Millet Porridge
(serves 3)
1 1/2 tablespoons ground roasted soybeans (amzn.to/2XZPwpy)
1 1/2 tablespoons toasted sesame, ground
6 tablespoons ground millet (amzn.to/3fn3Z4F)
3 cups water
1 cup tofu or tofu sheets, cut into strips (amzn.to/2zxqV25)
1 1/2 cups greens, cut into strips
1/2 teaspoon salt, more to taste
pinch white pepper
pinch five spice powder (amzn.to/2ULCp9o)
pinch sugar, optional
optional - sweet potato noodles, seaweed, mushrooms
top with roasted peanuts, vinegar, soy sauce

This is called TianMo(甜沫) in my hometown or xiaomimianzhou(小米面粥) all over northern China. My mum used to make it a lot. She always mixed the ground millet well with a little bit tap water first before adding in to the pot so that there wouldn’t create any lumps. 😉 And she always put some peanuts in there to give it some extra crunchiness☺️ I never really noticed that we were having vegan food all the time🤣

I like millet, but I usually make it into a pilaf. I mentioned this once to someone and they looked at me funny. I didn't realize it was considered a "poor person's" grain, or had associations with "hard times." I just think it's delicious and hearty.
The tofu sheets look really good in there. I like soups and porridge like this one, very simple but nourishing

yum, first time I've heard of " porridge with vege"... but without ginger and garlic, and STILL sounds delish what the...yum
Yum i love millet and i love all the savoury porridges you get in Asian cooking.. congees / juks etc. We dont seem to do savoury porridges in the West (apart from salted oat porridge in Scotland). They dont know what they are missing out on! Creamy, hearty & savoury 😍
@@EastMeetsKitchen Ooo i love polenta! Il fry my mushrooms & spinach etc first then add my stock & some fresh tomatoes, the polenta & loads of vegan butter & boil & stir until its this bowl of tasty soothing comforting goodness haha!
That looks delicious. I’m working hard to integrate more wholegrains into my diet and millet for breakfast makes great sense.
I make millet for breakfast 1-2x a week. China used to only eat millet porridge but they eventually switched to rice to feed the amount of people.
Millet is universal poor agrarian people's food; my people eat it, too. Intrigued by this recipe. A nourishing but simple one for hard times. TFP!
