Due to some confusion in the comment section, I would like to clarify the many different versions of Once Upon a Time in America which have been released over the years: 1. The infamous 139 min. American theatrical cut. It fortunately does not seem to be in circulation anymore besides some rare to find VHS copies. 2. The 229 min. European theatrical cut. This is the most widely available cut today and is the main version you receive when you rent on Prime, Vudu, or watch on Netflix. 3. The 251 min. Extended Director's Cut which was restored in 2012 and is available in 4K. The trailer above is for this version. 4. The 269 min. Cannes "original" cut. It received a standing ovation in 1984. Since then, 19 minutes of footage have dissapeared due to copyright issues, and this cut is no longer available. 5. Sergio Leone's original 6 hour cut that he wanted to release as two separate movies. Never publicly screened, and most likely long gone, never to be screened again.
@@Mr.Goodkat I wonder that myself. For example, theres a guy who owns a rare copy of an English dub of Federico Fellini's 8 1/2 right here on RUclips who could make it available to the public right now if he wanted to but he's just sitting on it (ruclips.net/video/GcdyCMOoRsM/видео.html). These lost copies tend to be locked behind selfish copyright owners I'm afraid.
Don't get me wrong both Godfather Part 1 & 2 are top notch films, both films deserve it flowers but OUATIA is on a whole another level of greatness, the way Sergio Leone captured the essence of troubled neighbourhood kids who grew up to become fearless, merciless, cold hearted gangsters is nothing short of mesmerizing. This film does not glorify the life of crime, it's showing you the true weight that life carries, from violence, unlawful, deranged and sadistic way of women being treated as objects by these men, the betrayal, the tragedy, the love, regrets and etc all captured really well by Leone and the actors, the score by Ennio Morricone is easily my favourite score out of all the films I have seen so far, this movie moves you deeply and keeps you captivated even with it's 4 hour runtime (depends on the version) but the 4 hour version is the definitive version to watch. This film shows you the life of 4 friends who end up taking the wrong path and by the end each one of them paid it their own way, no glorification just a solid look into the world that you should avoid at all cost and make you look at your life and your past and present. It's more than just an epic crime film, in a way it's a film that lets you have a conversation with yourself. There is many ways to express the way this film makes you feel, but they do not make movies like this anymore. Sergio Leone will always be one of the best to ever do it, just because he created this Masterpiece of a film. Also, R.I.P to James Hayden who portrayed Patsy in the film, unfortunately he overdosed on Heroin shortly after this film, he could have become a great actor.
Adam, you have done a masterful job conducting a trailer for this film. I myself have tried making a trailer for this film, but I can’t do it due to my genuine love for this film. You have perfectly done justice to my favorite film, you should do more trailers, your skills are very promising. :)
Seeing it Today with my mum who introduced me to the movie at a young age, it a film that speaks to you on so many Levels. Today, finally, I am seeing a 255-minute version (Extended Director's Cut version) in all its glory, excited to say the least. If you get the chance to see it on the big screen, I would recommend it, especially if you have never seen the movie before as well.
I ordered the special edition, but I'm going to sell that copy and order the extended director's cut. I want my first viewing of the film to be as close to Sergio Leone's vision as possible. Who knows, maybe it will top Goodfellas as the greatest gangster movie I've ever seen. Hopefully this isn't the last time I order it.
@@AdamMetwally I watched it a few days ago. It was amazing albeit kind of disturbing. Good thing I ordered the four hour cut because the first copy I bought never showed up.
Is this the proper version on this movie? I know there have been problems with restoration and all that which is really sad I absolutely love this movie.
This extended cut is 251 minutes. It is not the "proper version" but it is the closest available version we will get to Sergio Leone's original cut (remember, he wanted Once Upon a time in America to be 6 hours long and released in two parts)
@@Heb.2000 the version that received a standing ovation at Cannes in 1984 is the 269 minute cut (4h29min), which is no longer available anywhere today. The Extended Director's cut is 251 minutes (4h11min) and was shown at Cannes in 2012. They are not the same. 19 minutes were cut due to copyright issues.
I've seen repeatedly people discussing this movie invoke the idea that Sergio Leone is a director who is misogynistic and treats his femal characters poorly. I think it is because of this reason that Sergio Leone hasn't gotten the recognition for his masterpiece Once Upon a Time in America as other directors like Coppola (Godfather) and Scorsese (Goodfellas)
No, wrong. The reason for that OUATIA has not got the recognition is because it was brutally cut down with hours of screen-time by the producers for the american release. Not just that, the film (again, in the american release) was put into chronological order which made the film not make sense. The discussion that you are talking about is quite silly, since his movies ironically were a CRITIQUE on the usual Western-movies who treated women as ”symbols” instead of actual people. Have a great day, not trying to be rude or anything, but just wanted to explain your errors
@@Hnchmchl85 No, not really. I just explained why the movie has not got the recognition. The film, that was seen in its original form (the good version) in European countries got praised and got a 15 minutes standing ovation at the Cannes festival.

ruclips.net/video/_APmVdXm4Xw/видео.html at 59:25 in "Suite from Once Upon A Time In America." Unfortunately its not a real music track but a short composition made specifically for the film
This movie treats rape as no big deal. One rape victim seems to have enjoyed the experience while the other was just a bit inconvenienced. The rapist is fairly nonchalant about it all.
Hi Unappreciated Treehouse, you're right that the rapist is nonchalant about his actions. Even the driver ignores Deborah's screams of pain and keeps driving until its way too late. Why does he wait so long to stop the car? I dont know. Maybe its a comment about how the Mafia were tolerated during the prohibition era and that's why they got away with so much nasty stuff? I dont know, but I want to try to defend the film: I dont think Leone made this movie to dismiss rape incidents. I think he is interested in portraying gunslingers as not romantic, and interested in offering insight on how criminals try to justify sexual violence. Two pieces of reasoning make me come to this conclusion: A) - Carol is heavily implied to have some masochistic tendencies. She's not a self-respecting woman like Deborah, and during the robbery she actively demands Noodles to hit her and "make it look real". There's a thrill to it for her. On the other hand, you have Deborah, who has completely rejected Noodles by the time of the dinner date. She's got aspirations to succeed and to make a good name for herself in America. She wants the American dream, and that means not getting involved with Noodles because he is a petty criminal who was sentenced to jail for 10 years. When Noodles rapes Deborah, she never forgives him and tries to enact revenge on him by fucking his best friend Max and giving birth to a son. Despite the incident which she hasnt forgotten, Deborah still manages to succeed in life. In the end she's won and has the career she wanted, meanwhile Noodles is some nobody smoking opium in some Chinese den. B)- All of Noodles' sexual experiences at this point have amounted to sex with Peggy for money and sex with Carol by force. But he always wanted Deborah. So Noodles having failed to buy sex with her by extravagantly spending money on a lavish dinner date for her, does the only other thing that has worked for him up to this point. He uses force. You then realize where Sergio Leone has taken you. The first rape explains the second. This is how a criminal has to justify his evil actions. Once Upon a Time in America is kind of like the bookend to the classic American gangster movies. We dont get anymore Godfathers, Bonnie and Clydes, or Untouchables after it. That naive cheeseball romanticism dies out of Hollywood and from then on its super cynical and Scorsese-like with bloodbaths and massacres.
@@AdamMetwally The portrayal of rape in this film as delightful for Carol or just a slight bother for Deborah is so far from plausible that it's beyond any rationalization you may offer. A) The 1930s were not a pretty time for women or for gender rights B) Sex workers have historically suffered a high incidence of sexual assault C) Carol's character is a masochistic prostitute, and she's directly the one who suggests the bank theft D) Of those who report their rape, around 5% also describe experiencing sexual arousal or pleasure Suspense of disbelief is not shared to the same degree in everyone, but can you see why some might have no trouble believing the events that take place in the film?
