Update! No, I didn't receive a new 4N. What I did receive was an amazing set of large prints from all angles of Nuno's 4N from Lisa Johnson of "108 Rock Star Guitars" (full story with a glimpse in my community posts here on RUclips). The photos haven't been published yet and I don't have permission to share them in full, but for those few people who have expressed doubt regarding my story or who do not think that the woodgrain fingerprint is enough to know for certain, these prints do clearly show the serial number and signature on the back of the headstock of Nuno's own guitar. There was never a doubt in my mind, but for others, there will no longer be any doubt as well once Lisa publishes her new book. Thank you all for the amazing response to the video (even the doubters)! It's still my hope that one day I can try out a new 4N for myself, if only to offer my reaction as someone who was intimately familiar with the feel and tone of the genuine article.

But a divorce can do wonders for any artist! Their misery only helps us, right? My only experience with an N4 was at a music store in australia in mid 90s with a USA built model that looked unloved on the rack. I cant say if it was a 'davies' but it sure felt odd to play. its washburns prerogative to make money, but each subsequent release dilutes to brand further until we get into EVH territory, with so many new signature models that they become common as muck. anyway, cheers!

Crazy story. I’ve been a Nuno fan since high school, now I’m an old lady. Some day I will buy the N4. I’ll keep my signed hand made Extreme jacket next to it. Yes, I met the band back stage since I was the crazy Extreme lady. They were gentlemen:)
If it has an open-pore finish that could be why it sounds different acoustically, or at least to do with finish as it can make such a difference. My Jackson JS22 in natural oil allows the body to not only vibrate more freely than a poly finish but allows the wood the breathe, it makes such a difference and I love it.

I did get a set of large photographic prints of my old '4N' by the photographer who create the 108 Rock Star Guitar book, that was unexpected and extremely nice. Lots of close ups. Those prints will be published in her next book, but that won't be until 2021.
It is absolutely crazy how distinguished the N4 is even in your demo I would have guessed it was a N4 without watching the video before bill Lawrence pickups are amazing no doubt

Awesome Video! Who's the clown who gave this a thumbs down? I bought my 91 N2 new at the end of 91 IIRC, and still have it and listening to my son play it as I'm typing this right now. When I bought my N2, they had the N4's right beside it which I really wanted but I was 16 and could only afford the N2 which I paid 680+ tax (cad). I think they were asking 1050 or something for the n4.....Still kicking myself, but love the fact that I still have the N2 and will never let it go. Been keeping my eyes peeled for an N4 for years and years now, but seems everytime I see one, the prices go up and up and up and......UGH!
I used to know the luthier that made Nuno’s first few personal Washburn’s. He was a master builder for Ibanez, BC Rich, as well other companies that had custom shops in the L.A. area. He lived in El Monte CA did some side work out of his garage. One night I go over to pick up a guitar he was working on. We walk back to the garage where he did all his work (routers, drill presses, etc) He shows me a few one piece Nuno bodies and Stevens necks and says he’s building some protos for Nuno, right there in his garage! Will never forget that. That guy also designed and built Paul Stanley’s personal Silvertone model. I believe he may be back with BC Rich, making their top of line guitars.
Awesome. First time hearing about that. Who knows, maybe he did a few others that didn't reach Nuno ... like some that went to tradeshows. If that's true, it could explain why Nuno gave it extra attention in 1993 when he signed it and why he decided to buy it 20 years later.

I've had my 1992 Davies Washburn N4 for 29 years now. Cost me 1000 bucks back then and it still plays and sounds like a custom shoppe compared to some of the toys made today :)

Thank you so much for this. I heard that the 2006 is the most coveted year. Is it because that year has both the string tree and those reverse mounting screws for the locking nut (back of headstock)? Agreed with what you said about the sound while strumming it acoustically and the comfort. I have played the Washburn N4/4N models on and off since the early 90s and was always a secret fan. Never bought one though which I regret. Money always tough though. 💯 A very original amd unique interpretation of the Strat shape. I still don't understand the whole "Davies" version though.
Really similar. I walked into Allen's music in Australia in 91. There was a newly released Davies n4 that was sold but on display. I asked the guys and they said they'd import one but I'd have to buy it first. I thought it was the most amazing thing so I committed-it was $2100 Australian dollars in 1991. I traded a really pristine Ibanez RG560 signed by Warrant and every cent I had. Despite some buyers remorse I have owned this guitar since. I got a light french polish done by a professional to protect it from dirt and sweat. It looks and plays exactly like the day I bought it but it doesn't get played much which is why I'm selling it now.

I put mine up for sale but didn't really want to sell it unless I found someone who was really prepared to pay for what it was worth. I put $10,000 on mine ( Australian) which is about $8000 USD. If you really want to sell it you could ask for around $6000 USD to see it go-thats probably towards the top end of pricing. I've owned mine for 19 years it's in pristine, near new condition and I won't part with it for under $10000 Australian.
Hi Joe. I also had a Davies version. Was one of the best playing necks I ever laid my hands on. The weird part is, contrary to what one would expect from a fast playing guitar, the neck was not a "slim" profile at all. It was actually kind of chunky, but it just fit my hand so well! I got this guitar used for an absolute steal ($275) because the seller either didn't know what it was worth or just needed the cash. I played the crap out of it from the early 90's up until about 2011 when I sold it on E-bay. Had I known what it would be worth today, of course I would NEVER have sold it. But I did indeed sell it (for $1600) in order to buy a Les Paul which I truly love, but I wish I could have gotten it another way. I REALLY miss that Davies N4. I liked everything about it except the tone of the bridge pickup, which seemed a bit too shrill to my taste. Anyway, good story. You seem to have a touch of remorse but, like me, you are NOT completely devastated by it. Probably just wish you still had it sometimes when feeling nostalgic.
The only time I have any feelings of wanting to still have it is when I see pictures and videos of my exact one being played by Nuno ... which is all the time! LOL

Cool name for the band😎. I own one. These were rare in the UK but I played one back in 90's in Music Exchange in Birmingham UK and loved it. I brought one 2nd hand for £800 and it's hanging on my wall. I was told it was an early 91 model and got it with the metal washburn flightcase. It is a pain to do truss rod adjustments. Love the oiled neck. I sweat buckets so I prefer oiled necks to varnish. My fav neck is on my Ibanez FGM DY100 tho which is a varnished neck. I buy signature guitars as they hold their value.
Washburn used kahler stryker hardware for the tremolo and the nut. I still have the first wash burn I bought back in 1991. Mine had your typical licensed Floyd Rose but the higher and Washburn stuff had kahler.

from watching the rest of this, mine t has the deep neck pretty much a mm to the pick up, 2 peice body though... but kaylar trem, stays in tune great, original tuners, dirt and scuffs mske it alive and cool looking. ive bought and sold lots of guitars but is one id never sell, love it.
I purchased an N24, which is betwee an N4 and an N2 at a pawnshop for $200. I saw it from across the room and knew instantly what it was and b-lined up to the rack to try it out. First off, Nuno was mu guitar idol back then as I was brought up on 80's shred like Yngwie,Satch and Vai. But when I heard Nuno and his percussive, melodic style I was hooked. Anyway I guess the pawn shop thought it was an N2 and let it go for 2 bills. It was a great playing guitar with a high mid attack that I love. Now that I'm in my 50's and really only play in my room just to stay relevant, I gifted the guitar to a freind that gigs, plays and would make a good home to the N24. Oddly enough I still look at N4's as a guitar Id love to try. And a JEM... Thanks Joe for your story, very cool
Man , I've been wanting one of these since the early 90's. I still have my Kramer Nightswan that I feel the same way about. It's irreplaceable for me. I wouldn't have given up that 4N, I still want one however I've seen them going for upwards of 3-4K now.
I must say your music sounds amazing. My story is nowhere as interesting. I owned a tele owned by Tim Finn from an NZ band called split enz. I sold it back in 06. I regret it sometimes. It was an old 50s tele with a bridge humbucker and a coil tap switch. The switch plate was flipped the other way, the coil split was installed in place of the tone knob. I had gotten it repaired with a new nut, a push pull tone knob/coil split combo. I used to play live back then. Then I got carried away by newer fancier looking guitars and sold this beast for rent. I miss it.
Josh Damsma I just sold his sister Treza’s boyfriend, a pick guard And new tuning keys for his musicman bass. She told me they will be playing down here in a couple months, that’s the next time I’ll see Nuno.
I got one in 1994. And it's the biggest regret in my life selling it. I was 14 or 15 and got it brand new after buying a les paul and it was too heavy and I was afraid to scratch it as it was all black. They had the esp Kirk hammet used on the wall (the blue esp strat) I was going to get but then they had a new n4 and n2 there....and I had to have the n4... but the floyd style bridge as a kid was too much and I sold it. I bought one of the 2005 models and it wasnt even close. I saw they have the reissues out now which are supposed to be the 91 to 95 specs...may need to try one
That bridge is known as the Kahler Steeler... a VERY HIGH quality Floyd replica... The Steeler was manufactured with the finest materials and tightest tolerances right her in the U.S.A.... this also explains the Kahler locking nut.
Kristopher Heels I’ve always considered it to be the best feeling and operating locking Floyd system I owned next to the original Floyd. Definitely on par.

Not trolling, but why didn't Nuno just get Davies to make him 5-10 new ones and just pick the cream? I played Davies strat and teles at namm, and imho, they weren't great except for the cutaway. No great wood selection, neckshape,mojo, etc. All imo
@@matthias7455 I feel like I read somewhere that they made him 4 prototypes (2 in padauk). They handled the first run while Washburn tooled up. Looking back I don't think anyone could have known that the Washburn ones would be inferior. ....and man are they. I used to own a '97 one and it was such a disappointment. Looked great though.

I visited him last year and I thought it was really cool seeing the rest of the blank that made Nuno's padauk n4s. Great story! I own an Alder N4 with serial 910920 which seems like it’s 5 versions up from this guitar. It has the Kahler patent pending locking nut and Kahler trem. Over the years I have somehow lost the locking clamps and 3 little screws for them. The original floyd clamps don’t fit as they are bigger. Does anyone know where I could find replacements?
It's a shame that neither Washburn or Nuno ever included that story in their promotion of the 4N - an N4 guitar purchased and lovingly modified by You, that eventually made it's way to Nuno's hands just to become his main axe (partially due to said mods). That would be such a cool thing - isn't it what signature guitars are all about? It just seems that both the company and the man himself would rather this story not to exist, as if you weren't welcome in Washburn's and Nuno's grandeur. Heck, even Your comment on the matter on the last video about Nuno's N4 story got deleted - the one calling the interviewer out for saying Your story is fake without any sources for the matter. Anyways, phenomenal piece or rock'n'roll history!
Can you or anyone confirm which Bill Lawrence pickup these had? is it the 500L or 500XL? I read nuno used a 500L which is the more traditional output version? More like a old P.A.F of the two. it is 8K verses the XL's 12K output.

Thanks for asking for that. I might do that in the near future. There were 6 "songs" I think, and I'd have to dig them up from a CD or tape I have stashed somewhere. They were just the instrumental tracks though, no vocals were ever recorded. The whole thing was done with this N4 though and no other guitar.

Just got one of these into The Guitar Guru Network and it’s unreal!
Cool name for the band😎. I own one. These were rare in the UK but I played one back in 90's in Music Exchange in Birmingham UK and loved it. I brought one 2nd hand for £800 and it's hanging on my wall. I was told it was an early 91 model and got it with the metal washburn flightcase. It is a pain to do truss rod adjustments. Love the oiled neck. I sweat buckets so I prefer oiled necks to varnish. My fav neck is on my Ibanez FGM DY100 tho which is a varnished neck. I buy signature guitars as they hold their value.

Washburn used kahler stryker hardware for the tremolo and the nut. I still have the first wash burn I bought back in 1991. Mine had your typical licensed Floyd Rose but the higher and Washburn stuff had kahler.

from watching the rest of this, mine t has the deep neck pretty much a mm to the pick up, 2 peice body though... but kaylar trem, stays in tune great, original tuners, dirt and scuffs mske it alive and cool looking. ive bought and sold lots of guitars but is one id never sell, love it.
I purchased an N24, which is betwee an N4 and an N2 at a pawnshop for $200. I saw it from across the room and knew instantly what it was and b-lined up to the rack to try it out. First off, Nuno was mu guitar idol back then as I was brought up on 80's shred like Yngwie,Satch and Vai. But when I heard Nuno and his percussive, melodic style I was hooked. Anyway I guess the pawn shop thought it was an N2 and let it go for 2 bills. It was a great playing guitar with a high mid attack that I love. Now that I'm in my 50's and really only play in my room just to stay relevant, I gifted the guitar to a freind that gigs, plays and would make a good home to the N24. Oddly enough I still look at N4's as a guitar Id love to try. And a JEM... Thanks Joe for your story, very cool

Man , I've been wanting one of these since the early 90's. I still have my Kramer Nightswan that I feel the same way about. It's irreplaceable for me. I wouldn't have given up that 4N, I still want one however I've seen them going for upwards of 3-4K now.
I've got an original Kramer Nightswan too. I know exactly what you mean. No other guitar is like it.

I must say your music sounds amazing. My story is nowhere as interesting. I owned a tele owned by Tim Finn from an NZ band called split enz. I sold it back in 06. I regret it sometimes. It was an old 50s tele with a bridge humbucker and a coil tap switch. The switch plate was flipped the other way, the coil split was installed in place of the tone knob. I had gotten it repaired with a new nut, a push pull tone knob/coil split combo. I used to play live back then. Then I got carried away by newer fancier looking guitars and sold this beast for rent. I miss it.

I got one in 1994. And it's the biggest regret in my life selling it. I was 14 or 15 and got it brand new after buying a les paul and it was too heavy and I was afraid to scratch it as it was all black. They had the esp Kirk hammet used on the wall (the blue esp strat) I was going to get but then they had a new n4 and n2 there....and I had to have the n4... but the floyd style bridge as a kid was too much and I sold it.
I bought one of the 2005 models and it wasnt even close. I saw they have the reissues out now which are supposed to be the 91 to 95 specs...may need to try one
That bridge is known as the Kahler Steeler... a VERY HIGH quality Floyd replica... The Steeler was manufactured with the finest materials and tightest tolerances right her in the U.S.A.... this also explains the Kahler locking nut.
Kristopher Heels I’ve always considered it to be the best feeling and operating locking Floyd system I owned next to the original Floyd. Definitely on par.

Not trolling, but why didn't Nuno just get Davies to make him 5-10 new ones and just pick the cream? I played Davies strat and teles at namm, and imho, they weren't great except for the cutaway. No great wood selection, neckshape,mojo, etc. All imo
@@matthias7455 I feel like I read somewhere that they made him 4 prototypes (2 in padauk). They handled the first run while Washburn tooled up. Looking back I don't think anyone could have known that the Washburn ones would be inferior. ....and man are they. I used to own a '97 one and it was such a disappointment. Looked great though.

Great story! I own an Alder N4 with serial 910920 which seems like it’s 5 versions up from this guitar. It has the Kahler patent pending locking nut and Kahler trem. Over the years I have somehow lost the locking clamps and 3 little screws for them. The original floyd clamps don’t fit as they are bigger. Does anyone know where I could find replacements?
It's a shame that neither Washburn or Nuno ever included that story in their promotion of the 4N - an N4 guitar purchased and lovingly modified by You, that eventually made it's way to Nuno's hands just to become his main axe (partially due to said mods). That would be such a cool thing - isn't it what signature guitars are all about? It just seems that both the company and the man himself would rather this story not to exist, as if you weren't welcome in Washburn's and Nuno's grandeur. Heck, even Your comment on the matter on the last video about Nuno's N4 story got deleted - the one calling the interviewer out for saying Your story is fake without any sources for the matter. Anyways, phenomenal piece or rock'n'roll history!

I read nuno used a 500L which is the more traditional output version?
More like a old P.A.F of the two. it is 8K verses the XL's 12K output.

Thanks for asking for that. I might do that in the near future. There were 6 "songs" I think, and I'd have to dig them up from a CD or tape I have stashed somewhere. They were just the instrumental tracks though, no vocals were ever recorded. The whole thing was done with this N4 though and no other guitar.
