Lame! i) Sham Shuk Gong's (Shek Khein) decision not file a civil lawsuit or press criminal charges against Leng Shai/Dr Wong for their conspiratorial medical misdeed - second time really of his act of "forgiveness" even after nephew Yhuk Foong's MURDER attempt on his life at the golf course (a nefarious plot woefully/clumsily executed by the way) - presents a rather contradictory profile of his moral conscience, given his resolute, unyielding and unforgiving thirst for vengeance against Heong Keng San's supposed betrayal during WW2 Hong Kong's dark days under the Japanese Army's imperialistic occupation. The dismissal of Leng's service as portrayed is all too subdued in tone and tenor I maintain (furiously). I would, if I were scripting the scenario, have had Leng receive a whopping tongue-lashing, ideally in the presence of other Luei family members, each given reasonable screen time to expend their pent-up spite at Leng. ii) Even York Nam's outburst (finally) is way, way too mild and not invective-filled and stoked-roused enough. Vengeance, sweet vengeance is surely justified here given all the antecedents she had to endure. Director's and scriptwriters' oversight I say! iii) Perhaps too an alternative blockbuster re-write could have Gong accompany Leng, as agreed, to that forthcoming social function to announce their marriage plan formally, but then exposing her devious manoeuvrings openly, publicly and humiliatingly. That would have made for a massive cathartic pleasure! iv) I get the sneaking suspicion that given Shek's iconic status and clout in the movie industry, he perhaps had a hand in reviewing and reshaping the script, to present, in the larger reality of life and insidious-manipulative schemings of human nature, a more nebulous, unpredictable and intriguing side to his screen persona here. A subtle shift away from his long-established evil character roles in his lifelong oeuvre. After all, life's challenges are not laid out always in purely black/white terms, more likely intruded insistently by grey dilemmas and predicaments. A good characterisation case study for film-studies and acting class novices,yah? v) The "Lei Ma" (domestic maid) hired by Leng after she fired the previous old faithful servant - she's quite a piece of work ain't she? Odious form the start as manipulated/ brainwashed by Leng, she's a surprisingly first rate talent here, despite her clearly minor supporting role. In fact I would venture so far to say it's Oscar-worthy for the Best Supporting Actress statuette - helped majorly if her screen time was extended. Kudos to her, and yes, Leng too. vi) Lastly, that parting scene at the Luei household when Dr Wong and his (betrayed) wife left, she exiting with him meekly - well, in my book I would have had her railing, ranting and remonstrating at him bitterly, threatening divorce etc as her voice fades away out of frame - and into viewers' vivid recall years afterwards. All in all a hugely disappointing anti-climactic end to Leng's domineering wickedness. Sorry, just had to get that witch-bitch off my chest. Thanks.
