    With Britain's planned exit from the European Union just two months away, the more than 300,000 Britons living in Spain feel abandoned by their government. These expats could lose their right to Spain's free healthcare system and also their right to vote in local and European elections. If they take Spanish nationality, they'll have to renounce their British one. Many are campaigning to protect their rights but feel powerless over their future. Our correspondents report.

      The actual definition is that an expat is someone who goes to another country, but has not decided to live there permanently. An immigrant is someone who goes to another country, and intends to live there forever.
      So, EU citizens coming to the UK just for work - expat
      UK pensioners moving to settle in Spain - Immigrant
      Of course, the way the words are used in the media is all-important. Poor Poora describes it best above:
      "If you go to live to another country to spend your money there you are an expat if you go to live in foreign country to work for national minimum wage, live from benefits and save money eating dog food - you are an immigrant"
      That's the way the words are used in reality.
      For example, have you ever seen, or could you even imagine, a non-white person being described as an expat?

    • @poorpoora
      @poorpoora 5 лет назад

      @@kensavage7657 The key issue is the purpose not the colour. Colour hasn't even come to my mind until you wrote about it which makes me think that you are colored person as white people don't permamently have colours on their minds and don't feel unstoppable urge to talk about colours all the time. I'm sure that if Spain doesn't want the money of these English retired managers, judges and officers then other country will make them welcome. Bahamas, Hawai, Bali, Thailand. You name them. That makes them expats according to your definition. They are not pernament. Immigrants want to get to and stay in UK, work for national minimum wage and save money eating dog food. That makes them permanent. I fully agree with you my friend.

    I used to have a condo in Fuengirola.
    I enjoyed my stay there but there is little integration between the locals and the expats.
    We Irish integrated a bit better because to attend Sunday religious service we simply joined the natives in their local Catholic church for one thing.
    Each nationality tends to cluster together - mostly around their bars; English bars for the English, Irish bars for the Irish and so on.
    There will be many EU citizens living in Britain after Brexit as there will be British citizens living in Spain so some quid pro quo arrangement will have to be made.
    I'm told that many Brits flew home to vote for Brexit and then flew back quickly to their sun-drenched balconies; strange behaviour if it happened.
    It will be sorted out I hope - don't worry, be happy.

    Having the opportunity to move overseas is a privilege and not all people who want to do this can.
    Moving overseas should always be seen as a risk, as immigration laws and boarders do change.
    If these people are not pertinent residence or citizens of Spain then they run a risk of obtaining this status or being deported post brexit.
    They are current in ‘privilege’ territory not ‘right’.
    Tonnes of you POM’s down here don’t always have the right to remain and back you go. Rules are rules and can and do change.
    People fortunate enough to live in Sunny Spain need to prep for this. Learn the language and customs and become Spanish residents.
    If you can’t then that’s just life. Visas get cancelled on people down here all the time not just from the UK. Families very happy just have to leave. Protect your rights in the county you live in don’t depend on another country to support you there.

    • @ldno3747
      @ldno3747 6 лет назад

      This is only if you born with dual nationality. Legally in Spain you cannot retain your old nationality if you apply for Spanish Nationality. Of course you don't lose your British or whatever since it is yours by birth but you are in theory required to return your old passport and such. You can have your Spanish passport cancelled and Spanish nationality revoked if you abuse the system.

    • @rollosinternet1853
      @rollosinternet1853 6 лет назад +1

      That works for Spanish people wanting British nationality. They go through the process, pay over 1,500 quid and afterwards they only have to declare at the Spanish Embassy that they do not wish to lose their Spanish nationality. BUT for British, they do need to renounce their British nationality in order to become Spanish nationals. There is no dual nationality agreement between Spain and the UK. They would actually lose their British nationality, permanently. For me, they can go straight back home, they cost more in medical expenses than what they give to Spain. They tend to live in little Britains with mini markets, pubs and fish&chips owned by other British immigrants, and laugh at Spaniards serving them when they speak English. Hypocrites.
      If there is an agreement about they being allowed (I repeat, being allowed) to stay in Spain without having to become Spanish nationals, it would not cover their moving to other EU members, as they would have lost their freedom of movement. If they become Spanish, then they would retain that right, but they would have to be treated as no national in the UK, so visa or whatever and the same limitations as EU immigrants.

      @William Doubleu Most of the Spanish and other EU immigrants in the UK do work and pay taxes, so they have direct right to the NHS. They are not being given any gift, they pay for it. 3/4 of the British immigrants in the EU are retired, with a far more expensive health cost because of their age related problems. It makes perfect sense that they are not covered by their host countries. It will have to be the UK to continue covering their health bills when the EU members claim them back.

    Well I think they will be in for a rude awakening because within the EU they can get health care in Spain without paying for insurance but now they will need to pay for it and they will lose other privileges as well plus will likely need to pay for some sort of visa etc.

    There will be no change to Brexpat status in Spain. Spain is aware that the economy would be severely damaged without Brexpats or British tourists. I have just returned from skiing in France & it's also plain to see that British tourists spend small fortunes in French ski resorts.....in fact, there are so many Brits in Val d'Isere that it gave the impression of a British resort. It's business as usual folks & a warm welcome to big spending Brits!

      There is another video from the same town where the British "ex-pats" admitted they voted to leave the EU. Just think about how stupid you would have to be to do such a thing! One guy voted to leave and then, after Article 50 was enacted, moved to Spain and bought a property. It's not just the ignorance that is astounding, but the sense of entitlement as well.
