  • In this third and final (for now) instalment of this three-part series, I chat with two legends, Pete Fraser (Winemaker / General Manager at Yangarra Estate Vineyards) and Steve Pannell (Winemaker / Owner S.C.Pannell) about the longevity and evolution the style of Grenache currently made in McLaren Vale. The opportunity to get these two guys to speak on this topic that they know so well was too good to resist, so I've mic'd them both up, and I'm standing off camera (interjecting every now and again) for a change. All subtitles where necessary... sit back and enjoy. And if you don't have a glass of McLaren Vale Grenache in your hand, hold up, go get one, and come back.

    I recently tasted over 270 red wines from South Australia (to the exclusion of Cabernet, Shiraz and Pinot), with a focus on McLaren Vale Grenache, and what makes it so special. All of the scores and tasting notes are available for subscribers on www.robertpark...

    Any review you see on my socials ( / erinllarkin , this channel and my website (www.erinlarkin...) are never paid for by wineries or anyone else: the wines are featured on their merits - because they have risen to the top in tastings. If you try the wines I recommend and you like them - good! Because so do I.

    So good to see Grenache being treated seriously as a stand-alone variety.Can’t wait to follow its progression.

    Wow 20, 30, 40 years! Amazing to think that a lighter variety like Grenache has the potential to age so long. Thanks for the video Erin.

    Visited Yangarra last week so it was great to come back and watch this video afterwards to learn more about the winemaking. Really keen to try more Grenache now! Fantastic content, thanks Erin.

    Wow what a privilege to be able to hear all of you discuss Grenache currently as well as it’s future! There was some great insight from everyone across all the videos The soils in the first video the Sands effecting ripeness in the second as well as wine style and the wealth of vintage information to the PH discussion in this video was very cool to hear ! I was also shocked to hear how little Grenache was in McLaren Vale as well and it being that expensive….
    Thank you Erin for sharing this with us all loved learning so more about Australian Grenache! I only wish these videos were even longer haha🙏

      There's so much to know about this topic, I barely scratched the surface. Tasting widely will help unveil a number of the little vagaries that we had no choice but to skip over, so I hope you get the opportunity. This is a regional/varietal match that has a very bright future.
      Thanks for watching!

    Mind you, I watched it 3 times to get a handle on the conversation.
    Honestly Erin, watching your work, generally, has added so much depth to my cellar. Really appreciate what you do.

    I really love Grenache. I did a blending session at Penfolds a few years back and was the only person in the room who added nearly 50% Grenache to the GSM blend. (Not sure the Penfolds people agreed with me but that's another story). Really interesting take on what the top producers are trying to do. I have quite a bit of Gigondas, Vacqueras and Rasteau in my cellar (CdP is getting pricey)...and they age really well. I wonder if the McClaren Vale will still hold that spiciness as the guys didn't really talk about that?

    Really fascinating series on grenache. I’m not sure anyone else in the world is taking it as seriously as a single varietal (as opposed to blending partner) as the winemakers in and around McLaren.

    • @erinlarkin
      @erinlarkin  2 года назад +1

      I would say there are some very serious producers in France and Spain, however the collective in McLaren Vale is impressive and important.

    • @davidmontgomery8033
      @davidmontgomery8033 2 года назад +1

      @@erinlarkin I can’t think of very many in France producing pure varietal. In Spain it’s becoming more common, I agree. But still less important than Tempranillo or carinena blends.

    • @erinlarkin
      @erinlarkin  2 года назад +1

      That’s what makes the group in McLaren Vale significant and important. They’re working hard to nail the terroir through the lens of grenache, and the pairing is spot on

      @@erinlarkin yeah, he explained it was a ceramic egg for an oxidative approach… Georgians would argue Qvevri shape is an optimal and better than proportional egg shape though 😄
