Awesome video! I ran one of those for 10 years in the Army, still have the manual. Wish I owned one. I would often tune in an AM rock station out of Chicago. Hanging around my rig after chow was a big hit. Everybody got to listen to some old rock & roll. The set looks really clean and if not vehicular mounted, will last for years. Been a long time since I've heard the ''Russian Woodpecker''. I really envy you.
The transmitter the R-392 goes with is the T-195, the two in the system is the AN/GRC-19. The NET function in the receiver is to net the transmitter to the receiver or vice versa, to zero beat the transmitter frequency (while the T-195 mode switch is on Calibrate) to the receiver frequency. I use my GRC-19 setup almost daily on our regional AM nets on 80 and 160 meters. N4LQ posted a video I took of the station in operation to RUclips.
Nice military rig, and i managed to buy a used icom r 9500 and really love it, i think you have one also and if so whats your opinion on the r 9500.., matt
Hi Matt I would love to have a 9500 but I don’t. All the vendors say 4-6 weeks lead time but with current supply chain issues thats easily doubled. Maybe someday
Any year Collins equipment is worth while for everyday use. Collins is top of the line, dependable, long life equipment to own and be pleased with. Yes, they are pricey, but you are buying quality, not junk.
It is a great receiver, but no greater than many of my other receivers, see my other videos. It is fun to play with all the knobs and dials but if I need to do some serious listening I am not using the 390
The R-392 was solid as a rock and was built for portable operation. That in mind, it was pretty awesome to get a lot of features from the R-390a in a smaller "portable" and shock mounted rig!

Thanks Mel. You were probably listening to WLS the 100,000 watt station from Chicago. I get it easily here in Dallas. All the best to you!

I believe the squelch position disables the RF gain control making it full rf gain and the rf gain control becomes a squelch control.Jim KB1PFL
The R-390 is a military HF receiver.
Exceptionally clean any suggestion to replicate - the cleanliness ? Mine is pretty dusty looking - do not want to just wash it HI HI HI
I would start with a clean, dry toothbrush and start scrubbing

Wish I could get mine working. Doesn't make peep of noise.
Some say it's a bad Collins, I see you have a 390 next to it. I'd like to have your opinion.
