    My girl loves riding her mule down there. She said the terrain is pretty challenging and there’s alot of cool stuff to see. I’m hoping to make it down there sometime soon to explore.

    Those cotton mouths can definitely get hidden pretty good on trail, glad that one was off trail. Beautiful looking area with some good views brother!

      Thanks! Yeah, we didn't see any snakes along the trail, only at the base of the bluffs. Cool place.

    Nice walk-about... great forces served to rend that landscape. I used to see Red Velvet Ants out that way. No worries about snakes... Catfish chops rattlesnakes, cooks them up with eggies for breakfast... Cheers!

      Haha! Catfish has no fear. We didn't see any velvet ants this time, but definitely looks like the kind of environment for them. Thanks for watching!

    Wish we had more time when we went there during the summer. Great explanation. We missed out on the little grand canyon. When we went, it was on our way to Metropolis. My wife said this was one of the favorite spots we went to this year.

    Thanks for this upload. I did this trail over the summer and may have been underprepared. I had a couple scary moments going downhill on the wet rocks. Me and a another hiker got lost on the way back up the other side, but it was scenic and a worthy adventure.

      It is a gorgeous hike, but I hear that it changes with every season. We were there in the fall, with the creeks very low and the trail fairly easy to follow. But I can see how it would be more difficult when everything is fully leafed out, rocks more slippery when wet, and of course, there are several "user made" trails that branch off the main trail that can be confusing.

    Didn’t realize about the venomous snake. Good to know the next time we are there. The view is spectacular. This place reminds me of Matthiessen State Park. What, that snake in little cave - no way.

    You tell him, Catfish!! 😅 That view is gorgeous! That is in Illinois?!? Love that trail. Wow, he is huge.... 🐝 I love those rock walls and trails too. Those weird rock formations are sooo cool! I think we might have to try to get down there next year! Thanks for sharing! 😃👍

      Haha! We love most all wildlife, especially things we don't get to see very often, such as these cottonmouths. We've encountered them a few times during the snake migration on Snake Road (just a few miles south of this location,) as well as many other snakes in other places. We've just learned their behaviors, which is mostly docile as long as people don't harass them. FYI, we found those snakes along the bluff, we were specifically hoping to find them, the official trail actually stays 20-80 feet away from the bluffs, so it would still be safe for a family to hike, just watch the trail as you walk!

    What was that pink plant?

    • @SlonesWildernessExpeditions
      @SlonesWildernessExpeditions  3 года назад +1

      Indian Pipe, also known as Ghost Pipe, it's a plant that is often mistaken for a fungus. We have seen white ones in the past, this was the first time we saw one with that pinkish color.

    The snake at 7.25 was a Copperhead and not a Cottonmouth. You can tell by the Hersey kiss like markings on the side. This snake is venomous and likely responsible for More venomous snakebites in the USA than any snake.

    • @SlonesWildernessExpeditions
      @SlonesWildernessExpeditions  3 года назад

      Cottonmouths also have that marking, ESPECIALLY the younger ones. They get darker as they grow.
