Do you know where the major problem lies? It lies with our forefathers 4 to 5 generations back. In those days before Tv was invented when black and white cinema without sound was the latest technology and not widely spread yet. Say about 100 to 130yrs back.
In those days where majority ppl were not educated. During important festive Seasons or yearly family kuladeivam poojais the Father whom is the head of the family would usually conduct poojais at his home. He being the head pusari for the event would instruct his wife and children to arrange all the prayer items, but majority of these fathers would not Explain why should this lamp be placed here, why should a whole bunch of bananas should be placed there and etc, what’s the meaning to all of these. Every item placed for the Poojai has meaning. Nothing is placed or done without a meaning to it. Cause the method or way of these Poojais have been happening for thousands of years. So since if we can acknowledge that thousands of years ago Tamils were intelligent beings at the same time we must also acknowledge that till to this date many of us are still following the same methods of poojais that our forefathers have conducted so nothing is like unnecessary in a poojai unless we think of it that way.
I really wouldn’t know Why these forefathers did not bother to explain or teach but my Guess is, they may have had gigantic ego that didn’t allow them to teach or would have worried thinking that their children were not matured enough to know? Well seriously I wouldn’t know cause we have to visualise that during that era, the daily routine of a majority working Tamil family man, was to wake up very early in the morning, go to work after a very hard day’s work go to the Neighbourhood toddy shop have his toddy create trouble and make love to his Wife at night cause that was the only usual entertainment for him. So that’s why in those days each family had a normal amount of 10 to 15 children.
So fast forward, as time progressed, tv and cinema was made available for everyone. Majority got atleast moderately educated and more westernised. They unknowingly got brainwashed and got influenced by western culture which includes myself too.
So, they started questioning why do we need to do this poojais? Why do we have to place this and that? Since there weren’t enough ppl to educate them on Tamil tradition/culture/religious or it’s importance on these issues, these unknown issues became superstitious to them. Some started looking at other religions coz they couldn’t understand their own. Many started cutting corners and started talking and inventing their own assumptions by assuming that they are highly educated in western cultures and education. They forgot about their ancestors way of life. For example, by placing a full set of bananas one of its reasons, symbolises family as in a whole and to pray to your istha or kuladeivam that as how these bananas are intact our family should always be intact. Nowadays instead of placing a full set of bananas for poojais some ppl place half cut set of bananas not knowing what it really symbolises. A lot of corners have been cut.
So now they talk about thali. Do these so called highly educated ppl really really know the importance of thali?
If you just cut corners just becoz u think it does not suite u to your liking then for thousands of years our ancestors who have been following these sacred customs and traditions are plain stupid? And your highly intelligent?
The sacred Thali should always be respected and upheld. It should not be forsaken becoz you thought so, just becoz you don’t know the value and meaning of it. If you think that it’s a chain to chain women up then let it be your own assumption of stupidity.
In our Tamil history, Tamil women who were married wearing thali have been warriors, queens, leaders etc. If you really want to know about them, then take effort to read books and look thru authentic Tamil history websites. It’s the outside influences that have polluted our Tamil culture & Traditions.
So if you take away everything that has been followed for thousands of years. Then how would you call yourself a Tamil?
When we had kingdoms, the western civilisation were still living in caves. They now are learning and following our medicines, science and traditions which we should be proud of.
But sadly majority think that by conversing in English they are seen as superior. So they teach their children to call them mummy(dead person wrapped in cloth) and daddy (sounds like keddy to me)
So if you really want to know about your Tamil heritage go and do your own proper research by reading books and by visiting authentic websites that explains Tamil history and culture. Do that before you decide to place comments based on half boiled thoughts. Cause this is the real killer of our culture and traditions. I’m not highly learned individual on Tamil culture and traditions but atleast I’m trying and learning in every possible way and I would rather learn then start criticising it.
