- We left Pom City under the cloak of midnight, the clock striking 12:00 AM as we ventured into the unknown. The world was silent, save for the hum of our engine and the faint whisper of the wind. As we raced along the Magi Highway, daybreak greeted us like an old friend, its pale light bleeding through a drizzly, gray morning. The highway, slick with rain, was a battleground of progress and decay-global company were upgrading the road, but nature had other plans. Potholes, born overnight from the wrath of a heavy downpour, lurked like traps, waiting to test our resolve. Yet, we pressed on, our mission clear: to witness the grand opening of the Community Development Centre on Mailu Island.
The journey was a test of endurance. We pushed as far as Kupiano, then onward to Kapari, where the sea whispered promises of Mailu Island. But the final stretch was a nightmare-a narrow access road that descended into chaos. It was a road only in name, more a scar upon the earth. Craters yawned wide like rivers, and sinkholes threatened to swallow us whole. Locals, like sentinels, stood watch along the edges, their voices cutting through the tension as they guided vehicles-especially the beleaguered PMVs-on where to place each tire. It was a dance with disaster, every inch a gamble.
This was no road for the faint-hearted. It was a path forged for beasts of burden, for machines built to conquer the impossible. And there, amidst the chaos, the legend of the Toyota Land Cruiser-10 seater-rose like a hymn. They say it’s built for PNG’s rugged soul, that no matter how merciless the terrain, a Land Cruiser will carve a path through the madness. And as we navigated that treacherous descent, the truth of those words echoed in every rev of the engine, every tire gripping the edge of disaster. This was PNG, raw and untamed, and we were at its mercy.
