Soap Making Fats/Acids (Lauric, Myristic and Oleic) - A Mühle shave 💦

- Do you know that soap making oils are often labelled as acids. I'm quite interesting in what goes into shaving soaps and how different fatty acids, used to make shaving soap, affect the lather. In this Mühle shave, I'll talk about Palm Kernel Oil, and it's component fatty acids: lauric acid, myristic acid and oleic acid which are used in the Mühle Aloe Vera shaving soap.
I found it to be a very moisturising soap, post shave.

Super informative as normal. Mühle have just opened a store in Carnaby Street just up the road from were I work, Beautiful with all the hardware laid out in a very minimalist style.

I too had a bad reaction with TOBS. My face felt like I had sunburn and it looked very red as well. That was my first and last use of TOBS. After that I decided to move to Artisan soaps, and I found Wickham, I use this primarily now and don't have any issues with that, outstanding soap.
Hello mate. Thank you, I hope you had a good Christmas too. Yes, that TOBS seems to get a lot of people. Wickham's soaps are really good; I think they are my favourite U.K. artisan, mostly because I really like most of their scents. I'm loving their Ninfeo di Egeria.
Friendship Shaving Nifeo Di Egeria is one fragrance I’ll have to try. Tried so far, Club Cola, Parma Violet, Classic 24, Irish Fern. Out of the ones I mentioned, I would be hard pushed to pick a favourite, but if I had to, I would say the Classic 24 is my favourite. Smells amazing.

Hi Mark. Nice video as always. Noticed that a few people are complaining about TOBS shaving soaps ingredients. And they are absolutely right. TOBS use in their soaps a lot of highly allergenic stuff like : thiazolinones, eugenol, coumarin, cinnamal, etc. See EWG site for more info about this. Rgds.

Great shave my friend! I am really considering trying a sythetic brush, mainly for when I travel... These Mühle brushes look really nice indeed! Great info on soap ingredients! I would also love to make my own soap! Love tea tree, I make my own beard oils and tea tree is key ingredient for me as well!
Hi André, I'm sorry I took a little while to reply. You should definitely try making your own soap. I think it would be quite enjoyable to use something you made yourself. Of course, you might end up with hundreds of soap bars around the house 🙂 It sounds like you're well on your way if you're already making beard oils.

Wonderful video. I am always suspicious of tea tree oil. It's actually a nerve agent and that's why it is used as an insect repellent. It is sufficiently strong to scramble a bug's nervous system.
That's really interesting. I didn't know it was used as insect repellent, to be honest. It works great on any infection though 🙂

Thanks Mark. Anything containing coal (the element) can burn and thus be used for energy. Palm kernel shells are a good fuel.

Welcome new year, Mark. Myself thought the R106 different head than R89, as to me imo shaves differently, but yr alw detailed research surely is right. My R106 with amber colour handle is superb. Ntd yr soap comments, we all can learn of. Singapore greetings.

One last, Mark, if y use Proraso green frequently, ask yr vendor for 400mL bottles, they sell abt 40% cheaper per mL. Seems time to cut cost.

Great shave and may I wish you a happy new year! Paul H s a fan of Muhle soaps, the lather tends to be a little fragile in the build but is very protective nonetheless. I hear you regarding TOBS. I was blaming my Fatboy when I first started wet shaving with TOBS Sandalwood thinking it was razor burn. After using it with a few other razors, the penny dropped and found it was TOBS Sandalwood that was frying my flesh (Their sandalwood seems to be a usual suspect in their range for reactions).
I tend to give it a wide berth these days. A tend to go with a simple ingredients list these days and have much better shaves. I find Prorazo to be quite innocuous and a great shave (Proraso 'Blue' in particular) as well so I find myself reaching for their creams and soaps a fair bit (even though I have a massive storage bin full of other soaps LOL
Good day, Mark and a happy new year to you too. As you saw, it was my first time using Mühle soap but I shall look out for Paul's videos when he is using Mühle. Do you know, you're not the only one who blamed his razor when using TOBS. It's a soap that many people have a bad reaction to. Perhaps we should start a class action lawsuit; has anyone got Erin Brockovich's number? 😃 I just bought some Prorasso White balm. I'm not sure about the scent. It's strange - I can't describe it better than that. Great on the skin though.
Great shave. Very informative. I have around 30 different soaps, from maybe 10 companies, and have yet to have any reaction, thank goodness. I just received my first TOBS and can;t wait to try it. It's the Platinum Collection shave cream.

@@FriendshipShaving I'll be shaving with the TOBS tomorrow, I'll let you know my opinion. I also love Cella, it reminds me of the original Jurgens hand/body lotion. I find myself sometimes opening up the Cella to just take a sniff........YUP, I'm officially a wet shaving addict!

@@FriendshipShaving Well, shaved tonight and used the TOBS Platinum. WOW! It lathered up wonderfully, had good slickness and great post shave feeling. I'm not good at recognizing/describing scents, but here goes: To me it's woodsy, earthy: a little mucky with a touch of sweetness. The best I can described it is like a Very High End, Luxury Sandalwood like you've never smelled before. It definitely will stay in my rotation. What are your favorite TOBS . Hi Mark, great video. Update: After my first contact with you regarding the TOBS burning reaction, I did not shave for 3 days to rest the face. I hen shaved with a mild razor ( new wilkinson sword DE razor) with a Astra Stainless blade, Palmolive Stick which i found smooth. The face was still scared from rash and sore. However, the results were good and i finished with Thyers Witch Hazel and Poraso sensative shaving balm. I have to say I did review the ingredient listed on TOBS and I agree with you that the acids differ to those found in other soaps. I would suggest introducing witch hazel into ykur daily shave. It will work wonders on your rash to the neck area. It has with me. All the best. Chris
I'm glad to read that everything is settling down for you. That's horrendous, that you still had a rash and were sore three days later! I can't use witch hazel, Chris. It really irritates me and causes me to have folliculitis. I think I got Thayer's and had a terrible time, no pain or irritation just lots of red spots. One day it dawned on me what it was and as soon as I stopped it all cleared up. Mind you, Nivea balm has witch hazel in it and I'm fine with it. Weird.
@@FriendshipShaving I may abstain from the witch hazel too. I still have red spots on my cheek areas. That maybe due to the witch hazel. Really intrested to hear that you may make your own soap. Would love to know the results and if it helps your skin. If it does, I may need to buy some from you.
Let me know if it is the witch hazel. 👍 I previously bought tea tree, lavender and neem oil soap from eBay. It really helped! When I have a bit of a flare up, which doesn't happen often, I try to shave with lavender soap. I suppose you could put a drop of tea tree oil in your rinse water - I've just thought of that.🙂

Thanks for your research into soaps! Soap making does require lots of skill, especially shaving soap. I have tried artisan soaps from vendors who are both experienced and novice and it's quite easy to see how experienced soap makers produce better shave soap. Your smart to start with hand soaps since they are much easier to master. I hope to one day try a shaving soap from you!
Good day, Mark. There really is a difference between soap made by experienced soap makers and those that are novices. I guess the old adage is true: practice makes perfect. I want to make a soap, that's good for your skin - maybe I could call it lemon aid 🙂
Mark, Alumn blocks y may contact Bullgoose, they sometimes offer US$1 (one) broken pucks in plastic container. Upon receipt they look normal, sometime little edges broken off. Exceptional deal, 'if' they're available, you'll hv to grab quick. Achim+
Hi Achim. I got one from Connaught Shaving, with a bottle of aftershave. The alum was £3.50, which I think is a good price. It's a really good sized bar. £16 for alum! I couldn't believe it when I saw that. One dollar from from Bullgoose is a good deal.
You're absolutely right, some vendors rip y off. Bullgoose 'broken' alum (no damage at all) only fm time to time, I guess transport insurance cases... By the way, do y hv any idea, why some use washers btw handle n razor head?
I think the nylon washer is used to protect the finish on the underside of the guard plate. My Feather WSD1 has a black finish on the guard plate; where the handle has been screwed and unscrewed it has taken off the finish, which means if I want to sell it on, I'll get a bit less.
Tks Mark, I think that might be treason for washer. One day yr feather is vintage, some wearing improves value...

Happy New Year! I always learn some new shaving facts from you videos. I'm lucky I've not had a bad reaction to any soaps and I like TOBs grapefruit - but I'll pay a bit more attention to the ingredients from now on.

Do you know what would influence the lubricating properties of the soap, is there any trade off verses skin irritation?
Hello there 🙂 I've always understood that bentonite or kaolin cosy are usually used as a lubricants. I believe it forms a 'slip'. As an aside, I think they use slip in the oil industry, to lubricate the drill. I don't think there is any trade off vs skin irritation. Perhaps a more experienced soap maker might join in with some further info. As I said, I'm not a soap maker, just interested 🙂
I can't use TOBS because of "that certain ingredient" they use. I get a horrendous reaction with hives, burning, itching for days if I use it.
I think that certain ingredient is sulphuric acid 😃👍 Horrible stuff.
It's the Triethanolamine in it that a lot react to. Look it up and you'll know why.
I've looked it up before, Jill. It really isn't very nice. If TOBS made soap, rather than cream and cut out all those ingredients that cause people issues, they'd probably double their sales. There is some discussion that TOBS and a few other London soap sellers, have the same manufacturer. I think TOBS have the same pots as Truefitt and Hill.
Hello Mark. Hope you had a good Christmas and best wishes for a Happy New Year! My Dad would have enjoyed this video. He's a retired industrial chemist. I'm sure he'd understand all of the acids and ingredients you mentioned much more than I did. I haven't had any allergic reactions to shaving soaps up till now. Hopefully I never will. I was horrified when you described a posh alum block costing £16.00. My very cheap alum block is about the size of a matchbox and I only paid £2.00 last year on eBay with free delivery!

Hello Mark, I have commented on your video regarding TOBS soaps, but I wanted to say something regarding Muhle soaps, especially after seeing you use the Aloe Vera. I mentioned being burned by the Sea Buckthorn soap, and when I compare the ingredients in the two soaps, I realize that Hexyl Cinnamal is not a listed ingredient in the Aloe Vera soap. It is very likely then that this chemical substance was responsible for the really bad skin reaction I suffered, which is unfortunate because I really liked the scent, but I do not want to take a chance to be burned again, got too many other "safe" soaps to use. Hi Roberto, I'm sorry I took a little while to reply to your comment. It seems that even mentioning TOBS is enough to get everyone telling their tales of woe. I'm surprised that so many people have an adverse reaction to their soap. What surprises me more, is that TOBS must be aware of it but continue to make the same soap.

Man the soap really dissipates fast doesn't it Mark? I think my Palmolive has that oil in it right ? I am surprised at what you mention about coconut oil because my skin has never been better or more moisturized since I have been using coconut oil as a pre-shave. I have done this now for about 3 months Mark so I think that is a fair test . One more point I do agree that if you even do an against the grain pass it is better for the last pass ~! Kit
I didn''t think it dissipated that badly, Kit. Spreading coconut oil on your skin will be moisturising but the lauric acid in the coconut oil when it chemically reacts with the lye, during the soap making process, produces a drying soap, if you use large quantities of coconut oil in your soap. That's how I understand it, as I said I'm not a soap maker - yet. Cheers.
That makes since when I use coconut oil on my skin there is no Lye in it ~! Yes I did notice that soap did get better as you lathered it up a while too ~! Kit
