Not sure if the name or link changed but it now directs to "briidea common wire kit" and specifically says "cannot be used as R power or C common wire" though seems very similar to what you've wired up for a C wire. I assume there's no issue then, just add it says it can't be used a C wire.
Common mistake I see with these c wire how to videos. You pull off the old thermostat and assume there is no c wire. It may be there it's just not hooked up, look at the other end of the cable in the furnace. Many of my friends and family that put in a smart thermostat don't need the adapter. Most houses I've seen that are 90's and newer use 8 conductor cable for the thermostat and only use 4 of them, the others are tucked back in the wall. Investigate a little further see if rerouting a new cable is possible as it is preferable. 8 conductor thermostat wire can be found at local hardware stores for a few bucks.
This comment helped me! I'm only reading 16v on the spare wire behind the wall (prev thermostat used 4, r y w b, but B was hooked to Y and the Y is the spare wire behind the wall). I taped the yellow wire up since idk why it's getting low voltage
I did have to install one of those add a wire units for one client of mine. For another, I was able to run a new thermostat cable to get enough wires. On the thermostat I just installed for my home, it indicated that I could wire G to C at both the thermostat and furnace, with a jumper between Y and G at the furnace. I guess you lose the ability to control the fan manually, but it still runs when heating or cooling. My old thermostat only used 4 wires, so I thought I would have to deal with that. Fortunately, there were enough wires in the thermostat cable. I just needed to connect one of the unused wires to the furnace's C terminal. BTW, I think of C as Cyan, thus using the blue wire.
If people want something that is easier and cheaper for a smart thermostat. Buy am Ecobee that comes with a PEK (power extender kit). Not to mention the PEK is magnetic.
I'm trying to go through all your videos. I have a question for you the thermostat wire from my furnace to the thermostat is two wires. I was thinking of maybe putting one of those smart thermostats in which it sounds like two wires ain't going to do it. The basement is completely open so I assume I could change the two wires out to maybe a four or five wire would be your recommendation? Thanks Michael ☺️
Honestly it will be easier to do this add a wire kit. You can go from a two wire to a system that will fun heat and air conditioning. Michael Sheeder from a Gas Technician, my advice would be to install a new 5 conductor t-stat wire and if possible even an 8 conductor if you want to prepare for the near future. Especially if your basement is already open, now is the time to do it. Any other advice is just a money grab or bad advice altogether. Cheers hope that helps!

Would the add a wire solve this? we also only have 4 wires coming from the unit on the roof to the inside where the thermostat is at. Thanks for your time in advance! 🙏
I wished you would have mentioned the small fuse at the furnace that can be blown if power isn’t shutoff from it. The blown fuse will derail the new thermostat installation. Good video.
Looking at the connection diagram, both G (fan) and Y (AC unit) are connected to a single "blue" wire through each own diode. Would it be better to connect W and Y through diodes because Heating and AC never work together? Do you know if this Add a wire adapter works with Amazon thermostats?
