    The lumber visualization tip was huge. I would have thought that shop was huge. I continue to under estimate the sheer pita a full sheet of plywood can be.

    Pool tables make great assembly tables, they are heavy enough to take a lot of pushing and shoving, they are perfectly level and they make a great addition to any man cave when not in use. I was the production mgr for a major sauna manufacturer for 15 years, cedar it excellent for a sauna, but be very careful with boards with knots over 1/4 - 3/8” as they can pop or fall out when the wood is heated. Also use the driest wood possible as it will shrink after assembly leaving gaps in the t and g joints. Nice shop!

    • @SalemWoodworks
      @SalemWoodworks  4 года назад

      Definitely agree on the pool table. When I first put the pool table in the shop years ago, I figured I was wasting shop space and would regret it... couldn't be further from the truth. Thanks for the tip on the knots. Will keep an eye on that when the time comes to put up the paneling. I have a healthy supply and can afford to be picky. The wood is definitely dry... it's been air dried for years, planed to final dimension and has been acclimatizing in the shop for months.

      Thanks! I realize that I left out an important detail about that workbench. The wood it's made out of came from trees that my father and I cut down from my uncle's farm and had milled by a guy who came to the farm with a portable sawmill. I plan to do more of the same sometime soon, so will probably post some videos of that.

    Great video Judd! Great to see your layout as I continue to brainstorm ideas for the overhaul on my dads shop. Anything you’d do differently about your dust collection? That’s the next big project for the shop overhaul!

    • @SalemWoodworks
      @SalemWoodworks  4 года назад

      The dust collection system is working VERY well. The only small change I'm thinking about is moving the duct for the planer so that it drops from overhead, so I can leave it connected without having the hose in the way. I'll likely tackle that as part of the rebuild of the chop saw station when I incorporate the radial arm saw. Of course I also wish the table saw duct went through the floor, but I'm not sure I care about that enough to bust up the concrete floor (I currently have to step over a 4" duct when I walk around the back side of the table saw). The switched blast gates are really convenient. Fully automated blast gates that open when the machine is turned on would be an upgrade, but I'm not sure the cost is justified, for a home shop.

    Very nice set up. Life has been good, hasn't it? Beautiful house, beautiful land and the means to improve. Only a fool would want more.
    The one little convenience I think is cool is the blast gates turning on the dust collection. I've watched a lot of shop tours and I'm not sure I remember seeing that before.
    One thing I have to ask, how tall are you? When you first walked into the shot at the assembly/outfeed table, it seemed like everything was way below waist level for you.

    • @SalemWoodworks
      @SalemWoodworks  4 года назад

      I have been blessed indeed. As for my height, I'm 6'4"... or was... at my last medical check up the doc informed me that gravity was beginning to exact its toll, and I'm now 6'3".

    • @SalemWoodworks
      @SalemWoodworks  4 года назад

      And yes, I like the blast gate setup. The only improvement you might wish for are the ones that are truly automatic and open (and turn on the dust collector) when they sense current to the machine in use. However, those are a bit pricey, and I'm quite happy with my setup.

    • @awlthatwoodcrafts8911

    very nice! gives me ideas for getting things setup in my barn. though with the cost of led's these days, i wonder why you didn't use led direct wire tubes instead of fluorescent tubes...

    • @SalemWoodworks
      @SalemWoodworks  4 года назад +1

      Was originally set up with fluorescent bulbs (were I to do it over, I'd use LEDs). The new fixture over the work table actually IS an LED.

    • @northernprod
      @northernprod 4 года назад

      as you have the bulbs burn out, you can replace with led (without replacing the fixture). they make tubs that can be just a direct replacement... or... you can do some re-wiring and pull out the old ballast and put in a tube into the current fixture as well. :-)

    • @SalemWoodworks
      @SalemWoodworks  4 года назад

      @@northernprod a reasonable plan. I'm amazed how long the bulbs have lasted. I installed 7.5 years ago and the bulbs are still going strong.

    • @northernprod
      @northernprod 4 года назад

      hah... i've had about the same use out of the ones in my pole barn (haven't had to do anything since 2008)... i'm having to finally replace them in the barn and going to led so i don't have any wait period for them to warm up in these michigan winters! :-) i switched the lean-to's of the barn over to led several years back and has been great.

    Very nice shop. Thank you for sharing this with us. I would say that there is a lot of dust hanging in the air. Almost as if there is a fog of smoke. You may want to blow out the hanging air purifier on the ceiling and/or the cartridges of your dust collector. I look forward to seeing some of your projects. Best of luck!!

      Thanks. Air quality in the shop is pretty good, particularly since I upgraded the dust collector. I clean out the filter and air cleaner pretty regularly. Hi, thanks for sharing. How do you source your timbers for your timber framing projects? Do you cut your own or do you have a local source? Thanks! (btw, I live just outside of Grand Marais and also took the build your own timeframe class in 2001...

    • @SalemWoodworks
      @SalemWoodworks  2 года назад

      I envy you your location. We fell in love with Grand Marais and the North shore. The first timbers came from the course itself, so from that mill just outside Grand Marais. Since then, I've cut my own from poplars growing on a friend's farm in Pennsylvania.

    • @mikehofer432
      @mikehofer432 2 года назад

      @@SalemWoodworks Thanks! I'm interested in your setup for transporting and milling the timbers. I'm planning an addition to our timber frame and deciding if I want to do my own. There are some mature poplar (aspen), on my land here. Curious to find out how they behave after milling.

    • @SalemWoodworks
      @SalemWoodworks  2 года назад

      I'm lucky in that my friend in PA has some good machinery available at his farm for moving the logs and lumber. You can see some of it in this short video: ruclips.net/video/4Y4AnqCmj9E/видео.html - He has two skid steers, one with a grapple bucket that makes it easy to handle the logs. Milling we have done by a guy who comes to the site with a portable band saw. To move the resulting lumber, I have a 20 ft trailer that I purchased since making the above video. That one shows a 16 ft trailer I used to borrow from my neighbor.

    • @SalemWoodworks
      @SalemWoodworks  2 года назад

      As for how the lumber behaves after milling I have a couple of suggestions. One is to make sure you have it carefully stacked and stickered and if possible strap the stacks down during drying. I got more twisting than I'd like because we were working with less than ideal hybrid poplar logs. For the timbers, make sure you box the heart when milling.

      Of course about a year after that, our neighbor applied for and got a variance to build a garage that didn't comply,. So, I learned that I could have gotten a variance if I tried. In retrospect, it's the best "bad" thing that ever happened. We love the addition and the basement shop.
