Hi, I want to thank you for explaining the pauses so clearly which helped me understand a mistake I was doing for years. I have been trying to imitate cue action of Lee(My Fav), and Murphy for years with pause at back which ruin my cue action and makes me couldn’t cue straight. I tried your cue action today and can follow through better and understand what I was doing wrong. I was forcing myself in doing what was not suitable for me. Thx and will practise more

I've just started playing league snooker and am looking to improve my consistency. Found this very useful, thanks! Hoping I can achieve that 83 break like the comment below (my current highest is 62 from from quite a few years back now!)
Aah!!! What I wouldn't give to play just one shot as perfectly as you do!!! That frustration just reminds me of that railway station ghost from the movie 'Ghost', who feels similarly for just one smoke.
Thanks so much Steve, your videos are really helping me out a lot! I am one of the only girls who plays at my local club and sometimes it's hard to find someone who is willing to practice with me or coach me, so these videos are a great help. I hope you will gain more subscribers in the future! :-)
Hi Steve - some grest points in there ! If you watch Anthony McGill's vid on cue action he talks about having three pauses in the action - i used to have no pause at the end of the backswing and i introduced one and ita been a gamechanger for me - i guess its about what feels right for individual - i used to have no pause at the end of the feathers and introduced one! Its been a real change! Keep up the great work mate!
Hi Chris. Thanks again for the positive comments. Yes, I have seen Anthony's McGill's video on the pauses. Really good video. As I say in this video, it's about finding out what best works for a player. You're getting on great with a pause at the end of your backswing, so don't stop doing that.
One question regarding the neck/head position. If you were to stand up from a stance position without moving anything from the waist up, would your neck and head be pointing upwards at almost a 45 degree angle?
In Steve we have a world class snooker coach for free!!! I hope you make a quid out of this Steve, you thoroughly deserve to! Even I get clarity when I watch your videos and that's saying something 😋
Just had a great session practising at my local club. I believe that now that I am hitting from the elbow and employing a second pause as you advocate that this will promote a better chance of hitting through the ball? Thanks again.
Hi Des! Yeah you're exactly right. Everything I talk about in my videos all adds up to an incremental improvement in lots of different areas, leading to higher consistency.
help... my head position is different while standing but when i am down my head is abit facing towards 1 o clock and line would look offline. feels like i sight with right eye while standing but when down i use left eye how do i fix this problem? tnx
I love your videos and have watched most of them. Great information, analysis and camera angles which help demonstrating what you are trying to explain. I'm very detail oriented and I like that. However, you contradicted yourself in a couple of videos. For example, in this video you are saying to hit from the elbow while In a lot of videos, you show how you drop your elbow in your delivery. I myself drop the elbow as I found it works best for my cue action. I used to throw my upper arm and elbow when I am hit from the elbow.
Hi! Thanks a lot for watching the videos. I really appreciate your support 🙂 I think whenever I talk about dropping the elbow, I'm very careful to talk about it happening AFTER the delivery. For a lot of players, they don't use a very long backswing, and then hit by purely using elbow drop, and that's not what good players are going. So hitting from the elbow.... AND THEN... dropping the elbow is acceptable and a technique used by a lot of players. What I'm trying to get across in a generic video, is that you don't want to hit using elbow drop. You hit from the elbow, and then drop it AFTER the strike (if that's you're natural tendency).
@@BartonSnooker I agree...I had that problem as well. Of all the different elements of technique and cue action, in my humble opinion and due to the difficulties I have experienced, I find that the grip and how it works with cue delivery is the most important. Most professionals like Steve Davis (whom I followed his advice religiously) and Sean Murphy, who are benchmarks as far as technique and cue action, don't stress much emphasis on how it works I believe it just came natural to them and that's why they assume everyone will get it naturally. Thank you again for your great in detail analysis of these elements of technique and cue action.
today i spent hours in club and figured out that i bent my arm too much and my weight goes to my right leg and thats why my face is angling different. do you have any video on body weight? dont know what happend to my game but years ago a coach told me to flattern the cue to bed of the table and since then my body weight changed , i dont see much gap between table and cue although i feel my body weight is balanced, but i heard that lots of weight should be on left leg, but when i do that the butt of the cue comes offline to the right. can you help me? tnx
Hi, you mention at about the 8:25 mark in the video you wouldn't pull back all the way on the back swing if you don't need that much power. Makes sense. But you also state on that softer shot you would still go all the way to your check with your cue. Is this therefore needed on all shots or are there some shots where you would not go through to your chest?
Hi! You always trying to accelerate and complete the shot properly. Obviously the very nature of some shots means that you fill follow through a little bit more. On a very low power shot, you'll only pull back a bit, and then just push through the white gently, just naturally letting your grip hand come to a stop. On a very high power shot, you'll come back all the way to the V, and then again let the cue go all the way through cue ball and naturally come to a stop. On this high power shot, your grip hand would go through a bit more before it naturally stopped and relaxed. So it's just a case of accelerating through the shot properly, and letting the grip hand naturally come to a stop without suddenly stopping. Completing at the chest is a good reference point for people starting out, to make sure that they push through each shot properly. Hope that helps 🙂
@@BartonSnooker Hi, it really does help. My question was about the follow through. I understand the power dictates how far back you pull the cue on the V. Had some practice tonight even on soft shots, gentle stuns, gentle run through and forced myself to gently stop at the chest and it worked very well! It works especially well on those gentle shots where you might naturally decelerate so thanks for the great tip. It also helps keep the cue on line for long shots and feels very smooth with the slow pull back of the cue. I will continue to work on ensuring I hit the chest on every shot as I can't see where you wouldn't want to do that on atleast 99% of your shots. Thanks again.
Hi. Thank you for the video, however I'm still struggling to get the tips of my cue as close as my white as i can't judge the distance. Any tips how to do that to get that tips as closer to the white. I hope u understand the issue
Sir, what is your opinion about slip strokes/skip shots (someone suggested transitioning optimally if can - as forces proper backswing & follow thru..as well as overcomes “tightening” under pressure
At 09:44 you should have given example of Ronnie as he plays with shoulder muscle not only from elbow. Thanks. I hope you will mention this thing in your next video.
Hello there! Could you please explain to me why, in some cases for pro players it might be useful to put more distance between the tip and the cueball when addressing position? See e.g. John Higgins - he's been bridging somewhat (an inch or so?) further away from the cueball for a couple of seasons now. I'm certain he knows what he's doing; I'm just curious, why it could be beneficial to do that. More cue power? Better timing?
Is there a guide line for the length of follow through? I was just thinking should it be around 16.5 cm, the circumference of a ball? To maximise the contact with the ball? Thank you very much for sharing your meticulous observations and you explain things very well. Just need to get down to the club and practice them. All the best.
i cannot lineup shots ? when i am standing up and i put my right leg on line of aim (my foot is pointing straight ) i tried turning 45 degree too but, i always lineup object ball to the left of pocket, no matter how best i try. dont know somehow due to my right eye dominant while standing up i am already facing 1 oclock and that is why the object goes to left of pocket and my cue butt is always offline. the only way that sometimes it works is if i turn my right leg (right handed player) inwards but feels uncomfortable....i have been playing with this problem for 6 years now. cant fix it , any tip? tnx
No 5 I’m hoping will help me greatly. I’ve tried (?) to play snooker for many years and never heard about that aspect of the action!? Thanks very much. I really enjoy your clear and informative tuition and have subscribed. Keep up the good work.
Hi BartonSnooker . Kindly give positive response I wanna ask that my cue action is like mark william bcoz i m 6 feet and i place my foot cross the aim line and my elbow see like mark selby and mark william to out from top... I mean u tell about elbow angle in or out which 1 is the best ... Does it affect the game?
Great video and so much help. Thanks . But i have a question… How is it that i have seen Alex Higgins shift his whole body on shooting but yet it goes in? He seems to go against all this advice? Seriously I’m genuinely curious on how he has become a world champion by being so unorthodox.
I’ve only just discovered your channel and videos. Thanks for the great tips! Can I ask a quick question regarding step 4? Is the power of the each shot determined by how far you pull the cue back when feathering the cue? Does speed of delivery come into play or do you always deliver the cue at the same speed and just pull the cue back less for a gentle shot and further back for a heavier shot? Hope that makes sense. I think this might be where I’m going wrong as I don’t always hit my chest when cuing. I’m a div 2, club league player and trying to make more consistent 20-30 breaks (my max is only 37) but I’m so inconsistent, I can’t even get to 16 a lot of the time as I miss ones I should be getting right after potting a few really good ones with fairly good position! I always address the table the same way and my stance is always the same with a straight back leg in line with the shot so I think I’m ok there. I don’t always hold my cue in the same place so that’s my main inconsistency. Can that make a big difference to cuing straight? Can you please explain how far back to hold the cue with the right hand? Thanks, Chris.
Hello. l have a question about O'Sulivan's elbow. When he delivers the shot, he lowers his elbow very low to continue the shot. He's one of the rare players to play like this. Could you considerate this as a mistake and you would recommand to keep the elbow high ? or is it just a way to play and it doesn't affect the shot ?
Some players lower the elbow, others do not. Ronnie, Mark Williams, Shaun Murphy, Mark Selby..... All these players drop the elbow after the strike to allow them to smoothly accelerate through the ball. Ding, Trump, Robertson.... These players don't drop their elbow. It purely comes down to the player and whether or not the elbow drop is causing a problem in the striking the ball. The problems can occur when the elbow is dropping BEFORE or DURING the strike of the cue ball. So for some players it may cause a problem. But this is purely down to individual technique. So, dropping the elbow is not a problem as long as the player is hitting the ball correctly. It's very individual.
Great video Steve...When I cue I use the arrows to see if am cueing straight..How ever I do sometimes twist my wrist and the arrows are squint..Any ideas what I can be doing wrong?
Nice clear explanation for dummies like me 😊. The section after Range of Motion is named Heating from the elbow. Can this be edited out? It hurts my eyes 😭
Hi Steve when your lining up at 4.28 you aim the tip at the center of the cue ball, is the tip also at the same time aimed at the contact point on the blue ball to pot it.
Hi! I don't think of it as aiming the tip to a specific contact point. You need to aim the white onto a position on the object ball, where you think it will pot the ball. On my video 'Lining Up Shots', I explain what I am thinking about when I line up a shot. It is too difficult to pick an exact contact point on the object ball so that you pot it. All I am really judging is the overlap of the two balls so that I feel confident that the ball will go in.
Hi Steve , I have a snooker rule question for you . If I snookered someone but he has no intention to try to save it . He just hit the cue ball anyhow to the side , just to lose 4 points in case he would hit higher points colour . By the way , we only play shoot again or free ball not the new rule . My question is : can he do that & what is the penalty for that kind of action ? Please advice !
Nice work mate give us some guide on potting angles and throw of cue ball i am a begginer with a break of 20 but i still didnot recognise the basic angles and miss simple shots
Thank you for the quality video. I wonder if I should stick the cue to my rib cage while feathering. I'm currently doing it, the pivot point guides the cue and makes me feather straighter. However, when I'm actually playing the shot, my wrist will pump into my rib cage when I'm trying to cue through the cue ball, throwing my follow-through slightly off-line, especially when I'm playing power shots. Should I keep doing it?
That's a good question. I find I do the same thing on the follow though. I e my grip hits my rib cage and moves the cue off line slightly. Presumably, this can impart side on the ball especially with more power in the shot. I've watched lots of coaches videos and no one has mentioned this issue. Like you, I like my cue close to my side for control. I've tried experimenting with my stance in such a way as to move my body further a way from the cue line but lose control on the cue action.
I so much enjoy your instructions and find them extremely helpful. Well edited videos. You deserve so many thanks. HOW CAN I GET IN TOUCH WITH YOU FOR THE PURPOSE OF PRIVATE TRAINING?! I hope to receive your response.
I have significantly improved my potting since using this technique. But my positional play and ball control is poor. Any type of routine to improve this?
im a very serious player however i have some technical issue i would like to visit a snooker coach, do you mind telling me should i visit chris henry or terry geriffit ? tnx
Thank you very much for your videos, Barton, to make the balance until I hand over my chest should I concentrate on the elbow? on the forearm? or in hand?
All three! The hand needs to stay relaxed, then you feel the hit of the shot coming from the elbow. The grip and the elbow are the most important points to focus on.

How is it that i have seen Alex Higgins shift his whole body on shooting but yet it goes in?
Shame you didn’t live in Scotland pal,Would love some coaching on cueing 👌🏻
Hello. l have a question about O'Sulivan's elbow.
Is it important that the cue touches my chest? do you have any video about this?
Thanks for the great content btw.
And Also you will make tutorial about elbow angle with grip ....
Excellent no reason why I shouldn't be knocking tons in now.
Hi Steve ,
I have a snooker rule question for you .
Barton, hitting with the elbow means that there can be no movement of the shoulder, only the forearm makes the movement?
Nice work mate give us some guide on potting angles and throw of cue ball i am a begginer with a break of 20 but i still didnot recognise the basic angles and miss simple shots
Hi there. Have a look at my video on 'Lining Up Shots'. I explain here what I am looking at, and how you will see these angles better over time.
Very Nice once.
Hi, very useful tips, but I have problem on my stance, why after 1 or 2 hours playing I feel smoth ache in my both legs?
How much down pressure from cue down to bridge, light or heavy?
I so much enjoy your instructions and find them extremely helpful. Well edited videos. You deserve so many thanks.
HOW CAN I GET IN TOUCH WITH YOU FOR THE PURPOSE OF PRIVATE TRAINING?!
I hope to receive your response.
All the details are on my website or in the video description 👍
Nice explainations
I have significantly improved my potting since using this technique. But my positional play and ball control is poor. Any type of routine to improve this?
im a very serious player however i have some technical issue i would
like to visit a snooker coach, do you mind telling me should i visit
chris henry or terry geriffit ?
