He's the boss. I am sure he has seen his share of compressors and he just knew. If it was off camera maybe something like "you dumbo's are going be chasing your tail and spending time and parts on that thing forever, just get a new one".
Three generations of Larson's hashing out air compressor woes,, Solid Gold guy's, listen to grandpa,,, farm life.. Thank You Chet for your dedication, content and Brody... 👍🚜👍,, 🏝🏝🏝🏝
Best farming content channel on all of RUclips. All the banter and explanations of how things work, plus Dougo. Thanks for all the content even through winter 👍🏻👍🏻
With lower horsepower machines like they would use 5 hp +/- they can start/ stop often. VFD frequency drive machines can start and stop as often as needed with a bit of off delay programmed in.
Just replaced a Piston pump to a Screw Compressor for a friend's company and they say it the best think the have done so quiet and more economy. It was cheaper to replace it that to repair the pump and motor.
Only problem with screw compressors is they need to run all the time or it builds up moisture and destroys it. Piston style are better for intermittent use.
@@Sicktrickintuner Exactly - for their use, they do not want a screw type as it doesn't need to run that much. An industrial 2-stage 5 or 7.5HP twin-cylinder compressor made by Quincy, Champion, or Saylor-Beall. That will give them higher pressure than the single-stage that they have now.
Screw compressor $$$$$, ment for large volume of air and made to run 24 / 7 . Quincy makes a good product, cast iron pump with pressure feed lubrication, you need a larger tank and or your old tank in tandem for volume with the new. Chet don't drink the water!
Purchased new Champion VR5-6 230V, 5hp, 60Gal. 2 stage in 1986. Still going strong @160psi in my auto shop. Buy quality and you ktr. Note: Check the numbers on the start capacitor, and put a spare in stock. 👌
screw type compressors are fantastic. They can handle more cfm and are easy to maintain. Worked in a shop that had one. Its also much quieter and faster to come to pressure. We were able to run 250 psi on it.
Chet, seeing grandpa in the videos my grandpa was born in 1902 and he and grandma farmed until 1971 loved hearing about him and his dad farming in the 20’s went to work in a factory and quit after a few years went back to farming
I hear ya. My gramps, same age 87, calls me a pansy as he grabs a cinder block with each hand. forearms the size of popeye's. "hey gramps why don't we use the tractor" and then the wisdom flows.
Thanks for another great video. It was interesting and enjoyable. Loved seeing grandpa and Dougo and Chet together. Grandpa said he was buying the air compressor. All right. We need more of grandpa on the videos. He is a really neat person. Love him when he said get a new one. Thanks to him. Chet you and jean Marie have a nice time in Mexico. You work hard and deserve a nice vacation trip. Have a nice time. Love that little model tractor just like your big one. Dougo has his eyes on it. Watch out it might disappear. Who ever made it did a super job. Thanks for getting that Chet. Looks just like Larsons planting tractor. You and Brody are really putting the time in on the corn planter. Lots of detail work for sure. Nice work you two. Should be in great shape for spring planting. Once again really enjoyed grandpa Larson being on the video. He said he would get the air compressor so just do it. Very nice man. Enjoy him. Thanks for everything to all of you. Eric must still be sick. Get well soon Eric. All for now. The Iowa Farm Boy.
in 1985 my ship had 3 lpacs.Low pressure air compressors...One ran all the time. One was in standby Incase the first one needed help maintaining ship board air pressure at 250 psi....that's what we called low pressure lol.The third was down for maintenance and we switched them around depending on which one needed maintenance....One day the powers said hey guys we want you to try this experimental screw type air compressor. They installed it and the other 3 never came online. That one very quiet screw type air compressor with much less moving parts basically did all the work of the other 3.At that time I wondered how long it would take for the rest of the world to find out about this genius little idea.Yep they exist.Yep they are more expensive. And yep they even build them in Minnesota. And I highly recommend them even tho I can't afford one lol.
16:13 Dougo: "I've heard something about a screw type compressor?" Pretty close, Mr. Dougo... they're scroll type compressors, kinda like the scroll type superchargers they use on engines. There are several advantages of scroll type compressors vs. piston type; they're worth reading up on a bit. One huge advantage is that they are *A LOT* quieter than piston types. Scroll compressors are very popular in the auto painting industry. They're are quiet and reliable. But they are a bit spendy. One thing definitely worth considering: Get an automatic drain valve on your compressor. They're available at Harbor Freight, and will do a great job of preventing rust on the inside of your tank, which is especially important in humid environments.
@@thadsmith2889 Yup, but scroll type are rapidly gaining ground. Check 'em out, they're really nice. I just bought a new air compressor for my garage, and man... I wanted to invest in a scroll type *so* bad. But the wife had other ideas... something about "filling my shoe closet." I ended up with a piston type. : /
Great video as usual. I love to see all 3 generations at once! If you’re investing in a new compressor, look at a variable speed rotary scroll. We had two at work and boy were they nice compared to the old style reciprocating piston. Much quieter and way more efficient. Enjoy your vacation in Mexico and be safe.
There's proof again, boys never grow up. Even Dougo gets a smile on his face from a toy tractor. 😂 If you need a good shop compressor call Kaeser, they've got a thing for everything. 😁
Chet keep it GREEN get a SULLAIR screw compressor the same brand that your portable is. Very dependable! They are American made and made in the mid west.
The model is awesome. Someone built an exact replica model of one of Tony’s trucks & trailer. Probably the highest compliment you can get. We love our farmers!
Been around Deere planters for 45 years. Just a couple tidbits: the original front fold planter had a very clean look with all hydraulic lines inside the hitch & frame tubes. Secondly, it’s impossible to count the number of gauge wheels designs sold over the years; even more closing wheel configurations. And nice new toy, Chet!
Boy that air compressor clip makes me miss my grandpa or as I called him “Pa” grownup on a 150 headed beef farm we had plenty of those conversations I sure do miss the old guy
I have to say I am surprised you don't have mudsmith guage wheels. They are a lifesaver in wet conditions. Everything looks great looking forward to planting videos All the best to you.
I wanna see that John Deere snowblower on the pallet rack put to work. That ratchet style Milwaukee is a great tool. Use it all the time on 1890 air drill
Dougo a small rotary screw compressor ( basically a supercharger that is oil cooled ) will produce around 90 to 125 CFM at 175 PSI continuous duty and they come with a built in air dryer so the air is clean no moisture we have one in our shop you cant hear it run the only maintenance they need is a oil and air filter change twice a year the only problem is the cost but it is well worth the expense when you factor in the long life span and the tool savings using clean air
Now that was cool with your Grandpa and father!!!! 😎
Worth the extra minutes of videoing. Thank you.
Good to hear Merlin say buy a new one. He’s the boss 😅
He's the boss. I am sure he has seen his share of compressors and he just knew. If it was off camera maybe something like "you dumbo's are going be chasing your tail and spending time and parts on that thing forever, just get a new one".
Grandpa is always right.
... respect the advise of elders ... they done that ...
Nice to see Merlin a bit more - he is great!
Chet - I don't know what you paid for that tractor but the look on Dougo's face when seeing it was priceless. 👍
Dougo wants to take the new tractor home and get some carpet farming done.
Chet, would absolutely love a video of you, Dougo, and Merlin discussing the farm and machinery of the past!

You need to get the planter to go on it. That do make a 24 row, 36 row, 48 and 54 row planter to
Awesome video Chet. When grandpa is buying, get the biggest and best there is. 😮
Enjoy the trip. 🚜🚜🚜 🙄🫣🤔🤪
Three generations right there that is cool.
Three generations! Is there anything better 🇺🇸
That is the coolest thing i've seen Three generations need more videos of that
Love the 1/64th tractor now you need the planter to match. Also like Grandpa's idea of compressor upgrade.
For air compressors, if you want a piston type go with Quincy. And if you want a screw type go with Kaiser.
Recommended a 325 with oil filter 5 hp . Best their is will be there 30 years easy !
Screw compressors don’t like to stop and start. Intermittent is better for that as screws like to run 100% or nothing
With lower horsepower machines like they would use 5 hp +/- they can start/ stop often. VFD frequency drive machines can start and stop as often as needed with a bit of off delay programmed in.
@@thadsmith2889 no they cant...... the build up of moisture is what kills them, run all the time or none.... more start stop, less vane life you get.
Very nice to see all three together,, very nice ,,
That’s great your grandpa comes out to the to check on you guys. Have a great vacation
Screw compressors are quiet & very efficient. Also very expensive. They can be rebuilt & are as good as new. I've seen 20+ year old ones.
I’ve worked on some 45+ y/o screw compressors, they don’t make like those beasts anymore.
Just replaced a Piston pump to a Screw Compressor for a friend's company and they say it the best think the have done so quiet and more economy. It was cheaper to replace it that to repair the pump and motor.

Rotary screw compressors are awesome. Most can run a 100% duty cycle at 150 psi. They are expensive like $5k+ for small commercial ones 5hp or greater
More grandpa #1.
Your new gal seems like she is awesome. Beautiful too. You deserve it. Hopefully she'll be in more vids.
Have a good trip!
screw type compressors cost more but are cheaper to run in the longterm as they are more energy efficient and quieter!
Eastwood makes super quiet scroll compresser. 12.5cfm at 90psi. 100% duty cycle.
Brother has one in his shop, hardly know its running.
Nice seeing all three of you together

Screw type compressor is good for long consistent air pressure. We use one for running multiple air tools in a stone fab shop
