The betrayal of Bette Davis by her daughter B.D. Hyman

  • One of B.D.s many lies and contradictions:
Hyman initially claimed that she wrote the book 'My Mother's Keeper' in an attempt to get through to her mother. Now a born again Christian, Hyman has said in one of her many 'teaching' videos (all on her RUclips channel): "I figured she would be so outraged that I would write a book, she would go away." In another: ''it achieved it's purpose, it separated her from our lives (her and her husband).'' So she now admits that she wrote the book so that Bette would cut of all ties with her and her family, and not to get this message across to her at all in an attempt for her to understand her better after all.
    Another lie...
She claims that her adopted brother didn't even try to talk her out of writing the first book, but this is completely contradicted by what he has said in this TV documentary about Bette. In her second book, Hyman writes that "he simply said that he hoped I knew what I was doing and, to my assurances that I did, said that he trusted my judgement".

IMO, Bette was a fabulous actress but, also, a malignant narcissist. She grievously wounded *many* people in her lifetime. Remember actors are, by profession, liars. They pretend to be people they are not for a living, and we never really know what they are like in their private lives.

I loved Bette Davis. Even so, I am sure she was hard to take. If BD objected to Bette's destructive behavior then why did she continue to have Bette in her life? Money. In spite of all Bette's flaws she remained financially generous to BD and Jeremy and kept them financially afloat for years. BD and Jeremy complained about Bette but continued to use her like an ATM. When Bette fell ill, BD and Jeremy found themselves in dire financial straits. They defaulted on their mortgage, left their creditors high and dry, and fled the United States. BD seldom mentions this. BD and Jeremy thought Bette would die and the book was a quick, large infusion of cash. The book "My Mother's Keeper" was more unintentionally humorous than shocking. All the readers just sighed and said, "Well, that's Bette Davis being Bette Davis". The book was a terrible thing to do to a mother who was battling cancer and a stroke at the same time. No matter how BD tries to justify it. The book was a low blow and done out of pure greed.

    • @smackamoe

I read the book and her problem with her mother was that Bette Davis had classic narcissistic personality disorder exacerbated by alcoholism. B.D. was allowed to date older men at 13. That is child abuse. Bette stood bye and allowed the step father to abuse B.D. Throughout the book over and over B.D. is abused by her mother mentally and emotionally. There was no way to stop it other than writing the book. It is a well written, articulate and sometimes funny account of a relationship where one person is taking advantage over another using emotional espionage. Bette Davis raised a strong daughter and it backfired on her. Bette's sister wasn't so fortunate.

She said that she wasn't beaten or starved ( i.e. as punishment for not eating a rare steak, like Christina Crawford ). I remember Bette's response to 'Mommie Dearest' and it was a little smug. I suspect BD thought to herself, "Not so fast there..."
I love Bette Davis too. It's difficult _not_ to love Bette Davis - but if she hurt her daughter and saddled her with a few too many issues, then I don't blame BD for writing the book.

Agreed. BD's excuses and reasoning seemed highly un-credible to me.
From the timing for publication (as this clip points out), BD wrote the book expecting it would come out in the aftermath of her mother's anticipated death. Now put that side by side with "writing this book is the only way I have of communicating with my mother, she won't listen" (paraphrasing).

BD looks as tough and strong willed as her mother so if the book was to shake her mother off and cut loose then she didn't need to write this book and live off the talk show spin offs for decades....she'd eventually have got the message to stay away. BD was only 17 when she married...very young indeed. Her mother wasn't ready to let go of the child she loved so dearly. The book has supported her ever since even weaving into her born again ministry about the good verses evil forces. She accused her mother of being a witch or into witchcraft thus stereotyping Bette as the bad guy when she was probably an overbearing, over loving, work obsessed but brilliant artist who had a problem with alcohol. She absolutely adored BD and gave her an interesting, well traveled childhood meeting lots of great people. BD clearly needed Bette's financial support but couldn't cope with the baggage...well , she found a way to achieve this BUT in truth, made a deal with the devil and broke her mothers heart.

This is also what happens when you nonchalantly raise your children. You try to be “friends” with your kids and I think that is precisely what Bette did. Bette appeared very broad-minded and chill on a personal level-I mean able to “shoot the shit”, not haughty, not the stereotype of the imperious diva movie Queen. And with that I’m sure BD grew up fast because her mother set those loose boundaries and also spoiled her to an extent. Which is dangerous too because now you don’t know whether you’re a mother or a friend. And Bette probably tried to hard to be a friend. When it backfired she exercised control and tried to wear the mother hat again and be more authoritative etc. Crawford on the other hand was probably much more strict with Christina but that also backfired as she didn’t try to be a friend one second of one day. But she did with her ‘twins’ (who weren’t really twins) and they loved their mother.

A child who has been caught out lying in that book in many ways. A child who profited from those lies, and then - SHOCK - goes on to preach "their own brand" of Christianity at everyone else. Why am I not surprised.

I've always believed BD over exaggerated many aspects of her relationship with her mother, Bette. That being said, I can also see where Bette could've been exhausting to deal with but loved BD unconditionally. After all, she allowed her to marry at a significantly young age and financed her life even though she didn't approve. Bette created the monster that would eventually destroy her, and that's the real tragedy here.

From the videos I saw of BD explaining it she said that she felt this was the only way she could get through to her mother, which sounds feasible, after all Bette lived her life in the public eye so perhaps this would be an opportunity to get her attention - and who knows what other ways she might have tried privately?
The only mention about it that I've heard from Bette is in this video here, where her only remarks seem very snarky, essentially saying "I've spent a lot of money on my child" - which is what most parents try to do and holy moly shouldn't begrudge if they're as wealthy as she was!

BD Hyman comes across as someone holding on to a lot of anger and resentment towards her mother, Bette Davis. She also seems to be envious of Davis’ career and stardom. I wonder if she had aspirations of being an actress herself? I know she appeared in a very small part in a film (with her mother, though never in a scene together) called ‘Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?’. Her acting imo wasn’t particularly noteworthy, and (as far as I know) never acted in a film again. That might have put the kibosh on any aspirations of hers to follow in her mother’s footsteps. Her reasons for writing her book ‘My Mother’s Keeper’ (to “get through” to Davis) are questionable. She must have known the repercussions that would ensue after its publication; it would inevitably be a best-seller. It might well have been cathartic for her, but it was naturally devastating for her mother. This shows a lack of compassion and a moral compass when it comes to the feelings of others. I’m not saying Davis was the ideal mother, but I think there could have been a better way for BD Hyman to both heal her past and feel understood.
