With Britain's planned exit from the European Union just two months away, the more than 300,000 Britons living in Spain feel abandoned by their government. These expats could lose their right to Spain's free healthcare system and also their right to vote in local and European elections. If they take Spanish nationality, they'll have to renounce their British one. Many are campaigning to protect their rights but feel powerless over their future. Our correspondents report.

They're immigrants whether they like the term or not.
BRITISH IMMIGRANTS.
Roberto Ramirez tru dat!!
Probably badly integrated immigrants who don't even speak spanish. If they want to stay, they can apply for spanish citizenship, can't they?
Why aren't they speaking Spanish? Clearly they don't want to integrate. Send them back to England
S Fuglemark LOL😀
true they come to spain because it was cheaper than uk warmer but they dont join in with spainsh comunity what i dont understand is how they can live there on there pension,i need to make at least 100 euros working in germany to stay here
Well madam, if you're such a benefit to the Spanish economy with your pension fund grocery shoppings, why not move back to the UK and benefit the local economy there? Such patriots.
We would not move back to Britain as the place is full of toxic stupid people like you.
Hypocrites.
Brexpats? No, Brimmigrants.
Cold blooded!
Hehe
Majority of them voted leave so now they can enjoy their vote!
You believe any rubbish ,you must be a brexiter..Most voted to remain.
@@michaelrowsell1160 And many were not allowed to vote.
WOW... They spend... The same as my grandmother. Pfiuuuuuu! What a boost to the Spanish economy! And the funny is that those british immigrants really believe they are "precious" to Spain... LOL
300.000 brits in a population of nearly 50 millions in Spain is a drop in the ocean in order to have an impact on the economy , the real economic benefits for Spain come from tourism of all nationalities including British , the ones that come for a couple of weeks holiday or so...
@@fredrit323 The economic impact on a national scale is minimal, but I do think there is a local impact for municipalities.
If some come to UK he is IMMIGRANT, but if brits live permanently in some other land they called EXPATS..WTF?
It is called racism.
If you go to live to another country to spend your money there you are an expat if you go to live in foreign country to work for national minimum wage, live from benefits and save money eating dog food - you are an immigrant
@@poorpoora looool 😂😂😂😂😂
The actual definition is that an expat is someone who goes to another country, but has not decided to live there permanently. An immigrant is someone who goes to another country, and intends to live there forever.
So, EU citizens coming to the UK just for work - expat
UK pensioners moving to settle in Spain - Immigrant
Of course, the way the words are used in the media is all-important. Poor Poora describes it best above:
"If you go to live to another country to spend your money there you are an expat if you go to live in foreign country to work for national minimum wage, live from benefits and save money eating dog food - you are an immigrant"
That's the way the words are used in reality.
For example, have you ever seen, or could you even imagine, a non-white person being described as an expat?
@@kensavage7657 The key issue is the purpose not the colour. Colour hasn't even come to my mind until you wrote about it which makes me think that you are colored person as white people don't permamently have colours on their minds and don't feel unstoppable urge to talk about colours all the time. I'm sure that if Spain doesn't want the money of these English retired managers, judges and officers then other country will make them welcome. Bahamas, Hawai, Bali, Thailand. You name them. That makes them expats according to your definition. They are not pernament. Immigrants want to get to and stay in UK, work for national minimum wage and save money eating dog food. That makes them permanent. I fully agree with you my friend.
I'd be ashamed if I lived in another country and didn't speak the language!
It still strikes me how British retirees keep saying things like "they want us here", "we are valuable for their economy", ... not the opinion locals voice nor the perception locals have, not at all.
@supernumery Well, those British shops have helped me to find the Cherry or Vanilla Coke xD
British arrogance in Spain , that same arrogance got them out of eu and will lead to their fall !!
they are trying to find a new colony, because Britan is rotten more than you think
@ The UK is *not* and will *never* be, that important
12 days (at 12. April 2019) until the lessons begin, and this isn't an April fools joke
I love the way after all these years they still see themselves as British and not Spanish and yet moan when other cultures don't integrate in the UK
Fascinating isn't it, how their minds do or rather don't work. The other chief was reading the Daily Mail at the meeting lol
They most likely have only 10 words in Spanish as well...
But our children become Spanish.Unlike in Britain where Muslims will still think themselves from Pakistan for the next thousand years.
Native Hunters well actually, this video actually shows the expats moaning 😂
Actually, a lot of British immigrants in Spain voted for Brexit. This is evidence how well the leave campaign informed the people about the personal consequences.
I think that after some years hey weren't allowed to vote about motherland issues
sorry... but now they got what they voted for !
They are not expats, they are Spain's immigrants.
williemacdonald72 Whats the difference?
Drom Assault If thats the way you want to go, Spanish in the UK are taking jobs away from the British.
Drom Assault Eh? But most British expats are retired so when they live in Spain they don’t work, they live off their pensions. There isn’t any Spaniards watching them from afar thinking ‘he’s taking my job, watering them flowers all by himself’,
Drom Assault zUnlike Spaniards in the UK, they go over there to chop onions and fry eggs, I could do that, taking my jobs
Drom Assault Do you think I should go back? My Spanish wife says I should stay. My Spanish in-laws want me to stay. EU policy says I can stay and this will not change after Brexit, supposedly lol. Why should I listen to you?
Brexpats? Those ppl are IMMIGRANTS!!!
There is no mystery. Brits will be treated in the same way EU citizens will be treated in the UK. Spain is part of the EU. It's a question of reciprocity.
You wouldn't believe the sheer extent of delusion in the UK atm
These beauties where against foreigners coming to the UK to work but want to be allowed to live in Spain not working and enjoying healthcare...
@ It was not bravery, it was ignorance. When that lady asks them at 2.30 if they can explain what the implications of the withdraw agreement are they just laugh. They are as manipulated by the media as many Brits in the UK. And after watching in the video that man reading the Daily Mail I do not wonder why...
@ Spanish pensionists living in the UK must be a very few
You get what you voted for, stop complaining
Give up your British winter heating allowance, look how much the UK government could save.
They are not ex pats. They are EMIGRANTS.
Once a week shopping wow Spain economy will really feel the brunt lol
@bucketsandshims that about sums it up. Though Ireland has little interest in following little england in leaving the EU. Assuming you meant Northern Ireland
They are immigrants not brexpats, who have not assimilated.
Speak spanish. Under our law it's MUST speak spanish
Well said Sir, I lived in the Netherlands and had no problem learning Dutch, you must learn the Language in the Country that you live
Immigrants in a foreigner country that don't mixe up with the natives.
Look at all the toxic comments from the low-life in Britain. The British in Spain will never go back to Britain as we get on so well with the Spanish and the other Europeans here . Britain is like a police state and full of toxic brexiters.
Guiris, we want you to stay, but integrate a bit more!!!
@supernumery you are an equal part of the UK, that's why you can vote in elections.the EU referendum was a UK referendum not a referendum from the point of view of each individual country and as there are only 5.5 million Scottish voters and 55 million voters in the other parts of the country that means that is the percentage of influence you have on the overall result. not everyone in Scotland voted remain it was 62 percent or 3.4 million so are you claiming your vote should have been worth 2 or 3 times the vote in the rest of the country so your vote would have overtaken the 17.4 million out vote.
You moved abroad, you can always move back.
Leave Means Leave! Right?
No, no. You see it's just EU citizens that need to leave the UK while the UK leaves the EU. Those brits living near you, the ones that give you the evil eye when you dare speak Spanish, they'll just stay where they are. They'll demand Spain cares for them and pays their medical bills, but they'll never give up being british
@@wolfetone2012 They can be British in the UK after they are evicted as third country (non EU) persons.
There are places in the Costa de Sol if you don't speak English you not wanted ! so it's about time !
We purchased an apartment in 2002 for cash and go backwards and forwards to Spain as we please as we live 10 minutes from Stansted Airport, we would never sell up and live in Spain we avoid July and August, and visit in January May June September for 3 weeks at a time so we have the best of both worlds, people who have sold up to live in Spain are idiots....and we voted to stay in the EU
JUST IMMIGRANTS LIKE EVERYONE ELSE !!!!
I used to have a condo in Fuengirola.
I enjoyed my stay there but there is little integration between the locals and the expats.
We Irish integrated a bit better because to attend Sunday religious service we simply joined the natives in their local Catholic church for one thing.
Each nationality tends to cluster together - mostly around their bars; English bars for the English, Irish bars for the Irish and so on.
There will be many EU citizens living in Britain after Brexit as there will be British citizens living in Spain so some quid pro quo arrangement will have to be made.
I'm told that many Brits flew home to vote for Brexit and then flew back quickly to their sun-drenched balconies; strange behaviour if it happened.
It will be sorted out I hope - don't worry, be happy.
Spain also wants Gibraltar.
All the nasty comments on here about people moving to Spain. Show me a hanger on who is getting free house, food and benefits in Spain that has come from the UK. You may find some of the UK people in Spain moaning but they are self supporting and help local businesses.
Yes, but they can easily be replaced by a German, Swede, Frenchman, etc
Expats no they are immigrants
They're immigrants not ex pats or brexpats.
"Brexprats" Maybe!
They are afraid and ashamed of the word immigrant because they used it to insult and humiliate other nations ! They are just stupid racists !
As the great forest gump said "stupid is as stupid does"
Not Ex-Pats, not Brex-Pats, just immigrants.
How many of them have learnt the language?
Having the opportunity to move overseas is a privilege and not all people who want to do this can.
Moving overseas should always be seen as a risk, as immigration laws and boarders do change.
If these people are not pertinent residence or citizens of Spain then they run a risk of obtaining this status or being deported post brexit.
They are current in ‘privilege’ territory not ‘right’.
Tonnes of you POM’s down here don’t always have the right to remain and back you go. Rules are rules and can and do change.
People fortunate enough to live in Sunny Spain need to prep for this. Learn the language and customs and become Spanish residents.
If you can’t then that’s just life. Visas get cancelled on people down here all the time not just from the UK. Families very happy just have to leave. Protect your rights in the county you live in don’t depend on another country to support you there.
Un momento, quieren tener la nacionalidad espanola sin hablar NI papa de espanol??? Estan siempre borrachos o que les pasa?
En su pais tienes qye pasar un test de ingles para aplicar para la nacionalidad.
exactamente.
so are they evicted already?
They're immigrants if they like it or not.
all you get Spanish naturalization and passport forget little Britain
You have have both Spanish and UK passports. I do, just contact your nearest Spanish embassy and they will guide you on how to get and maintain both nationalities at the same time.
This is only if you born with dual nationality. Legally in Spain you cannot retain your old nationality if you apply for Spanish Nationality. Of course you don't lose your British or whatever since it is yours by birth but you are in theory required to return your old passport and such. You can have your Spanish passport cancelled and Spanish nationality revoked if you abuse the system.
That works for Spanish people wanting British nationality. They go through the process, pay over 1,500 quid and afterwards they only have to declare at the Spanish Embassy that they do not wish to lose their Spanish nationality. BUT for British, they do need to renounce their British nationality in order to become Spanish nationals. There is no dual nationality agreement between Spain and the UK. They would actually lose their British nationality, permanently. For me, they can go straight back home, they cost more in medical expenses than what they give to Spain. They tend to live in little Britains with mini markets, pubs and fish&chips owned by other British immigrants, and laugh at Spaniards serving them when they speak English. Hypocrites.
If there is an agreement about they being allowed (I repeat, being allowed) to stay in Spain without having to become Spanish nationals, it would not cover their moving to other EU members, as they would have lost their freedom of movement. If they become Spanish, then they would retain that right, but they would have to be treated as no national in the UK, so visa or whatever and the same limitations as EU immigrants.
Yes after 10 years living in spain.....
British consul for Andalucia?? Haha what the hell is that? Hilarious
Im Spanish been UK 25 years now on top of working & paying in & tax I had to register for permeant status , so.. so must you !
In the Republic of Ireland, where we have the largest number of UK citizens living outside of the UK itself, this has not become any discourse in the Brexit scenario, but what is happening is a huge increase in applications for Irish passports.
The irony is many of them VOTED TO LEAVE, oh the irony
Proud of their ignorance
You chose to go to Spain now get on with it
The little music with the guitar in any report about Spain is TIIIIIIIIRIIIIIING!!! MESSIEURS LES FRANÇAIS EST-CE QUE LES ESPAGNOLS METTENT DE L’ACCORDÉON SUR TOUS LES REPORTAGES À PROPOS DE LA FRANCE ? 😒😒😒😒
I didn't notice it at first, but you're so right!! hahaha
You got to love folks who voted for BREXIT and now find themselves without healthcare drinking Gin and Tonics. Sometimes the Anglos make little sense to me.
I find these peoples attitude incomprehensible, they leave the UK for various reasons but mostly because it isn't good enough for them, but still want a say in the country they left.
Decades aboard. Get a french Spanish passport
Karma for British people voting brexit
They should have applied for permanent resident status asap after the Brexit vote passed otherwise, sod’em.
They have no say in my future. They live in Spain
Not at all, Spanish laws does not imposed another country's citizen to drop his or her birth nationality if they seek permanent residency or naturalisation.
You can be spainish and Australian dual nationality.
You are misleading the audiences.
Mijas is to piss in portuguese.
I can speak in Portuguese. How do I piss in Portuguese?
the other mans grass is always greener
The sun shines brighter on the other side
they made their beds now theyre gonna have to lye on them 😎
Only invest what you are willing to lose when it comes to buying property overseas.
what is the present situation, what has changed?
I don't think, they have to worry much too, but of course they would have to have a valid health insurance outside the NHS, as NHS coverage is very likely to end in the EU on March 29th.
that's going to be a deal breaker for many expats/immigrants, who won't be able or want to buy private insurance. AND, given that the English brexitards don't want to give the Spanish insurance, or even make the process very easy to stay, why the hell should Spain?
@William Doubleu oi, tell me more ...what deal? Spain is Eu -member. :)
@William Doubleu The health card from Spain is not valid in the UK. Since Spain does not actually have one. It is done at Provincial level and you need an EU Health card to be issued. Once you start working there though you are required to pay for the NHS. Pensioners are covered only until March 29 right now.
@William Doubleu Most of the Spanish and other EU immigrants in the UK do work and pay taxes, so they have direct right to the NHS. They are not being given any gift, they pay for it. 3/4 of the British immigrants in the EU are retired, with a far more expensive health cost because of their age related problems. It makes perfect sense that they are not covered by their host countries. It will have to be the UK to continue covering their health bills when the EU members claim them back.
They have nothing to worry about.
keep dreaming!
An easy solution to your Brexit dilemma. Simply sell all your real estate assets in Spain and move to Gibraltar. No more worries, right.?
A massive selling would down the prize
Or at the North Pole ... or just go to hell !
Well I think they will be in for a rude awakening because within the EU they can get health care in Spain without paying for insurance but now they will need to pay for it and they will lose other privileges as well plus will likely need to pay for some sort of visa etc.
The words spreads out from british immigrants that Spanish government needed these peoples due that they lives there???😂
they had a choice to stay were they were born, but most couldn't get out of our country quick enough...so why are they panicking now? mb its because there social security benifits will stop. cold weather payments, etc...
Ex Patriots , they chose to leave the UK ??
Am I right thinking they all voted for brexit?
What language they speak? Anglish?
Where they work?
Adam Smith British pubs
@@kotare86 Soon such pubs will be forced to close because they can't get English staff because such staff can only stay 90 days.
At least with the english inmigrants we can say more people speak a decent english in Spain. And and as more british come, population in Spain speaks a worst spanish each day. Funny.
they can stay if they like it might cost them more so what thier choice. Spanish don't want them really they are just immigrants like all immigrants .they have a choice.
There will be no change to Brexpat status in Spain. Spain is aware that the economy would be severely damaged without Brexpats or British tourists. I have just returned from skiing in France & it's also plain to see that British tourists spend small fortunes in French ski resorts.....in fact, there are so many Brits in Val d'Isere that it gave the impression of a British resort. It's business as usual folks & a warm welcome to big spending Brits!
Dream on, it will be a rude awakening. Just like other tourists you will be only allowed to stay for 90 days per year.
Omg your garbage hasn't aged well.
4 years later : this reply didn't age well. As the other poster said, British are now allowed to spend 90 out of 180 days in the EU. As tourists, nothing more. Anything more requires a permit or a visa.
Why worried about brexit you chose to live in Spain (your choice ) you get a pension to wich you don't spend in the uk,but you want the free health care you obviously thought Spain was better than the uk so you made your life there so as far as I'm concerned your Spanish,
They can always relinquish their British citizenship and become Spanish
Sure. Because a bunch of geriatrics would love to learn a language they've never spoken in their lives. Just so they may integrate into the society which has cared for them for years
Send the police to find out who among these British immigrants living in Spain voted to leave or have fascist views against other immigrants living in the UK and send them back home ipso facto.
You are not wanted.
Immigrants
Brexmigrants
i want german nationalitie but its not so easy
you need to have lived in Germany for 8 yrs at least and you need to know German. I think there are some exceptions in some States granting Brits who've lived here for half the time the ability to apply for it, but I am not sure I did not fact check it.
Spain can want or like what it wants, but the EU decides. Not German carmakers, or French wine producers, or Spanish bar owners.
I feel bad for these people. They had no vote and it was thrust upon them.
There is another video from the same town where the British "ex-pats" admitted they voted to leave the EU. Just think about how stupid you would have to be to do such a thing! One guy voted to leave and then, after Article 50 was enacted, moved to Spain and bought a property. It's not just the ignorance that is astounding, but the sense of entitlement as well.
I think you'll find a lot 'did' have a vote and voted to leave!!? ..I know. The most stupid of immigrants!😂
They're tards!
@@thurmanmerman2720 i saw that there just plain rascist they dont want immigrants in there cuntry but its ok for them to be a immigrant in another cuntry

Please tomorrow all english and drunken english go to england, and our spanish and future worker who returned to home, we not want the english. The ireland an scots they´re well received. English racist arrogants
ENGLISH go home. Welcome to BREXIT Sir! 🇪🇺
Such bad comments about British ex pats, small towns and villages DO benefit from us brits, the Spanish will admit themselves that without the immigrants to Spain some of their businesses will fail.
They are Immigrants not 'Ex Pats' 😂 Plenty of EUROPEANS to take up residency in their place! 🇪🇺
