  • Steroids are more popular than heroin. In fact, by some estimates, they are the second most popular illicit drug, after cannabis.
And we need to talk about it.
Why are people using steroids? What are the effects? And why do users often not even think of themselves as “drug users”?
We dive deep into the world of steroids, and ask what this massive, unexplored drugs scene tells us about the way we think about bodies, masculinity and drug use in general.

I think a big problem with steroids is the way they are normalized in pop culture as well. You don't even have to look at bodybuilding pros to see steroids in use. Chris Hamsworth as Thor, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson. they are just two examples of people who are, at least obvious to people who work out, on gear.

Exactly. And what troubles me is their 'motivation' or 'grind' videos with millions of views perpetuates these expectations of what hard work can achieve. With expectations like that boys become frustrated by comparatively smaller results, even if those results are massive and to be proud of.

Townshend is objectively wrong. In a study, participants were provided either a steroid or a placebo, and both groups were further divided into two sub-groups, which were instructed to either exercise on a regular schedule or avoid exercise entirely. At the end of the trial period, the participants who took steroids but did not exercise had higher muscle growth than the participants that took the placebo and regularly exercised.

I am not endorsing steroids at all. I've been dealing with HIV and AIDS for over 30 years and there was a six-month. Where my doctor put me on human growth hormone to try to get some weight and muscle back on me. It was the most incredible stuff I've ever seen in my life! It was exactly like I was 18 years old again. Everything I ate be it protein or fat or carbohydrates turned immediately into muscle. My hair grew faster and my nails grow faster I had more energy then I've had since I was a teenager. The problem is you can't keep your body ramped-up like this forever. And if you have a little tiny tumor somewhere human growth hormone acts like fertilizer on it. It is not a benign drug but used correctly it can be remarkable.

Household names like Dwayne Johnson has normalized steroid bigness the same way Arnold did via film. Both have done family and young adult action films. A gym member who was 5-6 years older than me taught me some exercises and told me how muscular and vascular his body was a few years ago. He then showed me his chest and I noticed that he had swollen nipples even though he wasn't high in body fat. His explanation for this condition was: Since I don't exercise as actively as I used to, I got fat deposits in my chest. He also told me about problems in his joints. I'm pretty sure today that he suffered from gynecomastia due to his previous steroid abuse. Thank god I never touched steroids.

I’ve run all the gear before, now only do TRT! Gyno is mainly from poor diet while on gear, doing hard cardio and keeping diet in check will prevent most. Also not blasting stupid dosages like 250mg/week and above. Tren can lead to a different issue, prolactin build up.
Most males already have some gyno from puberty or being overweight, also vascularity does not go away once the gear stops, as your red blood cell count will stay elevated unless you donate blood.

One thing this video didn't address is the increase of fly-by-night HRT clinics. Younger males-as young as 19-are able to get prescribed Testosterone and other androgens, even if their testosterone levels are within the normal range. This is problematic because social media fitness influencers endorse these clinics-as well as offer promo codes for them. That along with heavy SARM usage among teenagers has led younger males to mess around with their endocrine system at such a young age.

And because there were guys in high school who were lifting and I wanted to be like them. I didn't know about steroids until the 1980's. As much as I wanted to look like Arnold I was just not willing to compromise my health. I did inject testosterone enanthate in low doses at age 55 for about 8 months and took anavar during that time as well. Haven't used since. Bodybuilding is about turning weaknesses into strengths. As much as I hate my structure, I love my health more. I don't judge others for their choices however.

There is a marked difference between anabolics which are completely synthetic made to trigger certain things in your body vs. those that are testosterone based so they are just supplementing your body with what is there already yet is in a decreased state due to some outside rreason. For example studies show our low quality of air and water polution are direct causes of overall decrease in natural testosterone production.. Low test has been p[roven to cause depression, lack of overall drive among other negative things. So naturally if you supplement the testosterone you will reduce the amount of depression caused by low test levels. I have had very much an imporved overall life situation due to these supplements. Including longevity in the bedroom, higher drive as well as a reduced fat level overall and overall more and better quality muscle production and longevity as well. I know far more people that have used steroids than have used heroin (most people I've trained, that's one of their first questions). Especially with social media, it has basically become standard for men to go to the gym for 3 months and then hop on some sort of assistance to get instant results. People are NOT educated on what these substances do in the body, and often times mess themselves up. I know a lot of people that get clean from "hard" drugs and start to use steroids immediately. It is difficult to describe how steroids make you feel, but I will say that every time I have juiced, I have eventually relapsed on hard drugs. Most people in my area that sell simply buy them and have them shipped from overseas; it is not difficult, and they are cheap.

To a certain degree, its not linear. Its like you changed your genetic baseline for muscle retention/growth. Unforturnately a lot of studies do not really take into account the relative affect on a trained individual to an un-trained. If you are natural and training and take steroids but stop training (of course this is all relative, how advanced of a lifter you are and how much you take/what you take etc) you will most likely lose strength and mass. I am currently still a natural lifter (I compete in powerlifting recreationally) but my coach has spoken to me about the path of gear if I am to choose that road. As I am somewhat advanced (3.5 x BW deadlift, 3x BW squat, 2x BW bench, roughly ofc), if I am to take steroids for it to be worthwile I will need to increase the intensity of my training to see the true benefits of them. (I know steroids in strength sports are used differently to bodybuilding, but we take the same drugs, just different cycles and peaking techniques etc)

But then the group that took roids and also hit the gym were like 6 times stronger than the next group. People sometimes downplay how much of a factor steroids are. And the obvious corollary that if the effect is big then the side-effects will also be big.

Great video. One point that was made about steroids, in the beginning, isn't actually true. While many anabolic drugs certainly help you workout harder and recover quicker, many of these substances will make you more muscular without any resistance training. Obviously not to the same degree, but still to a significant, measurable extent. Depending on the dosage, multiple studies have found that, if given enough of an anabolic substance, non-resistance training groups grow more muscle in the short term than drug-free resistance training groups. Similar to how a teenager can often gain some muscle merely because they are going through adolescence and have increased androgenic hormones in their system.

This was more of a social review of the problem. Should have focused as well on the serious side effects that most users--and physicians--are unaware of. For example, the fact that, by using steroids, men can inflict sometimes permanent damage on their natural hypogonadal system as the steroids shut down a man's natural testosterone production. In the US, Dr. Michael Scally and Dr.Thomas O'Connor (aka the Anabolic Doc) have written extensively about this, and anabolic steroids induced hypogonadism (ASIH) is now recognized by the Endocrine Society as a unique form of hypogonadism experienced by steroids users.

She is wrong about the "steroids alone won't give you results". Studies show that a moderate dose of testosterone (around 400mg) makes physically non-active users outperform dedicated weight lifters in regard to hypertrophy.
Therefore, the problem with bodybuilding is that success within the sport is more bound to the actual hormonal situation your body is in than in any other sports as hypertrophy directly correlates with androgen levels in the body (in addition to other PED's like growth hormone, insulin, peptides etc.).
This has lead to a situation where professionals in the sport pin themselves often more than 10x times a day (including gh and insulin) to maximise results.

If you don’t challenge the muscle it will eventually stop growing even with excess androgens.

Secondly, she says that "if you are just injecting steroids without doing physical training, nothing is going to happen". This is not true. There are various studies that suggest that injecting high doses of anabolic steroids alone lead to significant increases in muscle mass compared to placebo.

There's a reason why steroid users faces change. Their jaw muscles will grow from just fucking eating.
She also says it just makes you work harder. Complete nonsense, many steroids grow muscles beyond the natural skeletal limit of the body.

My cousin started abusing steroids when he was 16, he put 50lb on in 18 month and wasn’t cycling he just kept bang at it. By the time he was 19 he ended up going into psychosis and has been in and out of psychiatric hospitals ever since. Steroids can be great when used correctly but like most things abuse them at your own risk. I’m in my late 40s and have been put on TRT and I feel great since I started taking them but I’m just taking enough to get my testosterone levels to that of a man in their early 20s.

I work out and stay in shape almost entirely BECAUSE I want to get more attention from women(and to be healthy ofc) and that's where the buck stops there for me, I care only very little about showing off how fit or swoll I am to other guys. Even after 20 years of working out since my teen years I have not once touched or am considering using steroids because I DO NOT want to get massive. When it comes to female attraction there is no advantage to being HUGE vs being generally fit. Personally I've always though it was unattractive past a certain point and it makes sense to me now why I think that way, because the guys who go on to use steroids are mostly doing it because they are competing with other guys or seeking the approval of ones peers. If that's what you want good for you, but me? I'm going to stay natural for life thank you very much.

The only things I found super questionable is the needle line story and the "dark web" steroids are openly sold world wide on sites you can find on google on the open web and either shipped domestically or shipped illegally into your country through a neighboring country where it is legal for example Mexico to America or in Europe usually from like Poland, Greece to whatever EU country you live in. No need to buy from shady guy who bought it from the "dark web" from like Pakistani lab anymore in most places.

I'm well versed in kinesiology, biochemistry, nutrition and supplementation, endocrinology, the mechanisms of action involved in AAS use and the compounds themselves. This lady is talking ridiculous, first there is little to no actual vast enough , peer reviewed, double blind easily duplicated studies to show it has negative effects on our health, organs or lifespan.. also her story about 5 people being inject at once in the gym is hilarious hqhaha such a bulkshit made up tale. Hundreds of millions of people use steroids or have and 98% live full healthy lives.

Underground labs mostly make novel compounds or so called frakenstein compounds not the common stuff most people use.
