His Brightest Star Was You is a beautiful track from Two Steps From Hell's 2016 album "Vanquish". There's a very sad story behind this one. Two Steps From Hell composer Nick Phoenix's 15 year old son was tragically struck down by a driver in a stolen car in 2015. "His Brightest Star Was You" is a phrase referring to Jack Phoenix. I cannot imagine how painful this would have been for Nick Phoenix, his family and friends, and Jack's. So I understand this track to be a tribute from Thomas Bergersen.
I can only hope that I did the track justice on piano. I wasn't able to keep my composure in a video outro so I opted for text instead, which I think is better for this. I hope that you enjoy the track.
Full disclosure: I use some editing magic to make these videos as I don't have time to learn them thoroughly like I would for a concert performance!

Weird thing about this track, I simply downloaded it, and I felt something was up with it. Two Steps rarely makes something so melancholic, sad, nostalgic, evocative AND love evoking. Comparing this to something like Miracles album, or older works like Remember Me and Promise (such a masterpiece this one) the song Itself spoke of love and loss. I had to read the youtube comment section of the composition to find out what happened to Jack. Weird how I felt that just by listening to it, music is truly magnificent.
EDIT: I didn't realise I accidentally referenced another older work from TSFH until after I finished the comment XD
I realised this as well; the whole album felt distinctly different. Then I read that Phoenix' son died and figured that some tracks must be tributes to him and the family's tragic loss. It's such a beautiful way of showing respect - to everyone involved - and creating a work of art that is simply the most honest, faithful and devoted way of expressing one's condolences. Bergersen's one hell of a composer, and this will always be one of my favourites written by him.

AkairuFuyuNoAme I noticed it too, if you look at Sun for example there's a clear style floating around with the notes (see how vaguely similar Two Hearts and New Life sound at times, almost as if they're meant to be understood and felt together), but Vanquish is a lot more varied. It's not just Epic (See Legend or Battlecry), or powerful (Power of Darkness), memorable (Skyworld), exotic (Amaria) or experimental (notice how the pieces had particular names like in Nero) it's a bit of everything, and I love it. Fitting, as it must have been quite a mixture of these feelings for Nick to be a father and then just lose Jack to some moron in a car accident, if I'm not mistaken.

This piece has always made me cry, but knowing the story behind it brings more tears. In my opinion, it takes a LOT of courage to put so much emotion into a piece. Thank you for making this an amazing thing to listen to!

This world doesn’t deserve Nick. In the interview he says he wants the criminal to come to justice, but he doesn’t seek revenge. They dedicated Vanquish to Jack, and still continue to make music. If there is anyone who truly does have an Ironheart, it is them.
