I'm a Hungarian and actually, I go to Croatia (Vir) from Budapest on Saturday and miss the race, unfortunately. But it's quite funny that you and I do the exact opposite😂
I recommend you a nice Mexican restaurant called gringos amigos its open and about 5 minutes away by feet from the hotel where you stay
You were in the EU citizens, the one to your right was all passports. Maybe that's why they freaked out and sent you to the naughty step.

Wow it's so nice to see my country (Croatia) represented in a positive light! Can't really go wrong with Dubrovnik but through a lens of a professional photographer even my own hometown (Zagreb) feels a bit more elegant and new :) How did you like the highway? I remember going from Zagreb to Dubrovnik before the highway and it was an experience
Now you can make sure your shorts have sharp creases at the race this weekend. Both hotels look very comfortable and much larger than most European rooms I've stayed in. Evidently they are aware of your VIP status, it must be that new Daytona.

If you go on the old road (there are next to main highway ) it is shorter and slower but you are not getting charged and you can see a lot of smaller towns and some ruins. Croatian life hack
I drove to the Hungarian F1 race in 1988. When we arrived at the border with our Opel we had to park and go inside to show our VISAs etc as it was still officially communist. The parking lot was filled with Ferarris (I actually think it was part of the team as we saw them all parked at the hotel in Budapest later) , several Lambos, a bunch of Mercs... boy we looked poor. LOL. We were kids. Drove from Siena to Budapest. what a gorgeous drive. I'm glad you enjoyed Dubrovnik. I believe my extended family still have their summer house there.

I had an apartment just around the corner in Budapest for a couple of years, fantastic city.
I've been in Dubrovnik. I stayed with my family in the old city and it was just amazing. Honestly the best place I've been to. That place is super cool.
Man those are some great hotels, they look nice.
And that road trip is quite something. What a view. Lots of mountains, cliffs, and tunnels.
I lost count of the tunnels.. lol at first I thought it was the same clip in a loop 🤣

Zagreb is pretty quiet this time of year since everyone is going on vacations. Its amazing to be here now with almost no people and almost no traffic.
In case of using dash cams: check the local laws. Here in Germany it’s suuuuper weird and partly illegal (because of privacy laws). If you use a dash cam and in that case it’s against the law you could have the greatest evidence in the world that you’re in the right-court wouldn’t accept the footage at all
Do you mind sharing the cost of hotel nights?
I'd say this is far from what i would call a tense moment. Go to the scummy districts of liverpool or manchester, let alone london, and you'll experience what tension is. He might have been in the wrong lane, but let's not forget that he did bother pronouncing Budapest right.
What to do when the other person is on the wrong and walks away with a 10sec penalty and 25 points
Don’t use a dash cam in Austria or Portugal. It’s illegal, and in Austria especially the fine is very high.

With 2 passport photos in my car due to your advice, I went traveling in the Sipe White Mountains of Arizona and unfortunately lost my wallet by using it to hold my camera to shoot elk drinking from a reservoir. It was reassuring to have those photo, but fortunately they were not needed.
I will make certain all people in my party are insured and have passport photos when we go international post pandemic!
It's a shame you must stay in such "dumps" on your travels.... and force your wife to endure the squalor! Y'all have a great weekend.

A fellow Ozzie , originally from Hungary we Have done this drive many times with the family . They did the same to us at the border each time .
Attended the race in 2019 . Fantastic memories and Croatia is just amazing all round .

Hey Kym - what do you figure that you've had to pay in tolls, so far this season? I was only once driving in France. We only went maybe 50 kms and the bloody toll was something like $20 CDN! I couldn't believe it! I don't recall ever paying tolls here in Canada, except maybe the odd bridge or something like that.
When you travel in Greece, every 5-15 km there is one toll station but it's 2,50-3,80 euros😂😐

Yes, because Croatia/Serbia/Romania/Ukraine->Hungary is a Schengen-border, if you are in, you are free to cross to other countries inside Schengen-area (if no corona restrictions)
My favourite Budapest hotel is the Corinthian Royal. It looks very similar style to the one you are staying at. Last time I was there the Ferrari and Red Bull teams were there for the GP. Red Bull guys were all very personable and would have a chat, as far for the Ferrari guys - less said the better.

They range from free to a lot. And I had to get some Australian documents witnessed.

Ha ha. I drove trucks and hospitality vehicles for the F1 paddock in 90, 94 & 95. We used to have some classic border times, and experiences with local police. The Hungarian into Austrian border was my toughest crossing, one year.

Always have a dashcam on if or when you're involved in a crash and the other driver is on the wrong as evidence, but if you're wrong, you know what to do... Lol, I can tell you that bit.

I remember that exact border crossing, I was on a TopDeck tour in 2015, and it took close to 2 hours to get through the Hungarian border, it was only hairy because half of the bus really needed the toilet.

Too late now but on the way to Split, a day out doing walks around Plitvice Lake would have been a way to break up the journey

I'm not sure how it is now, but when I was in Budapest a few years ago it was in the midst of gentrification. You could literally find houses with bullet holes still in them from the 50s a block away from a brand new shopping mall.

Budapest is always full of traffic jams, so renovations have nothing to do with it :)
