You are very good foreigner cooker.(Transformer to Thai) I have some advice for you to cook a great tom yum. Just some tactics to make its more recipe - At first, you have to add just some water, maybe 2 cups, DO NOT add water too much like you did because it made the soup not intense. - When you add tom yum herbs in boiled water you have to wait till the herbs are soft, like shallot, garlic, chilies tomatoes, tamarind paste, etc. These herbs can make your soup is sweet, sour and unique. - You should add shrimps at the last, texture of shrimps still fresh, firm and sweets. Love your spicy eating :)
This was fantastic! I had to substitute large regular shrimp for the freshwater prawns, because freshwater anything is hard to find in NY, but it seems to work. I've been looking for an authentic recipe for this dish for years, and this was definitely the one.
i don't know how i got here..but i'm glad i did. this looks absolutely delicious!! guess..i just found what i'm doing on saturday....watching ALL of your videos.
Hi Mark, I have been trying to find authentic Tom Yum Soup in restaurants in India but was unable to do so.I know the real taste because I have spent 8 years in Thailand. OMG Mark, made this soup this evening and it was sooooo good, my husband thought I should sell it! Hope I didn't bartardize it too much by having the prawns, chicken and baby bok choi; I followed the coconut milk recipe you posted but used the evaporated milk flow. We will be having that again and I'll be sharing. Thanks for sharing this, it is the best I've had.
Made this for dinner tonight for family and I gotta say this is the BEST soup I've ever had in my life! Not just best tom yum but best soup overall! Thank you so much for the recipe. ='D
Mark fantastic I will really try to make it for myself Thank you for posting it I follow you where you go I watch you all day and most of the night I have learn so much about food from you Thanks again
Hi Mark, I've never been much of a cook but you've inspired me to try out new dishes!! I've made the Tom Yum soup with Your recipe and it was just great!! The rice dish is next on my list.Thank you soo much for all the delicious recipes!!
This is my sister's favorite dish. I never new the secret ingredient was evaporated milk. Now I can come off as the cool little sibling trying to impress big sis. Thank you Mark.
yummy! I think this one is more special than the one I used to have in the hotel's or restaurants in Thailand. It has more richer ingredients. Thank you very much Mark. I will try to cook same as you
Have you ever tried coconut milk instead of the carnation milk? Tom Yum is the best soup I have ever had. each time I have it it just gets better. Tomorrow I;m going to visit my favorite Thai place, maybe I'll marry the chef, she's spicy
Thank you Mark for this awesome recipe. Made it the other night and it was amazing! Did not have limes at home so substituted with white vinegar and galangal with ginger. Lol! Very yummy. Will definitely cook it again with proper ingredients recommended. Thanks a million
Nice video. It's amazing how Tom Yum Goong is such a national soup that foreigners love. Always curious about what the ingredients were (but too lazy to research it), like that red chili paste speckles floating on my soup.
I made this today and it was sooooooo tasty. It's also so easy to make! I made your Green Thai curry on Monday too and that was also amazing, my friends loved it! Thanks so much for sharing Mark, I can't wait to make more of your recipes. :)
Mark Wiens love the cooking videos. Quick question. What does a traditional or typical Thai kitchen look like? I notice you use those open ring stove and where you cook seems to be a sort of outdoor area. Are the kitchens more or less an indoor/outdoor space? I know is some cultures the kitchen tends to be a separate building from the main living (house) area.
Typically the kitchen is an addition to the house that is built AFTER the house is built, the kitchen is usually built on the side of house or at the back.
from my experience (I'm half thai, my mum is from a rural area) the kitchen is somewhat separated from the house. our kitchen was "half" outdoors, meaning that the kitchen was part of the house but only had three walls, a door to it and a roof. my sister owns several big houses in a big city and she has a separate kitchen house. but I think that's only the case for richer people.
You make great videos and your recipe videos are no exception. I've had to watch this video a few times as it's so good. Makes me want to try to make this at home. I went to a new Thai restaurant yesterday and ordered their version of Tom Yum soup. Their website goes into great detail explaining how original their thai food is. Well I was very disappointed. I don't understand why chefs have to change a recipe that is already so close to perfection.
Love your videos, Mark! I've always loved food and cooking. After watching your channel, it inspires me to add another channel of food, travel and cooking like yours. Many more successes to you! :)
this was incredibly tasty! I added a little soy for added saltiness, rice noodles at the end and some toasted sesame seeds oh and coconut milk I had left over...so much flavour thank you!!!! xxx
Great recipe! I just came back from Chiang Mai and I bought some cool sets with dried ingredients like lemon grass, galangal, kaffir lime leaves etc. to be able to make Tom Yum at home! I am gonna try making it today! Hopefully it works! And by the way I checked one of the cool places, you have advised to visit in Chiang Mai, where they serve fried glass noodles with cabbage and some delicious red sauce! Thanks for making awesome videos Mark and Ying!
