I think Acola wins nearly all game 5s because he goes full camp mode. He saves it for must win games, so that throws something new at you. (Not that there isnt some camping in games 1-4, but game 5 is basically pure mining behind walls)
Big W for Pink 🙌🏼 I’ve had my expensive bike stolen before (not as bad i know) and it’s seriously instilled trust issues in me, but it was the greatest feeling ever when it was found
Fundamentals are simply the aspects of the game that aren’t character dependent. Movement, positioning, neutral, offense, defense, recovery etc are all examples of fundamentals. People with good fundies know how the game works and are grounded on that so they look smart and efficient when playing. Then you have people who play characters who thrive or die off of gimmicks, and they normally struggle with the fundamentals of the game
26:30 oh my lord THANK YOU TWEEK TALKS. I'm so sick of people telling me "just play Lucina and you will learn how to play Marth!" It makes NO sense. If I want to play Marth, I'm going to play Marth. His sour and tipper mechanics make him function differently from Lucina and he HAS to look for different confirms at different percent ranges (plus the overall feel for the character with the difference in hitstun per hit also has to be taken into account). You can't play Lucina and then become a god with Marth. It never works.
I know for sure Hazmatt is excited about this one 😂. Huge congratulations to Asimo for winning his first ever supermajor with solo RYU! It was incredible to watch him play 🔥 Also I am so glad Pink was able to find his car 🙏
God Tweek's entire rant was so freaking based and cathartic. Literally just play the dang game. So worried about the existential dread behind characters in a game that they could be optimizing instead. Honestly, this is the most balanced of all the Smash games, and I'm sure many would agree. There is no reason not to just play characters you like or think are neat and not care about what anyone has to say about it. If you are good with your character, and you put the time into optimizing the matchups you need, you might be able to figure it out. Counterpicking is maybe the ONLY parameter I would evaluate that could be esoreric in nature, but that could even be resolved by learning through the bad matchups. We literally see it all the time with solo mains conquering tougher matchups played by skilled pilots of those characters. I don't know, man. This entire idea is built off of notions graded subjectively by the community overall, and that basis is built on ideas that change every month as metas shift and new ideas are developed. I think that's why people get so frustrated when people get addicted to tier lists and character "coolness". Just play the dang game
I said it last week, I'll say it again. This show is the most enjoyable to listen to when you guys are just shooting the shit about what you want to. Great episode fellas
so refreshing to hear the rant about directing new players towards marth/lucina. you learn fundamentals from just playing the game lol. there is no magic character that will just give you some well rounded understanding of smash
I am very proud of Akakikusu. He is consistently making top placements with Hero, a character people said was too random to be consistent. Akakikusu is proving Hero to be a very good anti-meta character. Beats all of the zoners like Spamus and Snake while also being good against other meta threats.
The whole fundies talk reminds me of intangibles in NBA players. Everyone has a different way to describe it, but it’s ultimately a way to try and rationalize what you see via the eye test (Also thank god y’all view it that way because I learned the game through little Mac and everybody judges me for it LOL)
the fundamentals of smash should be better understood as a set of skills that have been honed to a point of near perfection, upon which a players style can emerge. So like, the basketball analogy would be when players observe another players perfect shooting form, never missing a layup, always contesting shot attempts on defense, or throwing good passes. It's possible to emerge as a top level talent without having the best fundamentals, as we saw in basketball in the form of Jason Williams (white chocolate), who seemed physically incapable of throwing a routine fundamental chest pass, but upon closer inspection of his skill set, it was clear that his fundemental read of the game was so far ahead that he could afford to style his passing ability.
I’m from Albuquerque, New Mexico. It unfortunately ranks first in the US in car theft, and let me tell you there is NOTHING worse than walking outside expecting to get in your car and it’s just not there haha. Glad it all worked out pink, could’ve been worse, gotta get away from those Kias man 😂
To me fundamentals are tempo control, player rhythm, stage control, combos obviously, ability to predict your opponents moves, imput mastery, clutch factor
In regard to the debate on if locals should count - the main reason they don't (if I understand correctly) is it actively discourages top players from playing often and practicing at locals because bad results there will seriously hurt your ranking. That's bad for the community because locals tend to do better (have more participation from players and audiences alike) when top players show up - its better to have small scale places for people to practice without fear of it negatively impacting them - even top players need to workshop right? (Not a top player so idk how true this is but it makes sense to me)
I can relate to what Marcus said with getting your car stolen. You walk out in the morning to go to your car, see it isn't there, walk around a bit thinking "Maybe I parked it somewhere else" and the realization slowly dawns on you, but you're more confused than anything lol.
Great episode, but I'm kinda tired hearing top players (Gavin here) saying things like "it's just made up rules" about rankings. Well, duh! How else would anyone do a ranking? Feels kinda disrespectful to the people working on these rankings, who put a ton of thoughts into making these rules make sense (more effort than anyone who criticize them). And for those saying there shouldn't even be a ranking: so you're saying we shouldn't seed people, and just place then randomly in a bracket? Some sort of ranking is needed for that, even if some of it is based on different and less "mathematical" criteria.
I think fundamentals are much more simple... do they have control of their character... do they tech... do they understand what their character can do and does what they think will happen happen
I'm pretty sure the argument for not counting locals was that if it's ranked then it can disincentivize top players from attending since they would have everything to lose from not getting 1st and pretty much nothing to gain
Also there are just way too many stacked Japanese locals they would have to include, making the gap even larger between regions. If we count so many less serious events then we get a lot of results that really shouldn’t count
I'm gonna say it, with how close that first set of grands was, there's no way Asimo would've won if it was Acola who made it to winners finals. Acola was already changing his gameplay and that game 5 loss was by the smallest amount possible, so even if he came from losers, if he already played Asimo, it'd be over
I don’t really think you guys are being fair by describing the logic of what counts for rankings as made up. There are good reasons behind them from people that do know what they’re talking about.
Asides from Terry every time I see a FGC play it just feels like they're playing Street Fighter in Smash. Asimo's the only player who feels like he's actually playing Smash. Not just circling through the same bot options.
But playing Mario and practicing actually teaches you fundamentals tho.. compared to other characters where you get so many autopilot hits like Palutena, Samus or Falco, you don't need to develop so many things like short hopping spot dodging and tempo. Mario forces you to use this fundamentals because the character doesn't have so many assist mechanics Ultimate provides. This the reason I think Gluto is top 3 best player in the world because he had to master the game to its deepest core to make Wario viable. Yes he doesn't win all the time but guess to who he loses to? The autopilot characters
Haven't even watched and I already know this is not an episode of Tweek Talks. This is gonna be episode 1.5 of Hazz Heckles.

Glad Pink got his car back. Excellent news.
Fundies are the awareness and execution of risk/reward in any given scenario
Dirty Mike and the Boyz took Pink’s car.
Fundies talk is kinda like bag talk with basketball
Let’s go Asimo! Winning a supermajor with Ryu!
W PINK, congrats on getting back your car. Sad we live in a world where that's a possibility lol.

Maister not dropping a game to anyone but Acola was very impressive. I wonder how he’s gonna do at the Luminosity invitational.
