  • In this video lecture we begin our journey to explore the power electronic devices. We have explained the diode especially in terms of the static and dynamic characteristics. In this regard, we have explained the reverse recovery characteristics and the conduction and blocking regions of a diode. I have also explained in detail the datasheet of a diode RURG3020CC. Through this datasheet i have explained to calculate the conduction losses and blocking losses. Additionally, the relationship between the maximum allowable power dissipation and the temperature is expounded. It has also been shown that a diode exhibits negative temperature coefficient and that by examining the forward and reverse characteristic plots, the on state and off state resistances can be calculated respectively. The mechanical drawings to design a PCB are also highlighted. To enhance the foundations of power electronics, the connection of diode in series and parallel configuration are also explained. In this lecture, i have also solved an example to showcase that even a slight difference in diode characteristics result in unequal voltage and current sharing among two diodes.
