Can I Heat My House Without Natural Gas? EG4 Solar Heat Pump + Redodo Batteries

  • For the months of October and November I will try not to use any natural gas to heat our house. Depending on temperatures I think its doable! I realize the energy in the redodo mini batteries would be better off going to the EG4 mini split since its more efficient but I want to experiment with with adding heat to other sections of the house instead of all in one area.

I believe my January gas bill was nearly $400 in Central California where it will dip just below freezing at night sometimes. We had a shortage which more than tripled the rate. I have wooden floors and no foundation so my house is poorly insulated at the bottom, so my heating bill will get high in the winter. I purchased a Little buddy and a Big Buddy space heater, an electric blanket, and a CO detector that I move wherever I have a space heater going. I will use the central heat or air for 30 minutes to an hour when it's extremely hot or cold to get the whole house cooled down or warmed up quickly, but mostly use window air conditioners that run off batteries from off-grid solar or the propane space heaters. I will probably add a couple of mini splits eventually. Thanks for the video.

Wow thats pretty high, I have the dewalt version of the buddy heater but only for ice fishing and emergencies. Mini splits are a nice way to go, I have a video calculating the efficiency on this eg4 coming next week.

Great video! If possible, graph November's data, such as inside temp, outside temp, heat pump runtime, charge state, and solar productivity.

Great you can tell Embridge to pound sand. I'll be switching to a heat pump next year in Michigan. Probably the eg4. I'll be testing how much power I can make in New Mexico in about 3 weeks. Thanks for all the great ideas. Krypto mining would be an interesting video some day.

I'd like to at some point, but I need a lot more panels if I'm going to heat water as well. Thanks for watching once again! I might do a crypto video at some point, you're not the first to mention it.

and... propane is MUCH more expensive than natural gas.... insulate well, thermal storage batteries..... the UK has been using "nightstor" type heaters for a long time..... but in a different way, they are a great match for solar and nightime heat..... I'm testing a kiln filled with Basaltic rock.... could use sand etc. If you have enough interior room could use water too.

ps my plan: heat pump during the day , getting the room(s) as hot as possible near the end of the day, and only using resistive heating for the hight temp thermal batteries. Then heat a small well insulated room to a comfortable temp with the thermal battery. If/when that runs out AND battery is available use the mini split at a low level (i'd probably be sleeping by then). If several days of cloudy weather then use diesel parking heater/ run generator to charge batts and recover the heat from it. Very last resort burn propane (because the house has that already)

Great video. I hope you will have follow-up on how many Wh per day the EG4 uses to keep the house at 68F.

Your furnace fan may draw 200, 300 or even more watts. I understand it improves overall comfort but I'm not sure it improves efficiency.

It only uses 90w on low fan speed and 400w in second stage heat, with the inducer and gas valve on. It's pretty efficient. It's well worth it to run the continuous fan to help get heat to the bedrooms.

@@SmitHVAC. Ah low speed. That makes a difference.

You mentioned you have a couple of timers to turn the mini split on and off during the night. What timer do you have to do this? Is it built into the mini split? Is it an external timer? Links? Thanks…….
