Cutter
Do It Clean
Never Stop
Heaven Up Here
Supermellow Man
Rescue
Buried Alive
Heads Will Roll
You’ve fallen into the rabbit hole of one of the best bands ever!
Echo and the bunnymen are still touring and they are absolutely brillant
This brings back such good memories. Started dancing around like I was 25 again.
J and Amber, thank you do much ❤ for hitting this one up!! I was stoked to see this pop up!! Couldn't wait for your reactions!! Glad you loved it, I knew you would.
@RobSquadReactions
Bedbugs & Ballyhoo by Echo & the Bunnymen
Cities in Dust by Siouxsie & the Banshees
Fascination Street by the Cure
I saw them live in 1987 as an undergrad. Fantastic concert. This is my favorite track by them.
They are 1 of the best 80s bands.
Echo And The Bunnymen "The Cutter"
.
You should definitely react to “The Cutter” by the Bunnymen, but also a favourite band of mine are The Mission so give “Wasteland” a listen.
The VERVE!!! Echo and the Bunnymen Bring on the Dancing Horses, Cutter, Silver
Great shots of Liverpool in the opening frames.
Ian McCulloch lead singer, Will Sergeant guitar, Les Pattinson bass, Pete DeFreitas (RIP) drums.
Their second album Heaven Up Here is a dark post punk lp that rocks. If you want something really dark try their song Over the Wall.
The 2 best hauntingly beautiful voices from 80's New Wave is Ian McCullough from Echo & The Bunnymen and Stephen Morrisey of The Smiths.
"Wise Up! Sucker" by Pop Will Eat Itself ... will blow your mind.
"Bloodhound gang - Fire water burn" you won't regret
You won't. :)
Would like to see "Love of the Common People" by Paul Young or "Chorus" by Erasure, among others.
Siouxsie from Siouxsie and the Banshees was also in a band called The Creatures - debut single was Kiss The Girl (main instrument was marimba), many other track including "Say". All of them a bit different to the norm. In addition should also check out the band The Mission - Tower of Strength
Every time I hear this song it reminds me of my friend and I cruising down CA-71 (before it became a freeway) headed toward Cal-Poly Pomona back in the 80's. We were so young and had the whole world in front of us.
Echo And The Bunnymen - Cutter / The Dancing Horses
Culture Club - Church Of The Poison Mind
The cutter is even better
Echo and the Bunnymen have so many mysterious and dark songs. I would recommend "Over the Wall" or "All My Colours"
Seeing Echo & The Bunnymen for the first time May 11 in New Orleans
Grew up listening to them...amazing band
Jay and Amber i loved this. Really good song.
Hi, you two! It's Andrew Erroch fae Paisley in Scotland the here again. You should check out this band's cover of The Doors song 'People Are Strange', which featured prominently in the movie, 'The Lost Boys' in 1987. They always come back to Glasgow to perform and theyll be back-up again in May this year.Their hometown of Liverpool has many similarities to Glasgow. Æx 🙏
This is one of those songs that takes me back to my youth in the 80's. Brings a tear to my eye.
