    You can get a 2020-2019 model megasquirt off eBay for around $200-$250 with built in map sensor and launch/anti-lag..... Hell a chipped Honda p28 or p72 ECU with a little modification would work all the same as well, certain chips have on the fly tuning capabilities just like a standalone ECU, best part is those ECS can be bought from junk yards for $20 and eBay for about $35, with the socket already soldered in and some random chip you can get them for around $100 $150 as well

      Cheapest right now is over double that and recent sales cheapest is only $300-500. Buy one and send it to him! :D

    It's been a while since I messed with a 730 ecm, but I am thinking that the injector strategy is different between a TBI and TPI. A TBI fires the injector every spark reference pulse and alternates from one injector to the other, but TPI fires all the injectors every 4th spark reference pulse so the injectors only fire once every crankshaft rotation. That would cause a really lean running condition. I don't know if that parameter can be adjusted in the program code or not. Another alternative might be swapping to a 16197427 pcm. It came in 94/95 GM trucks and will run 4/6/8 cylinder engines with TBI, port FI, or the funky Vortec spider injector system. There is a flag in the tuner to swap the injector strategy between the different injection systems.

    Couldn't have said it better about tuning. Though I will say... I threw a 7747 with EBL in my vette when I did the engine work. I took a wild ass guess at the tune for the initial fire up and left it in open loop. It started and idled at 750 immediately... I let it warm up, pulled it off the jack stands and went on a 50 mile drive... AFR was around 13:1 the whole time. I was legitimately shocked it didn't stall or hesitate a single time. Fueling above 4k was rich but it drove well... Then I spent the last 3 years perfecting the tune and I'm still not quite there lol.

  • @208Concepts

    I know on Ford boxes, there is a setting that tells the ECU how many cylinders it has. I haven't tried doing this myself but I know it's possible.
    It may be a setting on those as well.

    • @mitch91Z28
      @mitch91Z28 2 года назад +3

      The GM TPI ecu shouldn't care, the fuel injectors are batch fired and all fire simultaneously. All it needs to run is a couple sensors and the tune they were messing with.

    Hah! I like the "ghetto fab" 7730. But I didn't see it coming. Lots of Fiero guys use that ECM, for v6 AND v8 applications. Good show!

  • @yorgle11
    @yorgle11 2 года назад

    I was writing a whole big post with a bunch of suggestions, including some stuff about the tune, ways to test for a vacuum leak, and even about going to the thirdgen forum because they have such a strong group of GM ECM tuning experts over there.
    I'm glad I watched this part before posting, lol.
    Awesome that you got it this far. I've done some minor tweaking on a mid-80s GM ECM but nothing from scratch like this. I've collected parts to convert my car to that same 1227730 (it's a much better ECM than a few years earlier, and is a well understood favorite), but I haven't actually done it yet. Hopefully it won't be a nightmare - but there's a factory tune for the 7730 that's very similar to my car so that should make it a lot easier.
    I think your tune is especially challenging because there's no factory tune for anything much like your engine, so you don't have a good starting point to work from.
    A longass time ago I had a cammed 2.5L duke. Occasionally it would get into that low loping idle at stop lights, which was pretty awesome. It didn't do it very often though. I didn't know anything about tuning back then, probably could have made it run better if I had delved into that.

    From an antique computer to a not as old antique computer! There has to be millions of 4 cylinder later model cars in the junkyard you could source a computer from that was made in this century. 🙄LOL
    Anyway, I know the newer v8 confusers are re-programable, maybe look for a 4 banger one that is easily re-programable? No need for a $2,000 confuser, a junkyard donor car should have what you need that you can splice onto your harness or totally yoink the matching harness off of that donor car too and use that. Grab the fuel system while you're there as well to upgrade to multipoint fuel injection. Use your Corvette injectors so they're big enough when you're ready for boost.
    You're going to have a hard enough time tuning the throttle inj. without boost even worse when you introduce boost into the equation. Dealers choice though, I'll keep watching whatever you decide, just hate seeing you struggle with the antique operating system that has very little support and is very limited on its tunability. Good luck.

      This is a Mercruiser 3 Liter... I would think it needs the computer from the boat. But they're so bound and determined to get it to run on antique hardware, that I really don't think he'll want to do it. We can suggest it until we're blue in the face.

      @@ak_strem7010 but that was an 8 cylinder with a turbo. You're trying to tune this computer with a 4 cylinder. I get that you don't have the cash to drop on an an aftermarket ECU, but don't you think that maybe the extremely limited computer is what's causing all of the tuning issues? That's why I think you guys are struggling to get things tuned correctly. If you had a more modern system from a more modern vehicle, then there's way more options to get it tuned properly. That's just my thoughts
