I went to high school with Chris, he was the coolest, most down-to-earth Guy in school. I remember him bringing a fiberglass electric-resophonic guitar, that blew our minds!
It would have been an honor beyond measure just to have met the man. I bought "Living With The Law" for almost nothing in Athens Ga. some time in the mid nineties. The first time I played it I mostly sat transfixed with my jaw on the floor for 40 some odd minutes. It was almost like a religious experience. I have still never heard it's equal. I checked every record store I visited over for the next year ago. Nobody seemed to know anything about him. If they did they only knew about that first album. One of the first things I ever typed into a search bar was Chris Whitley. I found "Din of Ecstasy" and "War Crime Blues". I ordered both. The very next search broke my heart. Chris had passed away a year or so earlier. If I ever found a bottle with a genie inside, you can bet one of my wishes would be to see Chris live. In my opinion he is the most overlooked music of the 20th and 21st centuries. R.I.P. Chris. Thanks so much for making the soundtrack of my life.
I am a 44 year old german guy and i saw him live in berlin over 20 years ago and his music became one of my best friends in my life. No words to express what this music does to me. He had so much passion in his unique playing. It warms my heart that other people feel the same. Prayers to Chris thanks for your gifts ❤🙏
Hi, German Guy - Katie here. I created this channel, as well as a Facebook group (facebook.com/groups/allthingschriswhitley), a blog (allthingschriswhitley.com/ ), and a Chris Whitley collection of bootlegs on the Live Music Archive (archive.org/details/ChrisWhitley?sort=-date). If you attended a gig in Berlin, I'm guessing it was at Quasimodo's; you'll find recordings of his shows there on the archive.org link. You're not the only one who feels that there is something religious about the experience of listening to his music: allthingschriswhitley.com/2013/06/27/on-being-baptized-in-the-church-of-chris-whitley/
Vielen Gruß aus Amerika. Ich habe in Deutschland fünf Jahre verbracht. Davon zweieinhalb in Berlin. Vom Seele ins Musik direkt. Wirklich schön.
You'll find a few other videos in which Chris plays Phone Call posted on my channel (e.g., kind of a poor video but great playing here: ruclips.net/video/tc66fZ7p8D8/видео.html If you prefer a less propulsive rendition: ruclips.net/video/iGPQt33EWOw/видео.html
I miss Chris and his music. Wish the world would embrace, raw, natural talent like his, instead of the puke they shove into the ears of the masses. I was so lucky to have known him. He is missed.
According to our tour guide, the only time Chris played San Antonio was late November 1996 at Sneaker's. We don't have a bootleg of that show, but here's one from that month with what is probably a similar setlist: archive.org/details/cw1996-11-16 The Power Down from that set is pretty good! - a preview of Terra Incognita.
I always think of it as some of us caught the whispers in the wind about this man and we were the lucky ones. Maybe, some day, the rest of the world will catch up. But until then, we hold onto one the greatest secrets whispered through the wind.
From his first album to his last and he gave his all every live performance I went to every show had in Colorado and he blew me away every time buy dirt floor I do miss him I remember when he came out with din and nobody was giving him air play and he played a dive bar on East Colfax in Denver and I was there and he was in the alley smoking a cigarette and we talked great performance and great soul
inly got to see him live once, back when i think he was touring "Living With The Law" still and he was opening for Tom Petty. at the time i only knew "big Sky Country" and i liked it but i had not heard anything else by him, it is the only time in my entire life that i went out and bought an album based solely on seeing someone play live. .
2,177 views.....really? I have seen Chris in concert twice in the UK at that club just off Oxford Street....the man was something very special with his take on music. i managed to talk to him for 5 minutes. I miss him.
I chatted with him for a few minutes in 2000 or 2001 when he played a small tour in support of what must've been the Perfect Day Tour in Salt Lake City. I remember him being pretty shy and frail. Great show, though, and his playing was anything but reserved.
Saw Chris in Madison WI in like 91-92 playing a small theatre. He was touring with his band and opener Toad the Wet Sprocket. Sadly most the audience was there to see Toad as they had a string of radio hits. The crowd had almost zero ability to digest what Chris was laying down, quite a bummer they couldn't recognize true talent over radio drivel. Great show though and glad I saw him on the living with the law tour.
Thanks for your memory. I obviously agree with the masses not recognizing true talent. Learn more about Chris at the All Things Chris Whitley group on Facebook!
I saw them in Dallas on the same tour! I met a cool gal at that show! Her mom made decorations for grandy's restaurants. That's trippy no? It was on her recommendation that I got my first Toad CD. Now I dig them too. What ya gonna do
Saw Chris in 1991 at the Paradise in Boston. He had just previously opened for Tom Petty. It was just Chris and his National guitar. Jaw dropping talent.
Yup - see foot motions around the 25 second mark. I've written a bit about Chris's use of a boot board in this draft blog post (scroll down to the end): wp.me/p3GDKV-lu
I miss him every day

You seem like a hip lady
One of the most amazing, transformative and talented musicians who ever lived. So very glad I got to see him live in San Antonio, TX.

Raw, the only way to describe CW. Raw and beautiful.
Thank you Chris. Unfortunately the world will never know but only a few of us will know your greatness. RIP old friend,

One of my guitar 🎸 heroes

Such an underrated talent! ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
An incredible unforgettable artist. What a typically great live performance.
Incredible talent. One -of-kind. Struggling REAL artist. So wish he had an easier time. RIP man.
So lucky to have seen him live a bunch, including right before his tragic passing. A gracious and brilliant performer. Miss him all the time.

There was no one like him then or now. He was amazing.
Hey, Mark - Join us on FB (All Things Chris Whitley) to share the love!
So beautiful. Love you Mr. Whitley.
Wow....can't believe I'm only just discovering Chris now.
Lots to discover! If you're on Facebook, you might enjoy facebook.com/groups/allthingschriswhitley/

Got to hang out with Chris after a show in Charlottesville, VA. Very down to earth and humble and of course, incredibly talented Lost too soon
I LOVE ME SOME CHRIS WHITLEY !!!!
amazing guitar.
This is not entirely solo. He made the original choice to be accompanied by Mike Foot, who doesn't appear often.
😆🤣😆🤣
🔥♥️

Do you mean The Borderline? Check out the All Things Chris Whitley group on Facebook for more.
Yes..it was the Borderline, Katie. Thank-you for the info. Great link!
Well, if you're now a member of the CW group, check out the Guardian's meh-not-so-much review of Chris's show at that venue.

I saw him on that tour also. He was awesome in the truest sense of the word. Trixie sounds so much like him.
Ooh. I saw him at Martyr's in Chicago a couple times but I live in Madison now. Wish he were still around. Talented dude and a real artist.
I saw them in Dallas on the same tour! I met a cool gal at that show! Her mom made decorations for grandy's restaurants. That's trippy no? It was on her recommendation that I got my first Toad CD. Now I dig them too. What ya gonna do
Her name was Shelly D. I oughta write me one of them Old 97s tunes about her ;)
awesome as ever and forever RIP brother
One of a kind👌...
Saw Chris in 1991 at the Paradise in Boston. He had just previously opened for Tom Petty. It was just Chris and his National guitar. Jaw dropping talent.
I saw him in 2005 in Vienna, Virginia. He was in bad shape and died less than a year later. Heroin,man.....
Singular Artist. One of a kind.
He is missed RIP
Fantastic!
Thank you! Cheers!
A world ruled by a Madonna/Rianha/Ricky Martin´s tirany and no C. Whitley music on mass media... dark future.
He was the bright light that keep hope alive for a lot of us
That's showbiz my friend.
Is he stomping a bass kick with his foot and we can’t see it but can hear it? Duh, now I see it - he’s stomping a slanted board that is mic’d. Wow❤
Yup - see foot motions around the 25 second mark. I've written a bit about Chris's use of a boot board in this draft blog post (scroll down to the end): wp.me/p3GDKV-lu

God took you too early! Rip
What's up with this crowd?? They look like a dog that's been shown a new trick! Love Chris's energy here.
My great uncle got sent to Leavenworth when he was in the army. I don’t think it was a promotion.
