Hutchins Creek Q & A:
1. How rugged in this trail? East Godwin to Hutchins Creek is moderately difficult with rolling hills, switchbacks, creek crossings, overgrown spots on the trail during summer months and rocky areas. It is a climb back up for a while as well - prepare for a workout. The awesome scenic creek is so worth it though. Hutchins Creek Road on the north end of the creek offers an easier access point to the creek, however.
2. How long is this trail and is it a loop? Pending on how much of the creek you walk, this hike can be anywhere from 4 to 11 miles there and back, longer if you hike from East to West Godwin trailheads and back. There is no loop.
3. Are there signs or blazes along this trail? Yes, the blazes are the blue/white "i" diamond and brown "i" diamond, River to River Trail blazes as this is a section of the River to River Trail. Consider downloading Avenza on your smartphone (free) and the R2R Trail Bundle (also free) for easy navigation, especially in areas where no data is available for phones. Visit the River to River Trail Society at www.rivertorivertrail.net and download the free updated River to River Trail Guide for more River to River Trail information. This PDF is updated as needed.
4. Any suggestions? This area is near Pine Hills and other swampy areas. Because of that, bugs seems to be more prone in these areas including Buffalo Gnats and Horse Flies. It is advisable that you apply bug and tick deterent before visiting.Bring plenty of water and a snack. Watch your step as venomous snakes are present in this area including cottonmouths, copperheads and timber rattlesnakes. Respect private property and pack out what you pack in.

Im from half way around the world but wow this place looks so beautiful and amazing
It's one of my favorite creeks to walk around my parts!
Wow that’s one place I’ve not explored yet...definitely on my to do list soon ..!!!!...
Campostoma anomalum (central stoneroller) are the fish you are seeing they graze algae off the rocks. Lots of other cool species in there but those were stonerollers.
Thank you!
Hutchins Creek is absolutely gorgeous and I've found a few state-endangered fish in it, even. Also several Midland Watersnakes.
Do you remember what endangered fishes there are there? I remember seeing Notropis boops (Big Eye Shiner) in there can't remember the others but it is a beautiful stream
.
This is one of my favorite hikes that we've done. Thank you for showing it to me.
I’m glad I got to share it with you :)
Woohoo fish in a Hiking with Shawn video!! I might be down on the 31st and 1st for snake road. Going to be hard to get any other time off work but maybe again mid /late October. Think it will even be worth it on the 31/1st ?
Maybe, we've had some cool days that might help move the critters :)
Looks beautiful! In your QA you mentioned an easier access point further north, can you tell where that is and how that might be for a beginning hiker who isn’t in great shape yet?
I’m sorry. I meant the south. Here is where you need to go :) very very easy access!
