I'd be curious to hear you talk about the end of a dogs life. Best practices, identifying issues in the later years, and the choice to put a dog down. We recently said goodbye to our Dogo Argentino/Mastiff cross who made it to almost 10. He was a hell of a dog. RIP Oakley
Good video. Not only a good environment for the animals to train but also for his own kids. Charlotte looked like she was happy to be a part of it all. Much better environment than one where kids just play video games.
My female lab mix Penelope(Penny) was/is like that. I adopted her from a shelter when she was 5-6months old. She knew nothing except crate training, very fearful, low confidence, highly reactive, high prey drive and intense focus that was hard to brake(still is with some thing). I was able to get her to a point in training, but she still was fear aggressive with strangers and highly leash reactive. When she was about 8-9months I was able to find a trainer close by(thankfully) that did a 3 week board and train with her. Penny is now almost 2yrs old and we are still working on her reactivity around strangers but the progress she has made is incredibly. The time I have put in with her training from start to now is paying off. Don’t give up just because it takes time and is hard. The end results are very rewarding!
Favorite part of video: right at the end when that cute little bearded on came up next to the big scary Pit-Mix, and sat down, ears perked up in the expectation that something interesting is gonna happen!
It takes a village for a fearful dog! I have a 11 month old heeler rescue we got at 7 month’s. She wasn’t socialized & I got lucky to find the perfect trainer. On top of that I am doing behavioral modification with her. She isn’t aggressive, just barky fearful on leash. Off leash just fine. Sometimes I wonder if it’s her “fear” period. I may have missed a video but I would love to see what you think about “adolescent fear stage. Is it real thing? But Stonnie is right that it work & you have to stay on it. Also I plead for folks to keep this a happy place 😅there’s a ton of places online to go be mean.

My courses last approximately one year. The in kennel portion is really just about socialization and basic education. Real life is where the important learning takes place.
How would you handle a American bulldog being aggressive toward your dog through a chain link fence? It’s causing fearful behavior from my lab. Any time I try to distract the lab he ignores because he is like a deer in headlights. And it doesn’t help that he wants to play with the other dog that was his “best friend” a German shepherd that is usually with the American bulldog. The American bulldog is a recent addition by our neighbor’s.
My dog is great with other dogs. I am just afraid that the other dog’s repeated behavior is going to cause my dog to have trust issues with other dogs. My lab is submissive and until this has had a “broken fear gauge” he thought everyone/thing in the world wants to be his friend.
Now I am completely defeated/lost. Yesterday evening AB charged my lab from 100+ ft. My lab responded self defense because he went from squeaky barking at his German Shepherd friend to having an AB in his face snapping, snarling lunging etc. I got my dog back they got their dog back. My dog was terrified. This morning AB came to our front gate on our property. My lab went to meet his German Shepherd friend. We had the same thing happen. Difference this time no owner for the other dog in sight. I pull my lab behind me so he stops (and he did completely cause he is a submissive type) I stood tall and told AB in a firm voice to go home. AB then changes focus from my dog to me and begins aggressive behavior to me. I then begin raising my voice repeating “go home”. Other owner comes out and begins yelling at me that I need to stop yelling at my dog acting like I am the problem! I need a “What would Stonnie do?!” I can’t force the other owner to train or control their dog. And she made it 100% clear she did not appreciate me defending myself and my dog on my property… even though all I did was raise my voice. Even though it didn’t back the other dog down it got her out side to get her dog off my property. I am terrified this repeated exposure to a completely unstable dog is going to drive my dog to be completely fearful. Even though up to this point he loves playing with everyone!
Because of this dog we dropped 14k on a fence. Today we spent another 400$ on privacy fabric. We are desperate to know what a dog trainer/expert would do. I worked too hard to create a loving lab that was good with children, dogs and all different shapes and sizes colors etc of people. To see him so scared and lash out makes me feel like a failure as his guardian
Stonnie, could you show the actual method you use when introducing such a dog to a child, to children ? Do you have any video clips of your early work with Charlie ?
What vest are you using to carry your gear? Have a 15 week old lab been using your videos to help train her and I’m getting too much gear to just carry. Thanks
Hey Stonnie, why don't you ever have Beagles on your channel?!?! I just got a lab puppy to go with my two year old Beagle. They make a great pair but my Beagle is feeling left out watching all these labs LOL.

No, of course not. All in kennel training does is reduce the labor required on the dog owner’s part. Sometimes though, the amount of labor required to get moving in the right direction is simply outside the abilities of the owner, for a variety of reasons. Keep in mind that the maintenance aspects of the program have to fit into the owner’s lifestyle or it’s all a waste of time and money. Paying for a dog that minds for a professional trainer, at a professional training facility, is of little value if it doesn’t translate to real life.
Thank You! We are *starting* to consider adding a shelter dog to our family this fall. Right now we are ensuring our current dog (lab) has consistant and stellar manners to help teach the rules of the house instead of picking up any less than desirable ones from a mew member.

"There is a huge amount of variation of behavior within every dog breed"- the journal of science according to a widespread study with a hypothesis of breed correlating to specific behaviors. So making any broad statement about dog breeds and association to tendencies is unfair. Including - but not limited to - your insinuation about pitties.

The whole point of concentrating genes (developing a dog breed) is to guarantee certain physical and behavioral characteristics. The variation within a breed is less than variation across breeds. It’s okay to be an advocate, but don’t let advocacy get in the way of objectivity.

I love pitbulls, we have a rescue case. Deaf dog. But lol I would rather get bitten by my Malinois than our rescue Pitbull cross :)
