    I love the atmosphere of the arena.. The crowd murmuring with each bowl played.. Light aircraft flying overhead, beautiful summers day in Port Philip.. A Scotsman in Australia playing bowls.. An international bowls player... Oh to be one of those.. The stuff of dreams for me x

    Great idea to end the video before you see where the last bowl went. Well done!

    ty very much for this old bowls game. It shows a lot about the game and strategy back in the 80s and the spectators. I appreciate it and hope people post other old bowls games of the past. Thank you

    Wow remember Jack High when i was a kid. I went to a coaching course by the marker in my first year of bowling. What caught my eye was the lovely even draw of both sets of bowls, years later we have bowls that draw the same as these did on that green all those years ago. Well bugger me!

    Good to see the bowls actually bending. Modern game all about minimum bias bowls.

    This game really emphasises the risk involved in driving and the stability you gain when you focus on the draw shot.

    I am not into lawn bowling. I mean, I have played a few times as a kid at family reunions and stuff, but that's the extent of it. I randomly stumbled upon this video and began watching. I ended up being really into it and was rooting for Parella because I love a good comeback.
    WHO THE F WINS THIS GAME?!?

    About time the title was changed. Ryan Bester and Jeremy Henry leave Parella in their wake!

      Difficult to compare because bowls used had much more bias back then and due to narrower bowls these days the heads are tighter so targets are bigger. Parella would hold his own against those guys if he was in his heyday in the current time.

    Best driver of all time? He missed nearly all of them?!

    • @BassGoBomb
      @BassGoBomb 2 года назад

      Quite. I seem to recall an old adage .. a drive will work 5% of the time .. a draw will work 95% of the time- or at least 'cut it down' .. and, of course you are ready for the draw on the next end .. Not that I mind driving or having one played against me .. but I do remember that much of the time .. in the old days they didn't work so much. These days folks, in Oz, especially, seem much better at it and get good results.

    The rules of bowls at this time were that he trial ends were not a part of the game ... i.e. they were beyond the rules. Basically, the ruling was that the game does not start until the mat goes down for the first end (i.e. of the game proper End 1), and that the rules are for the game once it starts. When I started playing and taught myself the rules of the game and learned how to 2-finger type: I typed out all the rules .. it wasn't 70 odd pages long, and no appendices, in those days .. more like 20 pages. I was fascinated that the trial ends were not a part of the game and checked with a few Umpires (my step-father being one too) .. and sure enough you could put the mat wherever you wished (I still have this set of rules .. cost 20p..!! Yes, International too) use different types of bowls (as you can today), including on the string (back in the day, when we used strings as rink boundaries if you wished). The next player can put the mat where he wishes or put it back if you moved it .. all the rest, in those days, was just fluff.

    Parella is the worst driver of all time. Dirty trick cutting out the ending. I'm sure Wood was the better bowler and won.
