These days when you finally do get a reply, they want to do a telephone interview, which I find very frustrating. I believe an interview should always be done in person so that they can see me, and not just a voice over the phone. Also, many of these online applications have you take a test, even if it doesn't pertain to the actual job.

I turned 56 this year and lost my job with a company I'd been with for 18 years: paid vacation, full medical benefits, all went bye-bye. So hard to start all over from scratch, especially at this age. I can't retire until I'm 67, so I have to do something for income.
Oh..it's definitely real all right. I was at a job for 28.5 years and they shut down the plant (they were working towards laying me off anyway..kept getting low reviews and new young prick boss and I couldn't see eye to eye..on ANYTHING). When my severance ran out (which was quite good, thank God) and I started looking (I was only 54.5 years old), those interviews DID not come as fast as they used to. My son happened to be looking at the same time - he was 22. He received triple the amount of interviews I did. Happily, I am at a new job...not quite making as much as before (about 6 grand off)..BUT, it's very close to home (only 15 minutes drive and benefits are better...and I have a great boss...NOW). I found out part of the reason they hired me - all the YOUNG people would leave after 1.5 years. The big boss finally said , "Hire some OLD people...at least THEY'LL STAY.". So I"ve been there for 1.5 years...and I can see why young people do leave. The job is NOT easy, it's complex as hell, and somewhat stressful - although not AS stressful as my old job. Young people don't want to put up with this kind of thing from what I see. I"m going to try and hang on until I"m 62 or so.
Went back to school and graduated with honors 8 years ago at 53. When I was able to secure an interview it was because the interviewer thought I was in my 20's due to my graduation date. When I would meet the interviewer they looked at me like I was from Mars. It also shows how inept some of these recruiters are. I also took menial jobs in hope of moving up but when a position opened up I would be ignored and a young person just out of college would be hired. It is so sad and frustrating because I am unable to earn a decent living and will never be able to own a home again.

I'm in the same position now. I went on a couple of interviews recently and it showed on their faces how disgusted they were with me. I was like WOW! I should start wearing a hidden camera to interviews.
I commend you for getting your degree later in life. I know what you have stated here from a different angle. Every application I complete asks my college graduation date. By being honest and typing June 1988 I get filtered out of consideration.
Don't give up...I worked somewhere for 20 years and resigned...Took a long vacation jumped back in line for a new job and got one 5 days after applying..It has weekends of and paid holidays..Its never over until u say so.
My coworker who is in his sixties did get a job in technology after six months. I was just laid off. The problem is I had to get jobs with outdated skills after COVID in technology. This is just so hard. .NET doesn't have any certifications on it's own, which it did at one time. I'm going to try to get certified in Azure. Getting laid off is just depressing.
🙁 I no longer have a social network at age 61, having spent the last six years caring for elderly parents. So many of my friends have passed away and I had no time to make new.
I am right there with you Marie!!! I was going to a community collage to change my career in the dental field because I have carpal tunnel and can't be a dental lab technician anymore after 26 years. I got into a physical therapy assistant program and half way through I had to take a hiatus because my 80 yo mom was ill and ended up living with me for the next 4 years. Right after she moved in with me my dad got cancer. Needles to say, I gave up my life to take care of my parents ....no regrets!!! I was told that because my hiatus from education was too long that I would have to start the program all over again. Being ~50 + yo, I seriously didn't have it in me, mainly because I had no support system OR NETWORK from family. My mom's side in Germany and my dad's side in the South, I'm in Washington. Also, you can really find out who your real friends are when you are going through tough times and really need help. I did almost everything by myself, including setting up my dad's funeral, picking his casket ect. then my mom's funeral later. I have mass experience managing my parents life and estate. I'm just trying to figure out how to incorporate all of my knowledge into my resume. The problem is that now I am 60 yo woman and wonder, will a potential employer consider my self taught knowledge, my age, & the huge gap in my resume....while I was thrown into the fire pit??? I seriously had to figure strategies out on the fly while my own life was not exactly secure.....by myself!!! This included conferring with real estate, and other attorney's, my dad's rentals, being my parents advocates for everything from doctors, hospitalization, SNF's, Adult family homes, and a million other things over the years. It would take too long to list. Some of my friends passed away and about 12 others friendships, of 20 to 30 years, moved out of the state so I really have lacked a good network. All of these things are time consuming and stressful so trying to find new networks is tough, especially when Covid started and my confidence went right out the window. I barely got to see my mom before she passed because of Covid. I'm curious....what did you end up doing Marie, or anyone else in a similar situation??? My question to anyone else is how do I create a resume that will get me a job at age 60??? I have other attributes that I can add that are also self taught. I seriously need help now!! Please! How do you recommend getting references when you 1) haven't worked in a very long time or 2) aren't very outgoing and not in clubs or activities outside the home? Not everyone has a huge network of friends. I've found a lot of people are unwilling to help you find a job or vouch for you. Isn't it time to get rid of this "reference" requirement? Former coworkers and employers often have a no reference policy. It seems like everyone is afraid of being sued these days. Any thoughts?
If you have a computer, you have the ability to create networks. Go to meetups, go to church, find local facebook groups, whatever. You have to get out of the house and meet/talk to people. Join toastmasters and learn to sell. Even if you hate it, push your comfort level. Become a great speaker and learning to sell yourself and ideas to others will greatly set you apart. My unsolicited advice.

Patriotic heroes like Karl Marx DID have a way. He and his followers fought for a more organized way, acknowledging the nonconsent of the born: being forced into the world against their will. We owe Marx & his followers for their hardship & sacrifice fighting for us to get paid at all. And, no - I do NOT agree with any of Marx's unfalsifiable assertions about history. But I agree with his goals.
I've been laid off a few times. As I get older it gets worse. I've done contract jobs, or I just create my own job. I get interviews but they see I am older and lose interest. My best advice is to create a side income, and apply to many jobs, this way you have a better chance. Use any and all methods, referrals, etc. I have never had to network. I just call agents, and search several sites each day. Get good reviews on your linked in acct. Adjust your resume, and check job sites daily. Don't give up and stay positive. Keep tech skills up to date and gain new ones. Use the free learning sites to improve your skills.
Re invention is good. Many start 2nd careers. Just because someone is older doesn't mean they don't want to work or have a decent job. It is possible, but it takes work. In my state, CT, there is limited jobs because a few of the larger employers left.
Now way!! Try this! 1st cry your heart out because you lost something & are suppose too. 2nd Find your 'Life's Compass.' The compass should contain all your good & not so good history with your interests, talents, skills, education, etcetera. Might take a while but is worth it since all that was leading somewhere into your future. 3rd Clearly define your career now from the compass & add a spin to it like a skill you can do well. 4th Locate a company, say, of your choosing & list 10 things you can do for them. 5th Go to that company & talk about you! Why this way? Usually the company has no real procedure in place, verbal or written. Don't talk about any handicaps yet until the interview & bring that up first. Usually the company people have plenty of their own life glasses, anti-intellectualism. You might not agree but it's there trust me. It is there big time. Much good luck.
As a 62 year old job seeker,here is my advice to those my age: retire and get social security.The employers nowadays do not want older workers. Sad,but true.
I actually got a job where my co-workers were mostly over 50. BUT... I couldn't keep up with their insane daily quota, so I lost the job after 2 years. Ironically, it's been said they prefer "quality over quantity", but that wasn't true.
I'm a 60+ year old health professional(not a physician) about to give up my private practice, but unable to retire. I did all aspects of running a small business. Is there hope for finding a corporate job or any other thinking type job? I have noticed that all the sales reps that sell product to my profession are never older than 45, so I have ruled out that possibility. I am current in my thinking as well as computer skills. I am amazed that there are minimal resources devoted to this subject on the internet, and most web sites list jobs that are minimum wage clerk positions or walmart greeter type jobs.
Steve! Heck yes! I realize it's tougher (that's why I shot this video for you!), but you can do it. I get dozens of emails every day from people in their 50's and 60's who have landed jobs. They've pointed to my videos helping. For many of them, they pointed to the "value proposition" being their missing piece. They weren't previously showing their unique value. I'm sure that as a 60+ year old pro, you have experiences that most in their 40's do not. Use some of the tactics in this video (and my others on ageism) get those interviews so you can highlight that!
I recall an interview that got me a job. Interviewer says " I see here you did poorly in math.........my response " Albert Einstein flunked Algebra" within two days I got calls from the department head, within a week the Director.....I was hired.
How sad that I’m 51, grew up in the 80s - the birth of technology and grew up watching computers evolve, etc but I’m now considered an “older worker. “ I have so much talent but because I was tossed aside so that my former employer could pay someone less for my job, I’m out of work. This is so wrong. I have applied everywhere and no one calls. I’ve got 10 different versions of my resume and all dates have been removed that could possibly “date” me. I’ve been referred by friends and have been rejected. I look to be in my early 40s. This is turning out to be a very sad period in my life that I hope ends soon. Employers don’t want to take calls or even talk to you anymore.
Hello Karen, may I ask what kind of job you searching for, what major do you have and if you recommend me to major in something like CS or go do something like pharmacy where I can get a steady payment etc... I am scared to face such issues, scared of being 40+ and can barley adapt to the technology and so on... May you please respond to me if you see this.. Did everyone get work yet? I am just starting to look and I’m in my 50’s. Getting separated from my wife with 2 young children 2&7. Was a stay at home dad for the past 8 years.
Go to those places. How they call? City or county Community Service in the Education and Job Dept. And tell your situation to the Case Manager. Also write to the legislation people ask them if they can hire you because you are being discriminated somewhere else. Test the water, embarrass them. Tell them that you are trying to be productive in the society, but you are not allowed.
Hi I am 53 trying to get a new job it’s not easy. I lost my good office co. Job years ago. I am applying to retail. They end up hiring younger candidates. I am applying to the wrong places. I tried Amazon warehouse job however it’s too far from where I live. I don’t want to commute too far for one job. Great advice. Maybe I can try employment agency.
Thank you for the valuable tips. Unfortunately ageism is alive and well in today's job market. However, jobseekers, regardless of their age, must always remember that they are their own respective CEO with respect to their career. What do you suggest when you apply for a job, do reaserch on the company, get to the interview early, dress professionally ask and answer questions and have a good interaction with interviewer yet they tell you that they won't offer you the position. Yet hire someone older and seems to have less experience. Also, how would you prepare for group interviews.
I'm not really there yet, but I do understand. Oftentimes I'm interviewed by a 12 year old and I feel I have to be so much smarter and more energetic to make up for being older than the interviewer. This video gives some good reminders for anyone any age!
Cecilia, I'm not really there yet, either; like you, I understand. That's funny (what you said)! I've had coworkers half my age (superiors in the corporate workplace) literally tell me to "use their buzz words" and "speak in their lingo" in order to advance in said job roles, as I would then "better fit into the culture there." I wanted to say "Whaaaatt?? You're like.. about the same age as my son. What the...?" lol.. But I just gritted my teeth, smiled back, and thanked them for their input :)
Online applications require dates on job experience and school graduation entries. If we skip everything over 20 years, let's say, it won't pass the degree requirements.

Maybe you don't have a life compass? Waiting & looking on the street corner will not help. Staying home & binging your time on the comfort things like cable, favorite foods, video games.will eat up lots & lots of time. Get your compass!
Increase your skill sets so they cant say no to you, or start your own business. You dont want to work in that environment anyway if theyre concerned more about your age than your ability. You have a computer, the possibilities are endless. STEP ONE: Go get a job, any job, and work your 9-5. Come home, eat your dinner, kiss your wife, pet the dog, whatever it is you do. STEP TWO: Make a list of skills that you need for the job/career/business you WANT. STEP THREE: From 7pm-2am work on those skills. Master them. Shut off your TV, your facebook, and everything and everyone else stealing your time! When youre 40, 50, 60+, youre at the half-time point in the game. Make the second haf better than the first, but you gotta hustle to do it.
I am 52 Trying to get back into sales since kids are now adults 5:13 I was a successful sales rep prior to raising kiddos I sold print ads Yellow Pages and an Auto Magazine..😢 Twenty years of at home work How do I not say I am old while using an outdated sales job :(
I appreciate your time in making this video and making it available to senior job seekers. Helpful tips. While I do understand that entrepreneurship is not for everyone, I wish more seniors use their skills to build small businesses and create employment to young people rather than compete with those young people to keep their heads just above water. I feel saddened when I see a 70 plus year old working in Walmart (I would guess they do not have enough savings to sustain till EOL) rather than pushing weights in the gym or enjoying retirement.
Where to find jobs now? What online resources. Especially if your looking outside of your field; but not the "service jobs" level like retail sales nor scrubbing jobs. Maybe using some skills a different way, type jobs. Face it, some places like pharma, will not be hiring a person 60, back again. Drive is good, but seeking places and identifying new opportunities..... A video on that also would be helpful.
Has anyone here, young or old. ever applied to a big company and gotten a response without any inside connections? I have never gotten a response from a Fortune 500 company, only smaller ones with under 100 employees. The largest company to ever call me had about 1000 employees and they were local to my city.

The first basic screening is done by entry level employees, often teen age girls as a part time job. Make no mistake, she will not call anyone over 30 for an interview. This has been the reality for 50 years.
I'm in my 50s and it's been hard looking for work if I have any indication that they think I don't have any energy I'll jog in place while answering the questions or sometimes I do jumping jacks I'm working my way up to burpees haven't found a job yet.

Hi Margaret Ann! Regarding the updated terminology, I meant whatever the most current terms are for your specific domain/industry/ position/processes and so forth. That will be specific for each individual.
What if you don't have a network? Sadly, online part of the screening process includes having to state your age. What about mothers returning to work when their children are grown?

An encouraging, understanding, yet realistic "tell it how it is" way of relaying the info was perfect for the more senior age groups in the workforce. Seasoned, "vet" workers connect with that directness, that "Give it to me straight, bottom-line it for me?" approach (my opinion); sometimes more so than their younger counterparts. But for this particular audience, one just needs to simply read over the comments to know that this video "connects." I'm NOT getting the few thumbs-down on this video (as to why)? This is practical truth that just may help encourage and equip many older but highly valuable professionals to STAY on top of their game and REGAIN or RE-ESTABLISH their competitiveness in the job market! One of those "calm" types? In a job interview? Well, I am 64 and was laid off two weeks ago. So I am pretty scared at this point about ageism. However, this is excellent advice overall and I will try to make some changes in my resume. Still, I think it may be an uphill battle to land a good full time job. We older employees seem to get pushed toward very low-paying jobs.... I'd love to hear others' experiences in the job search trenches as an older candidate.
Hi Andrew l been enrolling on many online courses, because l like learning new skills and technology. However l still could not get wall to wall employment. One occasion l was beaten to a job by a person who hadn't had the same levels of qualifications (degrees/Masters) as myself but is 20 years younger. I was told by an insider that the new post holder "can develop new skills/qualifications in due course" lts not fair!

Another time there was a job that l over 10 years of experience a Laboratory Technician earlier in my career but it paid rather well. However l was turned down for the role and the feedback l received was "..it was a backward step in my career". ( possibly a gentler way of saying l am over qualified?).

my master and PhD are recent but my undergrad shows my age. Should I remove my under grad or the date of my BSc graduation from my resume? I also have lots of Gaps due to having kids and moving from city to city for my husband job and education. I feel so discouraged :**(
Hi Andy - Great info, but I didn't quite understand your comment about Jobscan.co "knowing" what kind of keyword software the prospective employer is using? How can it do this? Surely not just from the job advert alone? Also, as I'm currently experiencing this "unspoken" bias myself at the moment, I just wondered how recruiters and employers actually justify this prejudice? Forget the fact that it's actually illegal, (certainly here in the U.K - not sure about the U.S.) why do they actively discriminate against older workers when every study shows that more mature employees are harder working, more knowledgeable (and will pass their skills on!) and efficient, take less time off, and are generally going to give an employer "more bang for their buck". I can understand why this might be the case for overtly physical jobs (even then why not just test applicant fitness?) but I've never actually seen an employer explain why age bias exists in managerial or executive roles? Smiley, great question. The jobscan tool can evaluate the URL of the job description (you capture this and put it in like the demonstration I did here: ruclips.net/video/jxtCWsurrSE/видео.html. You can see that the tool can see the specific ATS tool and provide insight back to you on that particular tool's preferences. This can seen with your eyes if you notice the URL format of the job description. The magic is that jobscan has the intel to give you. Regarding the age bias question, it baffles me too.
And if you've been discriminated against, file a complain with the board of labor anonymously. It's against the law. When companies start paying BIG fines for discriminating, they will stop.

Im 55, cant afford certificates! Been unemployed for 2.5 years. I left off graduation date for a while. It looks like i either forgot to include it or to hide my age.
I live in the U.K. and here you don't have to put your age on your resume. Also, even though it doesn't stop companies from doing it, it is actually against the law to discriminate on age.
@@andylacivita You can craft your CV accordingly so that the employer can not tell how old you are. I do not have dates by my university, or school education. Also even in the job interview these days it is very rare that an employer will ask you for your age
Another strategy that I might look at if I was unemployed at 50+ years of age is temporary contracting. It is much easier to get in the door this way and it can even lead to something more permanent
I am lucky at the moment because I have a good job working in Cyber and Information Security for a big corporation, but I am getting older myself now so I always think about what would happen if I was made redundant. Cyber Sec is a very in demand field though and I have been told that if I get the Certs I should be able to find work even if I was in my 60s. I am currently studying for a Cyber Security cert called CISSP. For anyone else looking for a career move into this field this is a good cert to study for.

I'm terrified because my former career was taken from me and I'm 60 years old trying to start over in a new profession...with ageism. It's terrifying. No other words for it. On my resume, I have to post my education which means I need to post dates I recieved them, which dates me immediately. Do you have recommendations for this situation?
Elizabeth. So sorry to hear about your situation. On your question related to ageism, you can simply take the dates off your resume and on your resume site the last 15 to 20 years of work experience. I think thats the reason im not getting hired. They've asked for my birthdate at the beginning of the interview. I've removed the date I graduated and jobs I've had that are older than 15 years in my resume. Hopefully I will get a job after 6 months of searching.

I’ve learned to get rid of my first few jobs just out of college off my resume and same for graduation date which are some of the ways companies track age and discriminate. The other thing in the interview process is don’t talk about the “good ole days” during the interview. Keep it current. Finally, be flexible on WHERE you’re willing to work and WHAT you’re willing to do. I realized many years ago that i will not be making as much money or have the same level of seniority in my 60’s, but I’m ok with that.
Tech is different for each employer. My first employer was cutting edge however they have world class scientist and senior system engineers. Since then I have worked for many. I can tell you one was less than what I knew in middle school in fact it was really old tech before IBM 2600 or Commodore 64. The other one was manual databases and they purchase their tech. Plus their manual or lack of is so embarrassing as an user/owner some of software's instructions manual that I purchase in the late 1980s were much more advance than their guide and/or systems.

58 years old and so desperate for a job I am ready to do desperate things. Worked all my life, the American dream is a nightmare.

I turned 56 this year and lost my job with a company I'd been with for 18 years: paid vacation, full medical benefits, all went bye-bye. So hard to start all over from scratch, especially at this age. I can't retire until I'm 67, so I have to do something for income.

Oh..it's definitely real all right. I was at a job for 28.5 years and they shut down the plant (they were working towards laying me off anyway..kept getting low reviews and new young prick boss and I couldn't see eye to eye..on ANYTHING). When my severance ran out (which was quite good, thank God) and I started looking (I was only 54.5 years old), those interviews DID not come as fast as they used to. My son happened to be looking at the same time - he was 22. He received triple the amount of interviews I did. Happily, I am at a new job...not quite making as much as before (about 6 grand off)..BUT, it's very close to home (only 15 minutes drive and benefits are better...and I have a great boss...NOW). I found out part of the reason they hired me - all the YOUNG people would leave after 1.5 years. The big boss finally said , "Hire some OLD people...at least THEY'LL STAY.". So I"ve been there for 1.5 years...and I can see why young people do leave. The job is NOT easy, it's complex as hell, and somewhat stressful - although not AS stressful as my old job. Young people don't want to put up with this kind of thing from what I see. I"m going to try and hang on until I"m 62 or so.
Went back to school and graduated with honors 8 years ago at 53. When I was able to secure an interview it was because the interviewer thought I was in my 20's due to my graduation date. When I would meet the interviewer they looked at me like I was from Mars. It also shows how inept some of these recruiters are. I also took menial jobs in hope of moving up but when a position opened up I would be ignored and a young person just out of college would be hired. It is so sad and frustrating because I am unable to earn a decent living and will never be able to own a home again.

I'm in the same position now. I went on a couple of interviews recently and it showed on their faces how disgusted they were with me. I was like WOW! I should start wearing a hidden camera to interviews.

I commend you for getting your degree later in life. I know what you have stated here from a different angle. Every application I complete asks my college graduation date. By being honest and typing June 1988 I get filtered out of consideration.
This woman I know retired at 67, and at 69 got hired at Walmart.
Don't give up...I worked somewhere for 20 years and resigned...Took a long vacation jumped back in line for a new job and got one 5 days after applying..It has weekends of and paid holidays..Its never over until u say so.

My coworker who is in his sixties did get a job in technology after six months. I was just laid off. The problem is I had to get jobs with outdated skills after COVID in technology. This is just so hard. .NET doesn't have any certifications on it's own, which it did at one time. I'm going to try to get certified in Azure. Getting laid off is just depressing.

🙁 I no longer have a social network at age 61, having spent the last six years caring for elderly parents. So many of my friends have passed away and I had no time to make new.
I am right there with you Marie!!! I was going to a community collage to change my career in the dental field because I have carpal tunnel and can't be a dental lab technician anymore after 26 years. I got into a physical therapy assistant program and half way through I had to take a hiatus because my 80 yo mom was ill and ended up living with me for the next 4 years. Right after she moved in with me my dad got cancer. Needles to say, I gave up my life to take care of my parents ....no regrets!!! I was told that because my hiatus from education was too long that I would have to start the program all over again. Being ~50 + yo, I seriously didn't have it in me, mainly because I had no support system OR NETWORK from family. My mom's side in Germany and my dad's side in the South, I'm in Washington. Also, you can really find out who your real friends are when you are going through tough times and really need help.
I did almost everything by myself, including setting up my dad's funeral, picking his casket ect. then my mom's funeral later. I have mass experience managing my parents life and estate. I'm just trying to figure out how to incorporate all of my knowledge into my resume. The problem is that now I am 60 yo woman and wonder, will a potential employer consider my self taught knowledge, my age, & the huge gap in my resume....while I was thrown into the fire pit??? I seriously had to figure strategies out on the fly while my own life was not exactly secure.....by myself!!! This included conferring with real estate, and other attorney's, my dad's rentals, being my parents advocates for everything from doctors, hospitalization, SNF's, Adult family homes, and a million other things over the years. It would take too long to list.
Some of my friends passed away and about 12 others friendships, of 20 to 30 years, moved out of the state so I really have lacked a good network. All of these things are time consuming and stressful so trying to find new networks is tough, especially when Covid started and my confidence went right out the window. I barely got to see my mom before she passed because of Covid.
I'm curious....what did you end up doing Marie, or anyone else in a similar situation???
My question to anyone else is how do I create a resume that will get me a job at age 60??? I have other attributes that I can add that are also self taught. I seriously need help now!! Please! Any advice will be appreciated !! Thank you, and good luck to everyone in a dilemma!!
How do you recommend getting references when you 1) haven't worked in a very long time or 2) aren't very outgoing and not in clubs or activities outside the home? Not everyone has a huge network of friends. I've found a lot of people are unwilling to help you find a job or vouch for you. Isn't it time to get rid of this "reference" requirement? Former coworkers and employers often have a no reference policy. It seems like everyone is afraid of being sued these days. Any thoughts?
I'm in the same boat as you, no network or references.
If you have a computer, you have the ability to create networks. Go to meetups, go to church, find local facebook groups, whatever. You have to get out of the house and meet/talk to people. Join toastmasters and learn to sell. Even if you hate it, push your comfort level. Become a great speaker and learning to sell yourself and ideas to others will greatly set you apart. My unsolicited advice.
Invent them, get a friend to pretend he's the chairman of some made up company

I've been laid off a few times. As I get older it gets worse. I've done contract jobs, or I just create my own job. I get interviews but they see I am older and lose interest. My best advice is to create a side income, and apply to many jobs, this way you have a better chance. Use any and all methods, referrals, etc. I have never had to network. I just call agents, and search several sites each day. Get good reviews on your linked in acct. Adjust your resume, and check job sites daily. Don't give up and stay positive. Keep tech skills up to date and gain new ones. Use the free learning sites to improve your skills.

Re invention is good. Many start 2nd careers. Just because someone is older doesn't mean they don't want to work or have a decent job. It is possible, but it takes work. In my state, CT, there is limited jobs because a few of the larger employers left.
I am an abled service connected veteran over 50 with a service dog with a great skill set...but the BIAS is REAL!
Now way!! Try this! 1st cry your heart out because you lost something & are suppose too. 2nd Find your 'Life's Compass.' The compass should contain all your good & not so good history with your interests, talents, skills, education, etcetera. Might take a while but is worth it since all that was leading somewhere into your future. 3rd Clearly define your career now from the compass & add a spin to it like a skill you can do well. 4th Locate a company, say, of your choosing & list 10 things you can do for them. 5th Go to that company & talk about you! Why this way? Usually the company has no real procedure in place, verbal or written. Don't talk about any handicaps yet until the interview & bring that up first. Usually the company people have plenty of their own life glasses, anti-intellectualism. You might not agree but it's there trust me. It is there big time. Much good luck.

I actually got a job where my co-workers were mostly over 50. BUT... I couldn't keep up with their insane daily quota, so I lost the job after 2 years. Ironically, it's been said they prefer "quality over quantity", but that wasn't true.

I'm a 60+ year old health professional(not a physician) about to give up my private practice, but unable to retire. I did all aspects of running a small business. Is there hope for finding a corporate job or any other thinking type job? I have noticed that all the sales reps that sell product to my profession are never older than 45, so I have ruled out that possibility. I am current in my thinking as well as computer skills. I am amazed that there are minimal resources devoted to this subject on the internet, and most web sites list jobs that are minimum wage clerk positions or walmart greeter type jobs.
Steve! Heck yes! I realize it's tougher (that's why I shot this video for you!), but you can do it. I get dozens of emails every day from people in their 50's and 60's who have landed jobs. They've pointed to my videos helping. For many of them, they pointed to the "value proposition" being their missing piece. They weren't previously showing their unique value. I'm sure that as a 60+ year old pro, you have experiences that most in their 40's do not. Use some of the tactics in this video (and my others on ageism) get those interviews so you can highlight that!
I recall an interview that got me a job. Interviewer says " I see here you did poorly in math.........my response " Albert Einstein flunked Algebra" within two days I got calls from the department head, within a week the Director.....I was hired.
That is so true! It's important for interviewers to realize that 50 is like 35 was, years ago!

How sad that I’m 51, grew up in the 80s - the birth of technology and grew up watching computers evolve, etc but I’m now considered an “older worker. “ I have so much talent but because I was tossed aside so that my former employer could pay someone less for my job, I’m out of work. This is so wrong. I have applied everywhere and no one calls. I’ve got 10 different versions of my resume and all dates have been removed that could possibly “date” me. I’ve been referred by friends and have been rejected. I look to be in my early 40s. This is turning out to be a very sad period in my life that I hope ends soon. Employers don’t want to take calls or even talk to you anymore.
Hello Karen, may I ask what kind of job you searching for, what major do you have and if you recommend me to major in something like CS or go do something like pharmacy where I can get a steady payment etc... I am scared to face such issues, scared of being 40+ and can barley adapt to the technology and so on... May you please respond to me if you see this..

Did everyone get work yet? I am just starting to look and I’m in my 50’s. Getting separated from my wife with 2 young children 2&7. Was a stay at home dad for the past 8 years.
Go to those places. How they call? City or county Community Service in the Education and Job Dept. And tell your situation to the Case Manager. Also write to the legislation people ask them if they can hire you because you are being discriminated somewhere else. Test the water, embarrass them. Tell them that you are trying to be productive in the society, but you are not allowed.
Hi I am 53 trying to get a new job it’s not easy. I lost my good office co. Job years ago. I am applying to retail. They end up hiring younger candidates. I am applying to the wrong places. I tried Amazon warehouse job however it’s too far from where I live. I don’t want to commute too far for one job. Great advice. Maybe I can try employment agency.

What do you suggest when you apply for a job, do reaserch on the company, get to the interview early, dress professionally ask and answer questions and have a good interaction with interviewer yet they tell you that they won't offer you the position. Yet hire someone older and seems to have less experience. Also, how would you prepare for group interviews.
I'm not really there yet, but I do understand. Oftentimes I'm interviewed by a 12 year old and I feel I have to be so much smarter and more energetic to make up for being older than the interviewer.

Cecilia, I'm not really there yet, either; like you, I understand. That's funny (what you said)! I've had coworkers half my age (superiors in the corporate workplace) literally tell me to "use their buzz words" and "speak in their lingo" in order to advance in said job roles, as I would then "better fit into the culture there." I wanted to say "Whaaaatt?? You're like.. about the same age as my son. What the...?" lol.. But I just gritted my teeth, smiled back, and thanked them for their input :)

Increase your skill sets so they cant say no to you, or start your own business. You dont want to work in that environment anyway if theyre concerned more about your age than your ability. You have a computer, the possibilities are endless. STEP ONE: Go get a job, any job, and work your 9-5. Come home, eat your dinner, kiss your wife, pet the dog, whatever it is you do. STEP TWO: Make a list of skills that you need for the job/career/business you WANT. STEP THREE: From 7pm-2am work on those skills. Master them. Shut off your TV, your facebook, and everything and everyone else stealing your time! When youre 40, 50, 60+, youre at the half-time point in the game. Make the second haf better than the first, but you gotta hustle to do it.

While I do understand that entrepreneurship is not for everyone, I wish more seniors use their skills to build small businesses and create employment to young people rather than compete with those young people to keep their heads just above water. I feel saddened when I see a 70 plus year old working in Walmart (I would guess they do not have enough savings to sustain till EOL) rather than pushing weights in the gym or enjoying retirement.

Where to find jobs now? What online resources. Especially if your looking outside of your field; but not the "service jobs" level like retail sales nor scrubbing jobs. Maybe using some skills a different way, type jobs. Face it, some places like pharma, will not be hiring a person 60, back again. Drive is good, but seeking places and identifying new opportunities..... A video on that also would be helpful.

Has anyone here, young or old. ever applied to a big company and gotten a response without any inside connections? I have never gotten a response from a Fortune 500 company, only smaller ones with under 100 employees. The largest company to ever call me had about 1000 employees and they were local to my city.

The first basic screening is done by entry level employees, often teen age girls as a part time job. Make no mistake, she will not call anyone over 30 for an interview. This has been the reality for 50 years.

I'm in my 50s and it's been hard looking for work if I have any indication that they think I don't have any energy I'll jog in place while answering the questions or sometimes I do jumping jacks I'm working my way up to burpees haven't found a job yet.

Hi Margaret Ann! Regarding the updated terminology, I meant whatever the most current terms are for your specific domain/industry/ position/processes and so forth. That will be specific for each individual.
What if you don't have a network? Sadly, online part of the screening process includes having to state your age. What about mothers returning to work when their children are grown?

An encouraging, understanding, yet realistic "tell it how it is" way of relaying the info was perfect for the more senior age groups in the workforce. Seasoned, "vet" workers connect with that directness, that "Give it to me straight, bottom-line it for me?" approach (my opinion); sometimes more so than their younger counterparts. But for this particular audience, one just needs to simply read over the comments to know that this video "connects." I'm NOT getting the few thumbs-down on this video (as to why)? This is practical truth that just may help encourage and equip many older but highly valuable professionals to STAY on top of their game and REGAIN or RE-ESTABLISH their competitiveness in the job market! What's NOT to like about that? :) Please keep the ATS Tips coming as well??? Kudos, Andrew!

One of those "calm" types? In a job interview? Well, I am 64 and was laid off two weeks ago. So I am pretty scared at this point about ageism. However, this is excellent advice overall and I will try to make some changes in my resume. Still, I think it may be an uphill battle to land a good full time job. We older employees seem to get pushed toward very low-paying jobs.... I'd love to hear others' experiences in the job search trenches as an older candidate.

Hi Andrew l been enrolling on many online courses, because l like learning new skills and technology. However l still could not get wall to wall employment. One occasion l was beaten to a job by a person who hadn't had the same levels of qualifications (degrees/Masters) as myself but is 20 years younger. I was told by an insider that the new post holder "can develop new skills/qualifications in due course" lts not fair!
Hang in there my friend. We all know life may not be fair but it tends to reward people who keep at it!!!

Another time there was a job that l over 10 years of experience a Laboratory Technician earlier in my career but it paid rather well. However l was turned down for the role and the feedback l received was "..it was a backward step in my career". ( possibly a gentler way of saying l am over qualified?).

my master and PhD are recent but my undergrad shows my age. Should I remove my under grad or the date of my BSc graduation from my resume? I also have lots of Gaps due to having kids and moving from city to city for my husband job and education. I feel so discouraged :**(
Hi Andy - Great info, but I didn't quite understand your comment about Jobscan.co "knowing" what kind of keyword software the prospective employer is using? How can it do this? Surely not just from the job advert alone?
Also, as I'm currently experiencing this "unspoken" bias myself at the moment, I just wondered how recruiters and employers actually justify this prejudice? Forget the fact that it's actually illegal, (certainly here in the U.K - not sure about the U.S.) why do they actively discriminate against older workers when every study shows that more mature employees are harder working, more knowledgeable (and will pass their skills on!) and efficient, take less time off, and are generally going to give an employer "more bang for their buck". I can understand why this might be the case for overtly physical jobs (even then why not just test applicant fitness?) but I've never actually seen an employer explain why age bias exists in managerial or executive roles? Smiley, great question. The jobscan tool can evaluate the URL of the job description (you capture this and put it in like the demonstration I did here: ruclips.net/video/jxtCWsurrSE/видео.html. You can see that the tool can see the specific ATS tool and provide insight back to you on that particular tool's preferences. This can seen with your eyes if you notice the URL format of the job description. The magic is that jobscan has the intel to give you. Regarding the age bias question, it baffles me too.

Im 55, cant afford certificates! Been unemployed for 2.5 years. I left off graduation date for a while. It looks like i either forgot to include it or to hide my age.

I live in the U.K. and here you don't have to put your age on your resume. Also, even though it doesn't stop companies from doing it, it is actually against the law to discriminate on age.

@@andylacivita You can craft your CV accordingly so that the employer can not tell how old you are. I do not have dates by my university, or school education. Also even in the job interview these days it is very rare that an employer will ask you for your age
Another strategy that I might look at if I was unemployed at 50+ years of age is temporary contracting. It is much easier to get in the door this way and it can even lead to something more permanent
I am lucky at the moment because I have a good job working in Cyber and Information Security for a big corporation, but I am getting older myself now so I always think about what would happen if I was made redundant. Cyber Sec is a very in demand field though and I have been told that if I get the Certs I should be able to find work even if I was in my 60s. I am currently studying for a Cyber Security cert called CISSP. For anyone else looking for a career move into this field this is a good cert to study for.

If it's on the application I would not skip it. Don't overthink it and just answer the questions. Good luck!

Elizabeth. So sorry to hear about your situation. On your question related to ageism, you can simply take the dates off your resume and on your resume site the last 15 to 20 years of work experience. I think thats the reason im not getting hired. They've asked for my birthdate at the beginning of the interview. I've removed the date I graduated and jobs I've had that are older than 15 years in my resume. Hopefully I will get a job after 6 months of searching.

It depends what position you’re interviewing for but if you’re concerned about ageism then trim the number to 20 or something lower.

I’ve learned to get rid of my first few jobs just out of college off my resume and same for graduation date which are some of the ways companies track age and discriminate.
The other thing in the interview process is don’t talk about the “good ole days” during the interview. Keep it current.
Finally, be flexible on WHERE you’re willing to work and WHAT you’re willing to do. I realized many years ago that i will not be making as much money or have the same level of seniority in my 60’s, but I’m ok with that.
Tech is different for each employer. My first employer was cutting edge however they have world class scientist and senior system engineers. Since then I have worked for many. I can tell you one was less than what I knew in middle school in fact it was really old tech before IBM 2600 or Commodore 64. The other one was manual databases and they purchase their tech. Plus their manual or lack of is so embarrassing as an user/owner some of software's instructions manual that I purchase in the late 1980s were much more advance than their guide and/or systems.
