People gave up on the machine too quick. Dig deep into the MV and you will find gold. Best hardware sequencer I have ever used. I say oh well to those that want instant gratification. You can have your new machines with buggy software. I got a best kept secret here!
The MV is the most powerful and flexible hardware sequencer ever made! That is a strong statement, but you really can't even begin to understand the power and flexibility that lies beneath the hood of this thing! You are right, if the world only knew. Very few people have tapped into the secret knowledge of this sequencer. The things this sequencer allows you to do...........unreal!
@reedereed What you heard was not an audio track. That was straight off of youtube. I had computer going into my mixer as well as the MV. I let video clip play and just hit the MV play button on the 1 beat. I used tap tempo to lock in BPM's and used my ear and some experimentation to dial in the swing feel.
@JoeyC214 Those drums were from Impeach the President ( a famous break) . I dont have the wax just an .mp3. SO what I did was chop it with recycle. Import to my daw (reaper) for some light fx and then rendered the file and put on a thumb drive. I then put file in Serato Scratch, pitched my turntable to 45 and sampled into my SP 404. I then recorded SP 404 to Cassette Tape. From There I recorded file to Digital multitracker, Then back to computer and rechopped in recycle. Then I made an .MVO
@Angel Rivera. Okay.. but Grap Luva uses a SP, there is no doubt about that. It locked right into his swing. If it were nowhere close, it would have been way off. I used an SP for years so I know the SP swing well. As far as ring modulation? I never said anything about the SP sound.
@ Ben crea. No assumption was made. This has more to do with the SP has some magical swing school of thought that's out there. That's why I said I didn't know what type of swing he used, or even if at all like you said. Video just shows technique to use the ridiculous quantize options that the MV has to lock into another machines " so called feel"
Thanks.I did pull my MV8800 back out, clean it off,so I can keanr it this time...I was so used to my Ensoniq ASR10,and really didnt study the MV,yet I will now.I am just trying to print a manual, since I have no idea where it is..
really enjoyed this video very informative !! thank you for this video ! i also got the mv 8800 and i was just used to getting my own type of swing out it , doing that i found worked for me but this is a great video . you learn something new everyday .
wax you a beast fam keep em comin brotha much respect...ima die hard mv fan for life slept on machine you really bring the power to life that most can understand...thankx again for all your work
@rockhills No. What is going on is imagine if you were at the computer and played a video on youtube. You then hit start on said sequencer and tried to link them up. They are connected in no way and on opposite sides of the room. Thats whats going on. I had video running on youtube and just hit play on my MV (they are not hook up midi or audio wise). I figured out the BPM of the video beat and hit play at start of measure. Notice no double kicks or snares. The swing is recreated faithfully.
@drumatic that goes for just about any drum machine out there, the more midi notes/events it has to process, the more jitter or error or just plain sloppiness starts to creep in as the processor starts to struggle.
Some of the comments on this video have always been funny to me over the years. It’s literally in sync and people still say it’s not the same. The sound is a different argument, this video is about swing. I understand people love their machines though lol. I’ve always wished you could go back to look at the input quantize like you could the track quantize. It was nice coming back to some classics. MV is still the greatest sampler of all time. Peace Wax Dat. Hope you’re well.
oDJOldskull what are your eyes open to? I left something out unless you have figured it out. I'll do a vid at some other time to share where you can go with this.
WaxDat8800 Man, I still claim you're incredible. It's really not the equipment but man behind it. That's first thing you taught me. I make good beats but I was always afraid that 'what if I lose my mv, i won't be making dope stuff anymore'. Now I say, geez, even with akai s2000 and amiga 1200 I'll be banging. And second thing - this time more technical - I figured out cool values for swing in terms of layering hihat. It gives that Dilla feeling to it, fits perfectly to jazz samples. Love you man, this video was I think the most important influence I ever fell on. And I say that with regard to Dilla, MF Doom, Knxwledge, dj harrison, premier etc. I have downloaded it off from youtube afraid that you can once delete it or your account may be shut down hehe. Now it's time to study it and experiment. Thanks once again, you're amazing.
oDJOldskull I got more tricks on the way. Check out the demystifying the shuffle video. I'll try to get more vids up soon. I think you'll find them interesting.
@WaxDat8800 yo what drum kits did u use on ur own drums was it a kit from the mv... I got a mv just wondering what kit that is sounds dope thanks for the tips I mean I've dont this before not like you did it peace!
Love the video bro! That's some great info on the quantize function of the MV. Dope! Did you make a audio track first then put your beat on top? However you did it, I'm feelin' it. I usually use the quantize just for like one instrument, like maybe the kick, then I take it off completely.
No MPC vid needed. I gave the formula in this video. All you have to do is find a song that has the swing you want and you know uses a MPC. Then follow what I did in this video. There really is no magic to swing.
forgive my ignorance. When you say over-locking the shuffle onto the grid input quantize. Does this mean you first record the drum part with the input quantize and then when the sequence is recorded you tweak it with the shuffle settings ?
ha loved this video, but must admit I had same inital reaction; I thought author was tryna say 'overclocking' (which means running a CPU faster than its rated mhz - speed - which is often possible and leads to better performance, but is risky as CPU may overheat & melt) - tryna make sense of that idea I figured he meant to overLOAD the CPU with so much MIDI data at once that it's processed with latency, perhaps coming out cool in some way. But as a hxc MC-909 & MC-307 user, I now know exactly what he's saying, and so 'double-quantizing' would make perfect sense...because yes the magic of these machines is ALL in the various quanization options, both groove quantization and recording quanitzation modes are super important to every single note I record in my grooveboxes, but I hadn't quite thought of their interplay! On the mc-909 you get slightly different options, but I see how this could be magic - like, I always do 16th note quantization (unless im gonna play faster notes like 16th triplets, i'll set it accordingly if so) and set between 87%-95% quantization amount for realtime recording quantize. But now im seeing that I could set the %amount during rec much lower, but then clean up strays with the groove quantization later!
Ahhh but what you guys fail to realize the SP-1200 is very organic and the machine changes swing patterns every 4 bars... especially the more notes it has to carry pPq. But definitely dig what you're doing!
not an mv user. never even seen one in person. am i understanding correctly...through a little work, you can play a beat through the mv and it will lock your beat (on the mv) to the beat that's playing through the mv??
Raphael Gordon. good question. I got the answer. If you want to sound close to an MPC, Set input quantize to 120 and a 50 percent rate...The problem is sequencer resolution. MPCs for the most part are 96 per quarter note. The MV is 480 per quarter note. The higher the resolution, the worst or more exposed your sloppy timing becomes. Most people, unless they are drummers with years of metronome training, are not as tight with their timing as they would think. It takes practice on the MV to get your timing right with the quantize off. What you are experiencing is normal coming from the MPC. That's why people used double time on the MPC because it "tricks" sequencer into 192 ticks per quarter note. And people use that for a looser and not so rigid feel.
WaxDat8800 yo ive been making beats without metronome on my mv 8000 for years cos i couldnt get the timing ma mans was like yo?? how you get that weird drum patterning..now ive discovered your channel bless up don dada ..no wonder people said my beats were unique..lol
Trudat. I guess when there's too many options it can make me forget what got me here in the first place. "My feel, My swing, My shuffle". In reality what timing a machine has is irrelevant. If I get what's in my head out in the air mission accomplished. Thanx for the reply. Ones up.
WaxDat8800 nah i chopped a song put the chops on midi patch, now i played my chops how i want but it sounds choppy, so i want to timestretch each chop to make it fit tempo.
WaxDat8800 The tempo is 90. The chops are about the half the time off before the next chop, making it sound choppy. I tried command/timestretch on each pad, but the timestretch makes it sound horrible.
You know whats funny is that i own 2 sp1200's and the swing is no wear close ... You cannot emu-late Emu Sp1200 .. As far as swing , and ring modulation ..
People gave up on the machine too quick. Dig deep into the MV and you will find gold. Best hardware sequencer I have ever used. I say oh well to those that want instant gratification. You can have your new machines with buggy software. I got a best kept secret here!
Did you bang that patter out on the tracks? Or did you step record it in?
The MV is the most powerful and flexible hardware sequencer ever made! That is a strong statement, but you really can't even begin to understand the power and flexibility that lies beneath the hood of this thing! You are right, if the world only knew. Very few people have tapped into the secret knowledge of this sequencer. The things this sequencer allows you to do...........unreal!
@hazeentertainmenthiphop what’s not true?
@hazeentertainmenthiphop ok. What is not a true? You gotta come better than that.
I never knew that the "feel" of some of my favorite songs was a machine. I tried your technique and it worked perfectly. Amazing.
Hey man I just wanted to say thank you for your videos they are a great help to MV users.
+Tonload M No problem.
+WaxDat8800 do you have a Instagram account ? If so what is it ?
+Tonload M Waxdat8800
Had to revisit this too!! This killed all that MV doesn't have the SP swing myth!! Dope!!
Dope video man ! I always keep coming back to this video.
@beataroundthekush. I feel you. But it was just meant to show that the MV can do anything you want it to, old or new.
@JoeyC214 Those drums were from Impeach the President ( a famous break) . I dont have the wax just an .mp3. SO what I did was chop it with recycle. The SP locks on if you midi-clock / sync it to a master... but if you let it be, the SP goes off crazy... that's because it's alive.
How do you work with these settings? utilizing input quantize needs u to play the pattern in real time right?
Theres settings as you play in plus settings once its in in real time….and then you got the edit list….
Thanks.I did pull my MV8800 back out, clean it off,so I can keanr it this time...I was so used to my Ensoniq ASR10,and really didnt study the MV,yet I will now.I am just trying to print a manual, since I have no idea where it is..
yo, this video made a big impression on my decision to snag an MV8k, thanks amigo!
thanks man truly appreciated the vid, just got a mv after years of ebay alerts
Miikka Rekola No prob. Got more on the way.
nice, looking forward to it. watched a bunch of your / a few other vids and after i turned the mv on; booom knew how to use it. ty!
MV is way ahead of it's time, thanks for taking time to make this video fam.
dope just dope. great work i cant wait to purchase this machine so that i can master it the way you and so many others have

Also the way samples are chopped affects swing as does the velocity of ghost notes. As well as a beat that is unquantized.
..(mv8800)..2020.. is still on and popping
Yes it is!
🔥🔥🔥
Great vid. Any thoughts on how to reproduce the sluggish sp606 sequencer ( 96tpq, similar to the mpc60) ? thanks
Thank you Sir you are knowledge
and dedicated to your musical craft ☺👉🎧🔄🔈🔉🔊🔥.

Dziękuję za Video! właśnie stałem się posiadaczem mv 8800

Did you know you can save that setting as a temp plate ,I been using the mv for many years as well as the Emu SP 12 turbo and 1200
Cire Irby yes you absolutely can save as a template.
gotcha. no doubt it's pretty damn on point. respect.

Still got my 8000!! All I do is chop samples... one day I'll get around to using it more like it was designed to be used.
No problem. I'm sure it will make more sense as you get used to it.
Can the mpc do swing like this also? This shit crazy 🔥🚀
Depends on which MPC.
@@WaxDat8800 mpc x?
@@PAraboliconly I never played with the MPC X so I’m not sure how it’s swing works.
Im glad all you guys like this technique. I got some other things waiting to put on film when I get time.
bra is there any way you can make a templat with those swings so i can put it in Fl studio. this is dope!!! great work
SM&B Productions hmmm. I’ll have to think about how to do that.

when the world understands what this video means in terms of sequencer flexibility, mv prices will skyrocket

Yo bro how do i timestretch a sample chop without it sounding like crap on mv8000 to match my tempo without using audio phrasing looping??
Chris House Is it in an audio phrase or a midi patch? How long is the chop? I take it we aren’t talking about drum sample, right?
WaxDat8800 nah i chopped a song put the chops on midi patch, now i played my chops how i want but it sounds choppy, so i want to timestretch each chop to make it fit tempo.
WaxDat8800 and when i match the tempo, then resample, it sounds like crap unless i pitch it down, to a pitch i dont want after bpm sync
Chris House How off is the sample from the tempo?
WaxDat8800 The tempo is 90. The chops are about the half the time off before the next chop, making it sound choppy. I tried command/timestretch on each pad, but the timestretch makes it sound horrible.

The SP is pretty tight, but telling you the more notes you add to it, the swingier it gets.
