Barack Obama might be the first African-American president, but he's also the first person from Hawaii to become the Commander-in-Chief of the United States. Landmarks of Obama's upbringing in the islands can be found throughout Honolulu.
On August 4, 1961, Obama was born at Kapiolani Hospital for Women and Children, located just minutes away from his grandparents apartment on Alexander Street. Obama's family moved into a single-story house in Honolulu's Manoa district. Located on University Ave. the house is within walking distance to Noelani Elementary School, where Obama attended as a child.
At age 10, Obama was admitted to the private Punahou School. His mother and sister lived on Poki St., however Obama lived with his grandparents on Beretania St. until graduating in 1979.
"Barry", as his friends called him, enjoyed playing basketball at Washington Middle School. His grandmother could watch him from their apartment balcony. Across the street is Baskin-Robbins, where Obama held a summer job.
Obama's historic legacy began in Hawaii. Both visitors and locals continue to rediscover these remnants of Obama's childhood in Honolulu.
