- One of my all time favorite Thai dishes, ever. It's salty, sweet, full of umami, spicy, and sour all at the same time. It's a great introduction to the world of Thai food.

So precious him celebrating 1,000 subscribers!!! He now has 8 million 🥹
true..
9.35M now!
9.5 now
I keep coming back to this when I want to make the soup and totally love that you are celebrating the milestone of 1,000 subscribers. Love it!
He is so humble! He has five million subscribers now in just three years, and in here he’s so grateful for 1,000. What a beautiful soul!
damn the GROWTH of this channel 🥺
No way. How the hell did he do it?😳
7.5 million now
@@ChantelleDinkel sweet msg hahahahaha
Ok, at this point I’m just binge watching all of your videos. Keep up the good work! You deserve way more subscribers.
How things have changed
cloudwave ASMR sleep sounds he got 2mil now
Kimhong Un isn’t that cool?!
@@cloudwaveASMRsleepsounds Over 4 million now.
@@nikolai3620 that’s so awesome!!!!
From 1000 subscribers too over 5 million in just 3 years. So totally awesome! I'm even getting your cookbook for Christmas this year. Plus I'm gonna make me some Tom Kha Gai, I freaking love that soup, but never made it myself 🙈
Watching this 6 years later, kind of crazy how far you've got, keep it up bro
Just watched this trying to find ideas for dinner tonight, you thanked everyone for 1,000 subscribers and now you’re looking at 10m. Bravo.
I worked at a Thai place for almost 3yrs and they'd leave the ginger in really hot water for about 5-10 sumtimes longer depending on how much, and it'd come off super easily with the knife
But in the traditional Tom kha gai which we get in thailand we don't drain the gravy and leave the veggie behind we keep everything we don't take out anything
I could believe he drained the vegetables either 😰 they’re essential to the soup.
Exactly! Never been served a Tom kha soup without the veggies left in
To be honest, if I'm the one cooking, I would strain it too. Maybe not the shallots, but I sure as hell won't be gnawing on lemon grass and galangal. It already gave whatever taste and aroma it had to the soup, why keep it? It's the same with cinnamon sticks and star anises.
I understand taking some of these out, more for the comfort of not having your guests or spouse go on a witch-hunt on some of the ingredients.
@@EntwinnedFingers yeah if his sharp knife struggled to get through that galangal then I think I’d chip a tooth trying to eat it.
Seriously...I love this soup. Had it in Thailand for the first time about 10 years ago and it's become one of my favorites. It's not complicated to make, and packs so much flavor! I 💖 "Tom-dat-guys" soup.
YES!! MY FAVORITE DISH!
Although I don't know if this is just some family but we don't strain anything out of the tom kah gai soup. Chicken skin is also very nice to add into the soup. You should try it!
One of, if not the greatest flavours ever
This soup is amazing. I've been making a different version using good quality red curry paste but this blows the other away - I actually made both and did a family taste test. Everyone (4 people) agree this is the better version. Subbed ginger for galangal, lime zest for kaffir lime leaves, and forgot to buy thai basil stalks (though I suspect that would have ended up being as hard to find at the galangal). This has the perfect balance of flavors - sweet, spicy, and simply delish
It's wonderful to see how Joshie's channel has grown. He's a big thicky boi now.
Coming back to this video after all this time. seeing how much he have progressed and evolved ! god dang !
In one year you’ve gained 419,000 subscribers dude. That’s so awesome! You definitely deserve it. I just learned about you yesterday and I subbed after the first vid because I know quality content when I see it, but you still blew my expectations out of the water with the variety of cooking content you do. Truly inspiring...
And now in August 2021 he has 4,75 million subscribers.
He must be doing something right. 👍
@@gabrieleghut1344 5.7 million seeing this come up in recommendations in Feb 2022... Seeing beginning Joshua is weird
Damn bro, you just had 1 k subs here?!, i'm impressed brother keep doing what you do your stuff looks awesome keep it up.
He has 1 million now.
4.7 million today 👏
So I have been ordering this from my local Thai restaurant here in Korea every week. Your recipe is literally everything. Now I can make it for myself. Thank you!!
I've been looking for this soup for years now! I never knew the name and researched random words and found your recipe!
This soup has plagued me but now, I'm gonna make it!
Holy shit man… you were already killing it at the 1000 mark.
You can tell the audio quality wasn’t where it is now, and camera quality is lower too, but the You was always in it.
You’re the illest there is 🙌🏽
damn i didn’t know there was a time where he was at 2k subs
Ikr
Everyone successful on RUclips started from 0 subscriber.
Ok, this is my fave soup, sooo good and easy peasy. You are the 1st one who strains their soup....hooray!! No woody, harsh lemongrass splinters. In NY there was an amazing Thai place that made the best soup and strained it and, like you added the chicken stock. Perfection. Ty for the tutorial.
NO asian markets in my town...for those that can't get lemongrass, lemon zest is a pretty good substitute. Use lemon/lime leaves as a substitute for kaffir lime leaves. Use equal amounts of ginger to substitute for galangal. You can make chili oil with dried arbol chilis and a few spices throw in. Thanks Josh! always love your videos
One of my favorite soups... Ever
Ok - just found your channel. I have been friends with several people from Thailand and here is what I learned about Tom Kha Gai. First, it was pronounced (to me) as T-H-om K-H-a Gai. (Emphasis on the "H"'s) Don't ask me why - that is just how they pronounced it. Second, none of my friends ever took the veges out. The soup always came with the onion, lemon grass, sometimes with ginger, sometimes with the other - the chicken, mushrooms, sometimes bell pepper, lime leaves, sometimes with cilantro, and they used dried and crushed Thai peppers (You could add your own). Usually they rated the dish from one to five for hotness. I only ONCE tried the #5 and spent two hours eating the soup. John (at Thai Jasmine in Houston - now closed - John and his wife retired) offered to change it out but I sat there and ate it. Thai Jasmine also did our wedding rehearsal dinner. I paid for 300 people to come and only about fifty did. We wound up giving away a lot of food and taking home entire pans of Thai Egg Rolls, this soup (had to go buy a container for it) and gobs of Yellow Curry Chicken. Good times. But thanks for posting this recipe. I'm on Social Security - but I'm going to go get everything and make it - but I'll probably leave the veges in as well - for old times sake. :-) Keep doing great work like this! I loved it! :-)
Thanks for a pleasant read :)
This video was at 1000 subs. Three years later- nearly 5 MILLION. You really did the damn thing 🙌🏼
Currently binging all your videos, it’s great to see how far you’ve come
This recipe needs more views. This soup is insanely simple to make and tastes so good. Maybe a good remake idea?
My all time fave, have half assed it just from attempting to copy what I've taken out from local Thai restaurant with so so results. Attempting to grow as much of the ingredients as I can but ginger, galangal and turmeric don't seem to like my climate, too dry I think. Lemon grass is easy, kafir lime I'm starting, other citrus thrive for me.
I am supposed to be working on my finals, but I somehow decided to take on thai cooking. It came out pretty good tho
I'm Thai and this is one of my most favorite thai dishes!
Is it sweet or savoury?
Been craving this soup for days. One place has the best, I need it. Must learn to make.
Went to Thailand last Feb & absolutely loved Tom Yum & Tom Kha Gai! Gonna try making soon following your recipes.
Oh dear, 1000 subscribers in 2018 and look at you now in 2021 with 4,75 million subscribers.
I have been watching Joshua for over 24 month and never noticed how much subscribers he gained in the last 2 years. Good for him. 😊🤗
Love all the videos and joshs personality
Just made this dish and could not be happier with the outcome! Thank you for such a great video!!!
I’m moving to Thailand and want to impress a housekeeper/chef that worked for my family 11 years ago. Her tom kha gai and som tam where so good I still remember them from back when I was 7 and last ate her food.
Ive made this recipe several times its fantastic and i have subed the galanghal for ginger i think its turned out great.
just found this cannel, been watching non stop.
from thailand btw.
been watching you for the past year man and just scrolling to see what i have missed in this vid you hit 1000 subs now your well over 1m keep up the fantastic work
Spicy galangal soup in authentic they will seasoning with salt and granulated sugar because they won't change the color of soup out of white color if you add palm sugar / brown sugar and fish sauce or soy then will change color to brown suddenly and that make bad smell. and they won't add basil in this type soup. But your cooking this menu so yummy :) this my recommendation and I love your channel so much. thank you.
I’ve been eating way too much this soup I might as well, learn the recipe and make it myself. This looks delicious!!!
Just a little over a year later & BOOM!! Over 221k subs! AMAZING!!
Congrats! You deserve it!
4 months later, and its doubled!
2 yrs later and a million
2020...1 million
2020 4 months later - 2 million
July 2021 and 4 and a half million subscribers
Woah March 2021 throw back to when you only had 1k subscribers ! You have done a great job Bro!
It's hard to imagine the rose to stardom over the last five years. Great job man !
Damn, can't believe how much your channel has grown. I remember you had like 100k subs when I started following and I'm glad to see you're doing much better! Love the content!
4 years ago you had 1,000 subscribers?? And now you are almost at 8M?? Nice man!
Wow you had 1000 subs a year ago and today you have 1 million.
You are doing something good.
Usually what I’ll do for the chicken is sear the outside of it first, just so it’s got some different texture to it, maybe also use some chili paste for added flavor (kinda using it the same way you’d use tomato paste), but this is a banger recipe
Pretty close to the recipe I use. I just replace fish sauce with soy sauce as I'm allergic and add more mushrooms.
You've come so far congratulations!!! You're my favorite foodtuber!!
Your thai pronunciation is great, lots of love from Thailand
I'm obsessed with Tom Ka Gai. Can't wait to make this at home. Thank you.
Funny to hear you mention 1000 subscribers now that you’re a RUclips sensation. Great looking soup. I ate this stuff everyday in Thailand.
Been watching your videos for awhile now. I made the Morel chicken pot pie. AMAZING. This is my all time favorite soup and I had to come to you to make sure it hit all the marks. You are my favorite, please don’t ever change 😆❤
I love tomato in mine as well
oh damn how this channel has grown so much omg
Watching your vids from the beginning now in Nov2020. YES ! THIS IS MY FAV THAI SOUP TOO. You truly are a wise man!
I followed this recipe, except I reduced the amount of fish sauce significantly. The amount you put in is waaay too much IMO, and luckily I have prior fish sauce experience. To your credit, you do tell people to season it with sugar and fish sauce, which hopefully is meant as a “season to your taste”. Thanks for yet another great recipe. I’ve made a few of them and they turn out great! I love the way you explain things. Super easy to follow and copy.
Thank you for the best Tom Kha Gai recipe!!
Jesus christ it feels eerie watching this 5 years later in comparison to his new stuff, still amazing video and i love this dish so I'll do this one at least once as well❤
Tom Kha Gai is pretty freaking good. My family buys it nearly every month as a treat. And we finish it everytime. But since we live near the beach now, we have the seafood version (Tom Yam Talay) and it's amazing. And I don't even like seafood that much! Ps don't say Tom Kha Gai too fast. Awesome recipe tho!
Gdamn Josh as a child…. Revisiting because I needed a solid recipe for this
I dont like coconut milk or candy that has coconut in it buuttttttt ive had this soup and i like it 😂
OHHHHHHH SUreeeeeeee. Maybe you just need the coconut milk to be in the right context. A.K.A. Tom Kha Gai.

This turned out awesome, as all your recipes do, so quick and easy 👍👍
It's so cool to see this OG video after seeing our Boi blow up. I just wanted a Tom Kha Gai recipe and got sent down a time warp.
I’m pretty much making a recipe from you every week!!! Making this tomorrow night!!!
I find myself liking the video before I even watch it, I already know it’s going to be good. Not one video has disappointed.
Tom kha talay (seafood tom kha) is what I get EVERY time I go to a thai place. I've always wanted to try my hand at making it! Just a matter of finding galangal root for me (I grow lemongrass).
One of my favorite dishes. Maybe one day will make it. Love your videos!
Ohhh God. It's like time travel. Man you've come a long long long way. Keep up the good work Papa.
Just watched your Tom Yum video. Though it is "yummy", Tom Kha Gai is THE BEST SOUP EVER!!!
Damn, back when this was still just a baby channel. We love to see the growth.
2 years later you have 1 mill. good job man
Been binge watching your stuff for a while. Dig your style, man! Keep it up.
Young Joshua without a beard and a cute baby face is so precious
Watching this 3 years later when Josh has 5 mill subs...
Dam
Congrats on 1000 subscribers!
Just found your channel through this video. Kind of amazing this was when you hit 1k and you are currently at 7.76m.
Pro tip:
1. Smash the aromatics with a rolling pin to help release more aroma. Doesn't need to be macerated.
2. Chicken with skin on, like thighs or wings and drumette release some fats into the soup, making it even richer.
3. Traditionally parts with bone are chopped with cleaver to expose marrow for extra broth richness but some prefer not to use bones because marrow can cause soup to brown or darken slightly.
Remember when you just hit 1000 subscribers? Amazing job sitting at 3.39 million!!!
Since I have no Asian market, I’ll use lemon and lime zest instead of lemongrass and kaffir lime.
I do Tom Kha with Crait and it's AMAZING!!!
You can add fried whole dry red chili to amplify the aroma 🔥
Perfect.. perfect... perfect... thank you so much ..
Aww 1,000 subscribers!!! I've been here since 500k 😊😊😊🥰
Miss videos like this
1000 to 6.5 mil in 4 years!? Congrats !
Looks delicious even!
Love the new book.
BDE from being excited about 1000 subs to 3M. Props to you my guy!!
aaaand he finally reached 1m!
I’m here because it’s 2020 so of course I can’t find Amy’s best soup ever... Thai coconut
Can’t believe you were here and now at 3 mill?!
Oh my god. You only had 1000 subscribers. Man you really grew.
I got to know Joshua’s channel after I found his fermented mustard video 4 years ago or so. Now he has 8m Subs. Damn.
Damn congrats your channel grew fast!
ต้มข่าไก่: Tom or ต้ม means boiled , ข่า means galangal, and Gai or ไก่ means Chicken. By the way, when we serve this soup (same as Tom Yum too), we normally leave those lemon grass and galangal. Although it is easier to take them out before serving them.
For the bruising I'm used to seeing someone use the wooden pestle from the thai style mortar and pestle to smash it.
I really like his old pot...
I’m on a binge watching rampage and no one’s gonna stop me.
