You keep saying that you don’t have any training in fixing cartridges, but have you watched tutorials, are you following repair channels on RUclips, did you ask a friend to evaluate your work 😉?
Thank you Riggs. Last year I bought the tool kit, your cleaning kit, and Bright Boy and it's been great. Brasso is too abrasive and what not. I'm so glad you recommend a great product for cleaning.

Shoutout to the TV playing Bluey in the background. If I'm not mistaken, it's the "dance mode" episode. The music gave it away for me.
Most likely with the Castlevania that won't boot the program ROM is bad. If it were the character ROM, it would have at least booted up.

The character data is RAM...different kinda chip...all the data in the game is in the PRG ROM.

I had a copy of Wayne gretzky's hockey that took 5 cleanings with brasso then isoprop to work. I couldn't believe it when it finally fired up. Haven't put it back in the nes since lol
I was watching the video thinking ... he really ought to try the Silent Service ROM on the Castlevania board to rule it out and then you went and did it. Great minds think alike.

the sad part is, even if you did get it working, it's the PRG0 version of the game which has crashing issue's. any cv1 cart with the white label nintendo seal has that problem...the black label (PRG1) does not...=P probably best just to dumpster them because they were made broken to start with =)

New cartridges should incorporate a hinge system so you can just open the cart fast.

I haven’t had a single cartridge not work by simply using .0000 steel wool followed by 99% alcohol
Maybe I'll try the steel wool on my next video.

(After I had knocked it off my dad's workbench in my curiosity and then stepped on it.) 😅
17:30 Ah, see, this is where _my inherent laziness_ would have saved me time and effort versus your thoroughness; Before I ever busted out my FR-301, I would have put a DIP test clip over the ROM and read it out to compare it against the known ROM... In all likelihood, it would have told me the chip's NG. 🙅♂
This evening I'm gonna crack open some SameGame SFC carts so I can scavenge their CIC chips...I've got a magicom that needs one. Later I'll come back and pull the SRAM, MAD-1, and 8M Mempak slots.

There was quite a few different PCB types for NES carts. There is a website called NESCartDB that has a list of every NES game with the PCB name and pictures of the PCB itself. It's a good site to reference if you ever have to do board swaps yourself.

Long time since I heard anyone say they were using a TV VCR combo I remember they weren't that good at least with the VCR part the tapes would always get stuck or if they had some problem you can never get into the VCR because of the TV sitting on top of it
You should make a game where you play someone that fits electronics
+1 bottle of Brite Boy sold here. It saved a copy of SNES Tetris 2 that I got off eBay, I swear the thing must've been dropped in a mud puddle at some point, just /caked/ with gunk. Nasty, but it works fine now!

@@AliciaMercado-ce6pj I have 3 different universal remotes, and unfortunately none of the programs on them function fully. Some do channel and volume, some also do info, but none let me change picture settings.

If the Retron 5 is bad is there a better clone alternative?
I wouldn't classify the Retron 5 as "bad", per say. There are definite quality control issues with some of the cartridge slots (I've known people that had to replace theirs due to either gripping too tightly or not at all) and at time the emulation can be buggy, but if you can get one they're not a terrible alternative to having a crapton of consoles all on the same shelf.

There is a lot of bad information here. The CHR chip is RAM, which means all the geaphics are stored in the PRG ROM.
I would always assume a bad RAM chip before a bad ROM, especially with early UNROM games from Capcom and Konami.
