The Nintendo 64 was and still is an awesome console, I remember getting this on Christmas of 1998. The first two games I ever own was Pokemon Stadium 1 and The Legend Of Zelda : Ocarina Of Time. It's my favorite console of all time. :)
I have to agree , easily one of the best consoles ever IMO. Unfortunately I had no chance to have it when it came out , but I recently bought it just to play those legendary plataformers (the Banjos ,CBFD ,DK, Super Mario, etc).

I like the GameCube better, only because it has more games and better sound, graphics, and a better controller than the N64. The N64 is great though, just not great as the gamecube was in my opinion.
Born in 93 as well. I didn't get into gaming until around 2002 so I got a gamecube. Never had a N64 and actually played it yesterday for the very first time. Thinking about getting one very soon.
It funny how when he placed the N64 and the Panasonic beside each other, I immediately thought to myself "the Panasonic doesn't work, does it?", and it turned out it didn't xD On the same note, if I go to a garage sale (for lack of better word), and I see a Panasonic or Philips CD-I, I immediately become skeptic and assume the sh*t doesn't work, however, if I see an N64, SNES, or NES for that matter, I automatically assume that they are still in working order--- I dunno, maybe it's because they are cartridge based that I think that way.
PikaLink91 Even the GameCube has a better build quality than most disc based systems (though i have heard some earlier models suffered from hardware issues. Luckily, mine hasnt yet. But i do have a newer model for backup.) PS1 probably had it the worst though. You literally have to turn the damn thing with the disc side facing down so it will spin properly. Great console..cheap design :/
It's not about the quantity... but the quality of the games matter! I both had the PS1 and the N64 and they both have the same amount of GOOD games, if you skip all the bad/weak games. I had fun with both consoles at the time, but I think the N64 was clearly superior because it brought a lot of new things to the table.
The reason N64 was not nearly as succesful as the PS1 was because it refused the move with the times, the things that made it bad then make it good now ironically but still I just pointed out that it didn't have much games and many people even try to collect the whole library, I know that the ones that were were great but that's not what I meant, I didn't say anything about the quality of the games but their quantity because that was the topic of converaation
Slavko Gelo I understand what you say and i respect your opinion. But still the N64 didn't have so few games after all. And some games you could play for weeks/months and didn't get bored with. Still part of quantity has to be quality based (or how long you can play a single game). For example do you know ho much games were released on the first atari (even before the nes system)? They were releasing does games like madness. :P But very few were good. Same thing can be said for the complete ps1 library. Overall it would be kind of disappointing, but if you only look at the good ones or the games that are still oke, than it would break even with the N64. Also you mentioned success... it's kind of hard to decide which one was more successful. You would've to ask yourself if total sales of the console is enough or that you've to look in retrospect which console made more impact on gaming overall. Like you said the N64 had a lot of things keeping it back from becoming a super selling machine. It was expensive, the games were always a lot more expensive (some even 80-90 euro's... euro weren't there yet but i recount it in euro's), the library was indeed a lot smaller than the ps1 library (almost every console has a smaller library than the ps1... i think) and one of the most important things: the ps1 or playstation could easily be hard modded. It was one of the first consoles everybody (or at least a lot of people/casual gamers) hard modded back in the days. It's the same with the success of the wii. Part of it is that it attracted casual gamers, but I think a bigger part of it was because it's one of the easiest consoles to softmod and that it was dirt cheap so low risk. If you can mod a console... and be able to have a lot of games for it... it's way more interesting than a console that is nearly impossible to hard/softmod and that has games that are very expensive like the N64. I know... I know the N64 also can have an add-on and is able to play copied games. But nobody had such a thing at that time. Sorry if my answer became a bit long... but i wanted to explain that success is something hard to measure. Same thing can be said for the DS btw...
The biggest downfalls were the 4kb Texture memory, high-latency rambus memory, and shoddy control-stick that breaks more often than the original 360 Red Ringed.
I remember the day this was released ... My local independent game shop rented these out for £20 for 3 days .. Including 5 games , 2 controllers and delivery/ pick up. I also remember spending the entire weekend playing Goldeneye at my best friends house .... His mum said we smelt like Onions ...LOL classic
If only they had decided to sacrifice loading times for CDs. Imagine what they could have done with games like Ocarina, Majora, or Jet Force Gemini if they had the power of CDs. Oh well.
I love the Nintendo 64 my favorite console of all time my favorite game for Nintendo 64 is Super Mario 64 I play mine all the time and I love it Nintendo 64 is my 1st favorite Nintendo console I like it better than PlayStation cause the Nintendo 64 has better graphics than PlayStation the Nintendo 64 is my favorite game system of all time
Gaming was 100% better back then. After that it went down the toilet. Games are the same for every system these days. And it's gotten worse thanks to CoD.
I remember being in Year 4 so I was 8 years old and me and my freinds we're talking about video games. He and everyone else had the PS2 (wow so many years when the PS2 was the system to own) anyway him and another friend we talking about Jak 2 and I didn't have the system, just the 64. They we're trying to get me jealous because I didn'y have the PS2 yet and I was talking about all the brilliant games I had for it and they just laughted and I was like 'Shut your tits, come round and play it' Okay I didn't say tits but you get the idea. We played Goldeneye, Mario 64, Perfect Dark, 1080 and Majora's Mask and his hands were glued to the controller, he couldn't put it down he was that addicted to the games. Not so shitty now is it? Bunch of jerks.
Lol,same here.My friends were always loving the games for the graphics not gameplay too much so i got them to play n64 on emulator with me and they were loving it.Some people just dont know what good hardware means and they act like they have the best stuff in the world, lol
i don't get why so many people think that goldeneye is a good looking game. the graphic is terrible compared to games like tomb raider or metal gear solid
I've had both Playstation 1 and the n64. I liked the n64 for multiplayer racing, wwf, and FPS games while I played Final Fantasy and Resident Evil on Playstation. It seemed like PS was my "solo play" console(resident evil, metal gear solid, final fantasy, ect) and my N64 was my multiplayer console(Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, Mario Kart 64, WWF Attitude, Wrestlemania 2000, No Mercy, ect)
I have an N64, loved this console, people moan about the price of games and consoles today, go back to the 90's and late 80's, this stuff was mega expensive, I still have a lot of my retro stuff, but did sell some of it, but still have a massive collection, I could have paid my mortgage off years ago if it wasn't for gaming :)
Still got my N64. Works perfectly. Got it for Christmas '97, still one of my favorite presents ever. Maybe this year Nintendo will do a N64 Classic, would be interesting to see the chassis shrunken down.
I had the black and the clear blue models of the N64 growing up, extremely durable and fun console. Mario 64, Starfox 64, DK Racing etc - fantastic library of games.
It's an expansion port. There was going to be a hard drive add on for it at one point that would connect to the N64 there, but it got scrapped. Zelda Ocarina of Time was planned for the drive but was reworked to fit on a cartridge instead.
I have the N64. It was my first home game console actually. And the one I have is my original one. It's seen a lot of tough times; soda spills and such, but it does still work. Even have the expansion module.
Very true. Matter of fact I found a N64 at a Savers for $10. Problem was it looked like it had been sitting in someone's basement for the last 15 years, Dust was literally falling out of the vent holes.... But I bought it anyway. Took it apart and gave it a good cleaning (even found a colony of dead cockroaches in it) Despite all the abuse booted it up and it worked! Just like it did in 1997. These systems are tanks!
The N64 has the most overlooked library of all time. Almost all N64 newcomers or even people who grew up in that generation think the N64 only has 4 good games on it. Games on N64 worth owning: Conker's Bad Fur Day Ogre Battle 64 : Person of Lordly Caliber Paper Mario Perfect Dark Jet Force Gemini Space Station Silicon Valley Doom 64 Body Harvest Super Smash Bros Jet Force Gemini Harvest Moon Sin and Punishment Goldeneye Legend of Zelda : Majora's Mask Legend of Zelda : Ocarina of Time Tetrisphere Pokémon Puzzle League Pokémon Stadium 1 and 2 Killer Instinct Gold Fighter's Destiny Super Mario 64 Banjo-Kazooie Banjo-Tooie World Driver Championship Wave Race 64 Excitebike 64 F-Zero X Star Wars : Rogue Squadron Star Wars : Battle for Naboo Robotron 64 Star Fox 64 Turok 1, 2 and 3 Bomberman 64 Quake Forsaken Castlevania: Legacy of Darkness Kirby 64 The World is Not Enough Mario Tennis Mario Golf Donkey Kong 64 Blast Corps Mario Kart 64 Mischeif Makers Mystical Ninja Star Soldier: Vanishing Earth Hybrid Heaven I'm sure I'm still missing some gems. But there is plenty of good games to play on the 64. I like the N64 for the same reason why I like the Sega Dreamcast.
This is the first ever console I bought with my own money - and I don't regret it! I'm 14 and never played it when it was current :'( I game through the night with the likes of Super Mario and Zelda - very nice :')
One thing Mark is right about is how that "32/64 bit" era was the last to have unique, distinctive exclusivity between consoles. You wanted great party/multiplayer games (that also had solid single player) - you got a Nintendo 64. You wanted an edgier and mature single-player experience you got a Playstation. If arcade games and shooters were your calling - a Sega Saturn was your choice. The lines since then have blurred - stylistically and subjectively things cross over now.
the wii is different and the most memorable of the 7th generation. it did things unlike the other 2 consoles and its honestly my favorite. no online fees for the games you play online, mario galaxy (aka my favorite game ever made) resides there, as well as an amazing wealth of other nintendo and sega games that are spectacular, both as console releases and downloads. its the first system ever that truly innovated backwards compatibility throughout 4 generations of games.
I loved my N64. Doom 64 was the first game I owned for it, and still works after 15 years. The only thing I didn't like about Doom64 was it didn't have multiplayer.
My uncle gave my older brother a N64 ages ago and I still have it to this day, the analog stick is a little stiff on both the controllers but I have no problems playing 007 goldeneye.
I still got my Nintendo 64 since Christmas Eve, 1997. I got GoldenEye 007 on Christmas Day. GoldenEye 007 is dear to my heart, but I didn't get a Mario game for it. It felt like going to a Disney theme park without Mickey being there. I eventually got Super Mario 64, after the system's demise.
I've always wondered why I always liked old fashioned games like these, mainly because I had these, but all broke down. I just look back and always remember the great times with these odd consoles
I never knew the Nintendo 64 had memory cards that could be plugged into the controller. However, I did know that you could plug in a rumble pack into the controller and I have one and I also have a transfer adapter that plugs into the controller that allows for the use of GameBoy games in the Nintendo 64(I never could figure out how to use it though. Maybe you might know how to use it and know what games it works with.). I like the N64 for a lot of the same reasons you do. It is very simple, trusty, reliable, and has easy to learn controls. Since it is cartridge based, there are no mechanical moving parts to fail and no CDs to get scratched. The problem with all the disc-based gaming systems is that the CDs scratch so easily, game cartridges however, provide you with reliable gaming and don't scratch at all. Video games in the form of a cartridge are really made to last for years without trouble. The gaming systems they have nowadays I don't like. They have very complicated controls that are difficult to learn and a lot of the game titles for them seem ridiculous and they are all the same( First-person shooter) I really like your videos by the way. They are very professional in appearance.
And both my Mega Drive (sega genesis in the US, it seems) and my original PS still work today. The PS3 and XBox 360 always seem to have a lifespan of 3-5 years without requiring fixing or maintenance
One small thing I liked about the N64 was the screen effects on certain games when you hit the reset button. There are probably a few videos showing them on RUclips, but if there are, I seem to be using the wrong combination of keywords 'cause I can't find 'em.
Those were the days. Three different consoles, three unique experiences. The N64 had carts and Nintendo, Rare, and stuff just not found elsewhere due to the cartridge format. The PlayStation has the third party companies, and a ton of JRPG’s. Just a little bit of everything. The Saturn had awesome import games, and was powerhouse in the 2D department. Saga games were great, 2D fighters and my favorite genre, shooters, or space shooters, whatever you want to call them rocked my tiny little world. Those were the days.
I would say that you most likely like the Nintenndo 64 because it holds a special place in your heart, probably because it was your first console, or you played it when you were a kid. And I don't play COD games I've only played a demo of one COD game. and besides I only have 1 FPS game )Battlefield 3) and Team Fortress 2 installed (Which is free to play) I was born in 1996. I mostly prefer games from 1995-2004 but I don't like most Nintendo 64 games, It was aimed at people who(To be continued)
I have the PIkachu themed N64 and Pokemon Stadium. I try to find more games online but these days, the games cost more than the system. It still works great! One of my favorite systems to date!
Home made games are still being made and can be downloaded and burn on to a disc. I think you can Google "Homebrew Dreamcast games" and you will see them.

I like the GameCube better, only because it has more games and better sound, graphics, and a better controller than the N64. The N64 is great though, just not great as the gamecube was in my opinion.
Oh cool thanks for shring your opinion. This is nintendo64ization / SegaSaturnGamer48 do you remember me?
Oh yea, I remember you. Sup?
Born in 93 as well. I didn't get into gaming until around 2002 so I got a gamecube. Never had a N64 and actually played it yesterday for the very first time. Thinking about getting one very soon.
It funny how when he placed the N64 and the Panasonic beside each other, I immediately thought to myself "the Panasonic doesn't work, does it?", and it turned out it didn't xD
On the same note, if I go to a garage sale (for lack of better word), and I see a Panasonic or Philips CD-I, I immediately become skeptic and assume the sh*t doesn't work, however, if I see an N64, SNES, or NES for that matter, I automatically assume that they are still in working order--- I dunno, maybe it's because they are cartridge based that I think that way.
Or the fact that the NES, SNES and N64 have a better build quality than the CD-I ? haha
Perhaps :-) I think that was the point I was trying to make^^'
PikaLink91 Even the GameCube has a better build quality than most disc based systems (though i have heard some earlier models suffered from hardware issues. Luckily, mine hasnt yet. But i do have a newer model for backup.) PS1 probably had it the worst though. You literally have to turn the damn thing with the disc side facing down so it will spin properly. Great console..cheap design :/
well anything with a disc has more internal moving parts. and laser that read the disc deff dosent last forever...
No S Sherlock
3:30 it does not have a massive library, only about 200-240 games, much less than other systems of both that time and generally
its not like we try to get all the games.
It also has LEGEND OF ZELDA MAJORAS MASK(AKA BEN
I bought one for ten bucks at a market, along with rougue squadron! Got it last year and it still works like a charm!
The biggest downfalls were the 4kb Texture memory, high-latency rambus memory, and shoddy control-stick that breaks more often than the original 360 Red Ringed.
you can buy a controller with a normal gamecube like control stick just look it up.
Yes. but they're both expensive and overly-sensitive making playing games that require the control-stick pretty much impossible.
i don't consider $2 expensive
2$ where?
Last I checked they were 500$ a pop.
look up Redesigned Joystick for Nintendo 64 Controller Repair N64 Thumbstick Pad i could only find $10 and up but i have seen less
Great system! Great for multiplayer gaming, childhood memories, and game night
If only they had decided to sacrifice loading times for CDs. Imagine what they could have done with games like Ocarina, Majora, or Jet Force Gemini if they had the power of CDs. Oh well.
They would be a pixelated mess like ps1 games.
dank meme central There were tons of excellent looking PS1 games.
Kalilu Jawara With the right type of game it looked ok, but the n64 looked much, much better.
Kalilu Jawara You don't have to imagine with some games, OOT and Majora's Mask 3DS remakes look amazing compared to the N64 versions.
ccricers The funny part is that the 3DS uses the modern equivalent of cartridges.
legendary console say what you want about it, it had the best games ever....
i was born in 97, and had one in 99, best console of mu life to this day, loved goldeneye and starwars and sonic, love you old nintendo :)
I love this system! My top three favorite N64 games:
1) Goldeneye
2) Ocarina of Time
3) Super Mario 64
They should rerelease the n64 maybe n65. With today's microchip technology so much could be squished on a cartridge. Plus the n64 is just awesome.
u sir r a genius
Do you know what 64 stands for?
It's stands for the number of "bits" - 64
I realize this video is old, but fun tip; the following are all the same video cable: SNES, N64 & Gamecube.
I love the Nintendo 64 my favorite console of all time my favorite game for Nintendo 64 is Super Mario 64 I play mine all the time and I love it Nintendo 64 is my 1st favorite Nintendo console I like it better than PlayStation cause the Nintendo 64 has better graphics than PlayStation the Nintendo 64 is my favorite game system of all time
zpushy633 ZL goldeneye is my favorite game on the n64
Flying V that's awesome
zpushy633 ZL what's your favorite n64 game
Flying V Super Mario 64
Some punctuation would be nice.
N64 is better then the Wii u
PlayStation 1 is better then both the 2.
at 5:00
I couldn't agree with you more. I'd hope to see more of that in the future.
Gaming was 100% better back then. After that it went down the toilet. Games are the same for every system these days. And it's gotten worse thanks to CoD.
probably the greatest console ever
Overated like all Nintendo systems.
Both great consoles. I didn't even know they were still making games for the Dreamcast! Great review. I love the last line lol
I had a load more games
Lol,same here.My friends were always loving the games for the graphics not gameplay too much so i got them to play n64 on emulator with me and they were loving it.Some people just dont know what good hardware means and they act like they have the best stuff in the world, lol
...and that man's name was Albert Einstein
At least they didn't watch cartoons for 8 year old girls.
i don't get why so many people think that goldeneye is a good looking game. the graphic is terrible compared to games like tomb raider or metal gear solid
Why are you talking about the graphics of a 15 year old game? Its about gameplay and Goldeneye had the best gameplay of a fps of its time.
Tomb Raider and Metal Gear Solid look like jaggy shit compared to Goldeneye.
ITS A 15 YEAR OLD GAME WTF DO YOU EXPECT AMAZING GRAPHICS.
***** i know that but games like tomb raider or Metal gear solid were released in the same period of time
It was a couple years after which the graphics slightly improved and most of the games were like that in 1996
I've had both Playstation 1 and the n64. I liked the n64 for multiplayer racing, wwf, and FPS games while I played Final Fantasy and Resident Evil on Playstation. It seemed like PS was my "solo play" console(resident evil, metal gear solid, final fantasy, ect) and my N64 was my multiplayer console(Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, Mario Kart 64, WWF Attitude, Wrestlemania 2000, No Mercy, ect)
fuck the ps4 and xbox one im buying an N64
+Fox gaming one of the best things ive seen someone say in this generation
+Balazs Nagy Gonna ask for an N64 for christmas because they're just too good :3
+Fox gaming FUCK YEAH!
bought mine yesterday, defenitly not dissapointed :D
+Fox gaming You've made a bad choice.
WWF NO MERCY, GOLDENEYE 007, SUPER MARIO 64, ZELDA, AND SUPER SMASH BROS IS ALL I PLAYED ON NINTENO 64 HAHA ... MAN THOSE WERE TO GOOD OL' DAYS SMH
Mario Kart
Boooooooooooommmmeerr...
Dude, stop yelling.
i bought one of these suckers at goodwill for 11$, with mario 64, and ocarina of time, and it works. Yay!
they can survive atomic blasts
The last great Nintendo console even with its flaws and being behind the times.
n64 > psx
*****
to me n64=psx
mrcallese You win.
mrcallese
Contrary to popular belief, it's not PSX, it's just the Playstation.
yeah thats tru mine just says playstation on it hahaha
I have an N64, loved this console, people moan about the price of games and consoles today, go back to the 90's and late 80's, this stuff was mega expensive, I still have a lot of my retro stuff, but did sell some of it, but still have a massive collection, I could have paid my mortgage off years ago if it wasn't for gaming :)
My first game console I ever played and got to own back in the day. Got mine Christmas 1999. :)
Still got my N64. Works perfectly. Got it for Christmas '97, still one of my favorite presents ever. Maybe this year Nintendo will do a N64 Classic, would be interesting to see the chassis shrunken down.
Cartridge based cosonles
are almost eternal. Very reliable, tuff, no scratches.
I love em
Just ordered mine together with Goldeneye. Can't Wait
I had the black and the clear blue models of the N64 growing up, extremely durable and fun console. Mario 64, Starfox 64, DK Racing etc - fantastic library of games.
2021 and CGR is still awesome!
I really loved this channel ❤
15 year with my n64, only one problem with it, and never broke up again. Still works today
Games on N64 worth owning:
Conker's Bad Fur Day
Ogre Battle 64 : Person of Lordly Caliber
Paper Mario
Perfect Dark
Jet Force Gemini
Space Station Silicon Valley
Doom 64
Body Harvest
Super Smash Bros
Jet Force Gemini
Harvest Moon
Sin and Punishment
Goldeneye
Legend of Zelda : Majora's Mask
Legend of Zelda : Ocarina of Time
Tetrisphere
Pokémon Puzzle League
Pokémon Stadium 1 and 2
Killer Instinct Gold
Fighter's Destiny
Super Mario 64
Banjo-Kazooie
Banjo-Tooie
World Driver Championship
Wave Race 64
Excitebike 64
F-Zero X
Star Wars : Rogue Squadron
Star Wars : Battle for Naboo
Robotron 64
Star Fox 64
Turok 1, 2 and 3
Bomberman 64
Quake
Forsaken
Castlevania: Legacy of Darkness
Kirby 64
The World is Not Enough
Mario Tennis
Mario Golf
Donkey Kong 64
Blast Corps
Mario Kart 64
Mischeif Makers
Mystical Ninja
Star Soldier: Vanishing Earth
Hybrid Heaven
I'm sure I'm still missing some gems.
I loved this channel even more than AVGN.
Loved the N64..Easily among my favorite consoles ever along with the Super NES & Xbox 360. I always preferred the durability of cartridges over discs.
was released the year i was born :3 and my brother had one in 96 and we still have it ... :3
the wii is different and the most memorable of the 7th generation. it did things unlike the other 2 consoles and its honestly my favorite. no online fees for the games you play online, mario galaxy (aka my favorite game ever made) resides there, as well as an amazing wealth of other nintendo and sega games that are spectacular, both as console releases and downloads. its the first system ever that truly innovated backwards compatibility throughout 4 generations of games.
Mark, you didn't talk about the control deck, the coolest part of all, you can hook up a disc drive to your nintendo 64.
I loved my N64. Doom 64 was the first game I owned for it, and still works after 15 years. The only thing I didn't like about Doom64 was it didn't have multiplayer.
Hey (80s Comics) I got starlink (for Nintendo switch exclusive content) and star fox 64 3ds remake 😁👌
I still have mine, love playing it too.
Couldn't of said it any better. New days suck, Old days are GOLDEN. Long live the 90's
And both my Mega Drive (sega genesis in the US, it seems) and my original PS still work today. The PS3 and XBox 360 always seem to have a lifespan of 3-5 years without requiring fixing or maintenance
***** I couldn't agree anymore. Back in the day in the 90's videogame producers were very original in creating new videogames.
***** Hell, then just buy one. The games are just as good now as they were then. Nothing has changed.
MrRebelutionary Correction, game design has deteorated while graphics had an amazing leap in quality. Still, I prefer good game design
One small thing I liked about the N64 was the screen effects on certain games when you hit the reset button. There are probably a few videos showing them on RUclips, but if there are, I seem to be using the wrong combination of keywords 'cause I can't find 'em.
who does not love n64 if you don't you have been under a rock for 100 years
Those were the days.
Still the best Video game channel EVER!!!
My friend just gave me his extra N64 and I am SO EXCITED.
Ohh yeah I've heard of the N64DD, didn't realize that's all it was for! Fascinating. Thanks for the tip!
I'm working to get this console in my collection, Wish me luck!
I grew up with ps1/ps2 and gamecube
I bought a n64 today and i now realize what i missed all these years :')
I got one this Christmas+ Banjo Kazooie!!!
I remember my dad bought us the 64 for Christmas at Toys R Us.. first game we had was Mario Party 1... oh the memories...
I miss my childhood. CGR, AVGN, Screwattack, GT Countdown
it'll never be the same
