No to a brand new car. Feel the same about most other assets to be honest.

The reason they depreciate so rapidly is they ridiculously expensive to fix and maintain. If you have your own workshop, time and skills... sure take them on. If not, RUN LIKE HELL!

I have bought a luxury low mileage version V8 in immaculate condition + spec. I set by £5k and spent £2.5K so far fixing odds + sods and changing brake + gear box oil. Not an issue if you are prepared. Luxury cars do cost more to run in petrol, insurance and road tax. That this why owners hold onto to them for 2 years on average. Final point - They are delicious to drive but it costs you. Buckle up.

I have a 2016 BMW 750Li with about 89,000 miles. We only drive it on the highway and use a X3 for town driving. So far, it has been the best highway car we have ever had and I have not seen the high maintenance costs that this car supposedly has. BMW has recently made available a deal to do all the oil changes for 3 years for a bit over $200 which seems like a good deal. I plan to keep it for 4 or 5 more years before exchanging it.

Great video. The BMW M760li is an incredible car for the money second hand and definitely the best car here along with the Bentley. An incredible BMW V12 engine that we will sadly never see the likes of again. It makes an incredible noise, goes like stink and with 4WD and rear active steering goes round corners like a hot hatch. Well not quite. And if you get the M Drivers Package they are de-limited which means 190 mph, if you are in a hurry to get to Waitrose. Get one while you can folks, before we are all consigned to driving food mixers.😞

Let's see how you feel when you get a couple of $3--5k maintenance and repair invoices in the first year. There are reasons these amazing cars tank in value.
Often, they end up in the hands of a tech who knows how to work on them. The best way I've found to buy these, IN GENERAL, is to buy them 2 years old, Certified with a nice 2-3 year factory backed warranty. OTOH, I have a neighbor who buys fairly hi mileage MB sedans a few years old, for 10-15k and drives the wheels off them. ABOVE ALL, get the car thoroughly inspected by a qualified technician before buying. Unless of course, you know cars.

The only time I can imagine buying a brand new car, is if that car was likely to appreciate. Perhaps if there's another car with insane hype that's also something I want like the GR Yaris or GR86.
This initially seems like a video where all the cars are still way out of most of our budgets...but clearly that's the point - give it a couple of years and it's a choice between a 760Li and a same-age i20 😄 While I'll slag off current BMW styling all day, they do seem to have higher depreciation than other brands at the moment, at least in their luxury cars (7/8 series), not really sure why. Haven't checked if the 5 series is doing it too.

    I don't think I could buy a new car
I did it with a motorcycle and I likely won't do that again. I'd rather get a second hand well spect vehicle than buy new

I am new to this channel, from most of the comments that I have read, it looks like most of your viewers are from Europe. I live in California, I love the BMW 7 series. I personally have owned a 98 740i, 2007 750i and currently a 2011 750li that I have put over 120,000 miles since ownership. I am currently in the market for a 2017 M760i xdrive (asking 59,000 USD or 2017/2019 Alpina B7 around 63,000). The maintenance on these vehicles in my opinion isnot to bad if you stay on top of it. I have had one major problem with my 2011 750li and that was I had to replace the valve stem gaskets within the engine ($7000.00 USD) Outside of that I love the 7 series BMW! The new 7 series 2023, the exterior is the ugliest design that I have seen outside of the Nissan Juke!! With this new design that BMW is applying, I doubt if I will ever buy another BMW! I look forward to viewing more of your content.

How does the Q8 end up on a list of cars 2-3 times the price ?

The reasons these kinds of car absolutely plummet in value is not solely due to their high maintenance/repair costs.
Whilst this is undoubtedly a factor, a greater influence is because they were so ridiculously (inflatedly)expensive to start off with.
They are most often bought new by whoever, or more likely, whatever corporation or company, as a tax dodge. A huge amount of this perceived depreciation just gets offset against tax. These people or companies actually have no vested interest nor place any value in keeping them long term.
Combine this with the potential running costs and that the Ordinary Joe, on a salary, can’t write-off depreciation against tax and they inevitably become very low value commodities!
Hardly anyone actually wants them….and even fewer have the nerve to actually buy and then maintain one.

I was in an Audi dealership today for scheduled service. Brand new A8 $118,000 a quick search of used 2021 with 15000 miles for $63,000. Wow nearly half off in 3 years. That’s crazy

Big limos have become high-tech masterpieces but also with high maintenance costs when things go wrong! And they go wrong after some time... Then who wants to wait 6 months for delivery time of a new car computer/regulator etc. from China?

Ironically when I see an old Mercedes S W140 or old Jaguar XJ8 in the traffic I'm much more impressed. These new cars are technically amazing but at the same time just as soulless as digital watches.

ALL brand new cars depreciate, however they don't depreciate over time. Your new car starts to depreciate BEFORE you leave the lot. The nanosecond you signed that purchase order. Don't believe me??? Buy a brand new Escalade and then turn around and try to sell it back to the dealership,,, That $15000 dollar hit off the top WON'T TICKLE!!!

A luxury car with the HIGHEST REPAIR BILLS…those maintenance bills will never depreciate. That’s how they make their money. But buying it preowned is the best way to go. I’ll never buy a new car again… Unless it’s a Tesla, which now has the highest resale value even above Lexus
