    Any movement in the shoulder, can manipulate the cue off the "shot line", because the shoulder joint is a multi function joint. You do have the slightest Shoulder Movement, as you pull the cue back to the Pause. I do enjoy your videos, keep up the good work.

    Hi, I want to thank you for explaining the pauses so clearly which helped me understand a mistake I was doing for years. I have been trying to imitate cue action of Lee(My Fav), and Murphy for years with pause at back which ruin my cue action and makes me couldn’t cue straight. I tried your cue action today and can follow through better and understand what I was doing wrong. I was forcing myself in doing what was not suitable for me. Thx and will practise more

    Hi Steve - some grest points in there ! If you watch Anthony McGill's vid on cue action he talks about having three pauses in the action - i used to have no pause at the end of the backswing and i introduced one and ita been a gamechanger for me - i guess its about what feels right for individual - i used to have no pause at the end of the feathers and introduced one! Its been a real change! Keep up the great work mate!

      Hi Chris. Thanks again for the positive comments.
      Yes, I have seen Anthony's McGill's video on the pauses. Really good video.
      As I say in this video, it's about finding out what best works for a player. You're getting on great with a pause at the end of your backswing, so don't stop doing that.

    I love your videos and have watched most of them. Great information, analysis and camera angles which help demonstrating what you are trying to explain. I'm very detail oriented and I like that. However, you contradicted yourself in a couple of videos. For example, in this video you are saying to hit from the elbow while In a lot of videos, you show how you drop your elbow in your delivery. I myself drop the elbow as I found it works best for my cue action. I used to throw my upper arm and elbow when I am hit from the elbow.

    • @BartonSnooker
      @BartonSnooker  2 года назад +1

      Hi! Thanks a lot for watching the videos. I really appreciate your support 🙂
      I think whenever I talk about dropping the elbow, I'm very careful to talk about it happening AFTER the delivery.
      For a lot of players, they don't use a very long backswing, and then hit by purely using elbow drop, and that's not what good players are going.
      So hitting from the elbow.... AND THEN... dropping the elbow is acceptable and a technique used by a lot of players.
      What I'm trying to get across in a generic video, is that you don't want to hit using elbow drop. You hit from the elbow, and then drop it AFTER the strike (if that's you're natural tendency).

    • @majm1297
      @majm1297 2 года назад

      @@BartonSnooker I agree...I had that problem as well. Of all the different elements of technique and cue action, in my humble opinion and due to the difficulties I have experienced, I find that the grip and how it works with cue delivery is the most important. Most professionals like Steve Davis (whom I followed his advice religiously) and Sean Murphy, who are benchmarks as far as technique and cue action, don't stress much emphasis on how it works I believe it just came natural to them and that's why they assume everyone will get it naturally. Thank you again for your great in detail analysis of these elements of technique and cue action.

    Hi, you mention at about the 8:25 mark in the video you wouldn't pull back all the way on the back swing if you don't need that much power. Makes sense. But you also state on that softer shot you would still go all the way to your check with your cue. Is this therefore needed on all shots or are there some shots where you would not go through to your chest?

    • @BartonSnooker
      @BartonSnooker  6 лет назад +1

      Hi! You always trying to accelerate and complete the shot properly. Obviously the very nature of some shots means that you fill follow through a little bit more. On a very low power shot, you'll only pull back a bit, and then just push through the white gently, just naturally letting your grip hand come to a stop. On a very high power shot, you'll come back all the way to the V, and then again let the cue go all the way through cue ball and naturally come to a stop. On this high power shot, your grip hand would go through a bit more before it naturally stopped and relaxed. So it's just a case of accelerating through the shot properly, and letting the grip hand naturally come to a stop without suddenly stopping.
      Completing at the chest is a good reference point for people starting out, to make sure that they push through each shot properly.
      Hope that helps 🙂

    • @alecspyrou2134
      @alecspyrou2134 6 лет назад +1

      @@BartonSnooker Hi, it really does help. My question was about the follow through. I understand the power dictates how far back you pull the cue on the V.
      Had some practice tonight even on soft shots, gentle stuns, gentle run through and forced myself to gently stop at the chest and it worked very well! It works especially well on those gentle shots where you might naturally decelerate so thanks for the great tip. It also helps keep the cue on line for long shots and feels very smooth with the slow pull back of the cue.
      I will continue to work on ensuring I hit the chest on every shot as I can't see where you wouldn't want to do that on atleast 99% of your shots.
      Thanks again.

    Hello there! Could you please explain to me why, in some cases for pro players it might be useful to put more distance between the tip and the cueball when addressing position? See e.g. John Higgins - he's been bridging somewhat (an inch or so?) further away from the cueball for a couple of seasons now. I'm certain he knows what he's doing; I'm just curious, why it could be beneficial to do that. More cue power? Better timing?

    I’ve only just discovered your channel and videos. Thanks for the great tips! Can I ask a quick question regarding step 4? Is the power of the each shot determined by how far you pull the cue back when feathering the cue? Does speed of delivery come into play or do you always deliver the cue at the same speed and just pull the cue back less for a gentle shot and further back for a heavier shot? Hope that makes sense. I think this might be where I’m going wrong as I don’t always hit my chest when cuing. I’m a div 2, club league player and trying to make more consistent 20-30 breaks (my max is only 37) but I’m so inconsistent, I can’t even get to 16 a lot of the time as I miss ones I should be getting right after potting a few really good ones with fairly good position! I always address the table the same way and my stance is always the same with a straight back leg in line with the shot so I think I’m ok there. I don’t always hold my cue in the same place so that’s my main inconsistency. Can that make a big difference to cuing straight? Can you please explain how far back to hold the cue with the right hand? Thanks, Chris.

    Hello. l have a question about O'Sulivan's elbow. When he delivers the shot, he lowers his elbow very low to continue the shot. He's one of the rare players to play like this. Could you considerate this as a mistake and you would recommand to keep the elbow high ? or is it just a way to play and it doesn't affect the shot ?

    • @BartonSnooker
      @BartonSnooker  5 лет назад +1

      Some players lower the elbow, others do not.
      Ronnie, Mark Williams, Shaun Murphy, Mark Selby..... All these players drop the elbow after the strike to allow them to smoothly accelerate through the ball.
      Ding, Trump, Robertson.... These players don't drop their elbow.
      It purely comes down to the player and whether or not the elbow drop is causing a problem in the striking the ball.
      The problems can occur when the elbow is dropping BEFORE or DURING the strike of the cue ball. So for some players it may cause a problem. But this is purely down to individual technique.
      So, dropping the elbow is not a problem as long as the player is hitting the ball correctly. It's very individual.

    Hi Steve when your lining up at 4.28 you aim the tip at the center of the cue ball, is the tip also at the same time aimed at the contact point on the blue ball to pot it.

      Hi! I don't think of it as aiming the tip to a specific contact point. You need to aim the white onto a position on the object ball, where you think it will pot the ball. On my video 'Lining Up Shots', I explain what I am thinking about when I line up a shot.
      It is too difficult to pick an exact contact point on the object ball so that you pot it. All I am really judging is the overlap of the two balls so that I feel confident that the ball will go in.

    Hi Steve ,
    I have a snooker rule question for you . If I snookered someone but he has no intention to try to save it . He just hit the cue ball anyhow to the side , just to lose 4 points in case he would hit higher points colour . By the way , we only play shoot again or free ball not the new rule . My question is : can he do that & what is the penalty for that kind of action ? Please advice !

    Barton, hitting with the elbow means that there can be no movement of the shoulder, only the forearm makes the movement?

      Hi there. Have a look at my video on 'Lining Up Shots'. I explain here what I am looking at, and how you will see these angles better over time.

    Thank you for the quality video.
    I wonder if I should stick the cue to my rib cage while feathering. I'm currently doing it, the pivot point guides the cue and makes me feather straighter.
    However, when I'm actually playing the shot, my wrist will pump into my rib cage when I'm trying to cue through the cue ball, throwing my follow-through slightly off-line, especially when I'm playing power shots.
    Should I keep doing it?

      That's a good question. I find I do the same thing on the follow though. I e my grip hits my rib cage and moves the cue off line slightly. Presumably, this can impart side on the ball especially with more power in the shot.
      I've watched lots of coaches videos and no one has mentioned this issue. Like you, I like my cue close to my side for control. I've tried experimenting with my stance in such a way as to move my body further a way from the cue line but lose control on the cue action.

    Thank you very much for your videos, Barton, to make the balance until I hand over my chest should I concentrate on the elbow? on the forearm? or in hand?

    • @BartonSnooker
      @BartonSnooker  4 года назад

      All three! The hand needs to stay relaxed, then you feel the hit of the shot coming from the elbow. The grip and the elbow are the most important points to focus on.
