- Hey everyone! Here's the next episode of Brewster's Millions Of Rants with 10 Classic Rock Bending Licks. I've noticed a number of requests asking for string bending technique and refinement, and I also had the basic premise for this lesson, which was originally a Guitar Player Magazine lesson submission that I pitched about 4-5 years ago. They never approved this lesson, so I decided to take the basic idea and create this video for the LNL channel - so let's dive in!
String bending is one of the most common/popular techniques performed on the guitar (if not THE most common), and diligent practice of this essential technique will boost your frethand strength, control, and connection with the strings, not to mention a huge boost to the "feel" and conviction while you're playing. Needless to say, string bending is an essential, but commonly overlooked technique for many players out there.
The ideas shared in this lesson range from the beginning of rock music with the timeless string bending from Chuck Berry, extending all the way to other essential players and ideas, including guitarists such as Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, Ritchie Blackmore, Joe Walsh, Billy Gibbons, David Gilmour, Steve Lukather, and Eddie Van Halen - to name a few.
If you've been searching for a string bending-focused lesson, would like a refresher and fine-tuning of your bending technique, or maybe a player wanting to explore a variety of ideas from a variety of players and decades of rock music - this lesson is totally for you! Give this episode a view, leave some comments/feedback, and please subscribe to Late Night Lessons - THANK YOU!

Nice Dave! Great lesson! Not only are you teaching licks, but also the proper techniques to allow your watchers to step outside the lick to apply to their own styles! Some of my favorite bendy solos would be 'Firehouse' by KISS (early Ace) Renegade by Styx (Tommy Shaw). Other cool bendy stuff would be Vivian Campbell bending double stops or triads. Love you videos, bro!
I listened to a tune today on SXM and Ronnie Montrose was the session guitarist...the outro was amazing he did a unison double stop "ascending" sounded like it was sent from the heavens.."can't remember the tune damn"...maybe the SXM log will still have it!
Don’t forget Steve Morse
Polishing your frets makes a world of difference.
Where's Black Magic Woman? Southern Man?
Great video
Getting string bending down correctly makes your lead playing sound so much better !!! Thank you for this video !!!
It’s what gives you swagger
10 Classic Rock Bending Licks … Vol.1?😊
Davey’s got the bends, oh no
Love the bends in Rosanna... Lukather is the man. Great stuff, David!
I just listened to Hold the Line while driving and it’s deceptively simple. What a groove! And Luke’s playing is so melodic, tasty and subtle. He’s so great
Great tone and playing also on 'Lovers in the Night' !
Maybe you could have put Albert,👑💭2 Bad ..and you stopped writing out the Example,s
WHat's your signal chain for this? Great tone!
Make some more videos on this! It was great!!
Thank you, David
Lots of good examples of bending licks, this is a good start.
All valid info when I think of bends I think of King Edward and his MONSTER bends 🤘👍
Great video as ever Dave, laughed when I noticed the album cover changing on the wall in the background.
Great video! Love the string bends. Make more like this
Well done!
One bending Lick I am looking on for a Long Time is Doug Aldrichs Intro Solo Lick on Forevermore.
Great stuff Dave.
thanks Dave! do one of these on vibrato styles of players too (if you haven't already)
I'm guilty of stealing that Luthaker lick. It's so choice!
Just watched the video. And, yeah. You still kick ass, David😉
Thanks Brother Dave!
Gibson Les Paul fretless wonder made for jazz players. Hard to bend strings with tiny tiny frets. First I did when I bought one was to install jumbo frets.
Ten great examples … another player I’d mention is Gary Moore - he was an absolute master at bending.
Someone once told me when I was learning to play that I played like Gary Moore. Not that I was as good, or ever would be, just that my bending and vibrato were like him. I’d never heard of him at the time, so I got the Still Got The Blues album and Gary immediately became, and continues to be, my favorite player.
@@TheSpydersBand Gary was an incredible player - I was lucky enough to meet him and he was a really nice guy too.
@@derekclacton I never had the opportunity to see him live, which I regret. Same for SRV. In fact, I had a chance to see Hendrix and Joplin at a concert and didn’t take advantage of it because I had never heard of them at the time and tickets were an outrageous $7 U.S. Oh yeah, some guy named Carlos Santana was on the same bill.
@@TheSpydersBand A shame but at least there’s a wealth of recorded material to enjoy.
Totally beat me to it!! 😂
6:16 ♫ Blue Moon, you saw me standing alone... ♪
Oh if I could find a Telecaster just that color. Pick-ups Pick guard everything. Your playing inspires us!
Thanks Dave ... LOVE THE BENDS !!!
No SRV? That guy was the bending king!
And he played 12's or higher.
Yes with those wickedly thick strings as well !!
well, to be honest, video has "rock" in the title :)
@@ZgemboBeterovic fair enough.
You know the video is good when I'm making a face when you're playing!😂😂😂
I remember learning Luke's Rosana solo back from his Hot Lick Videos. Love is phrasing , note choice, bends. Killer! Great lesson.
The first part of that Clapton lick is just like the melody of, “Blue moon, you saw me standing alone…”
Always thought this when I learned this solo as a teenager
Clapton did it as a bet/Joke with Baker & Bruce while they were recording it in the studio
Angus Young
Man, I've been trying to do some old Warren Haynes w/ Allmans stuff and my fingers are KILLING ME!! Damn, string bending is eating up my already tough callus's.
That just means they need to be tougher, and this is going to do it, too. Keep up the good work. Soon you will have pebbles for fingertips. I used to have them, but don't play anywhere near that much anymore. Makes playing in general much easier, and makes a big difference in tone too. It's a major part of how the sound is in our hands.
Frets are very important for bending.
I went big stainless steel on a Strat recently and it makes all the difference.
❤ Hey man you walk the talk here. Other examples of ‘something like that’ would be great 👍 Thank you.
Just brilliant David B!!!🙏🙏🙏❤️❤️❤️!!! Thank you!!!! 🤘🤘🤘🙌🙌🙌🤙🤙🤙🎸🎸🎸👏👏👏
Essential stuff David :)
(And your tone sounds killer here!)
Right on David...
Another great lesson...I thought for sure u would do some Mick Ralph's/ Bad Company licks like Rock Steady...and some Skynyrd licks...
you are a great teacher, I await all your lessons
Duane Allman and Dickie Betts where always bending strings during their leads ....check out live at the Fillmore East album.....great lesson
Awesome! String bending is where our individual personalities shine... One name, ANGUS!... As guitar players, you cannot hear an ACDC solo and not know it's Angus Young...
Great lesson Dave. Love working on bends and ear training. Keep up the great work 🎸
...next Lick is from the MIGHTY STEVE LUKATHER..... A-b-s-o-l-u-t-e-l-y right! I love Luke. But funny enough, as challenging as his Solo's are, I am much more obsessed by his rhythm works. But for everyone who's interested in a very well crafted Solo from Luke here is a hint: go to Randy Goodrum´s RUclips-Channel and listen to his Song "I took a chance". I love when a high caliber player, like Lukather, is allowed to unleash his firepower...And by the way, there's a lot of bending to examine...really good bending, damned I wish I can do that - but I afraid that after all these years I am still sounding like -...me. Fine Video here, David. It was a lot of fun watching you, hearing what you play and listen to your explanations. Thumbs up!
Excellent bending and great tone. Very inspiring. Subscribing!
Hey Dave, I do understand why you didnt put a single lick from the master of the V, mr Michael Schenker. He deserves a whole lotta episode .
Good lesson here you should definitely do more like these. Top ten tap, top ten slide etc. You know what I'm getting at. You could definitely do another bend video. Like you were saying Beck would be great zak Wylde another, buddy guy etc. Well gotta run, thanks again for the time and knowledge, peace 🕊️🙏
Have you thought about doing live version tutorial of Jimmy Page for Heartbreakee ?
Awesome video thanks. I had fun for a while getting into three and four string bends. Attempts at imitating the pedal steel riffs gets crazy
Came for the "boomer bends" jokes, but was disappointed.
Modern rock and metal players don’t bend enough in my opinion they can play all the notes at a billion miles an hour but stop and put some stank on it every once and a while. You can tell all these old players by their bending and vibrato alone and I just don’t hear it in modern pitch corrected stuff
Awesome lesson Dave! It would be really cool if you went over some string skipping licks sometime too if you haven't covered them specifically already. they are definately a challenge and can sound really unique and cool!
You could be Matthias Jabs stunt double.
Great vid!
In my humble opinion bending is something you can tell the feeling in your fingers the half bends all of it. The tone is in your soul. Vibrate and pinch harmonics also
Would you ever take a look at the rock band, Ween? Sick guitar on them there songs.
Please read more 'Guitar Player' this is a very good presentation
What are you playing thru? That box in the lower right corner?
Thanks David for this awesome video 👏🎸
Cool licks great tips! 👍🎸🎼🇺🇸
Would have been cool to have a Gary Moore lick in there too 🎸😎
80% white guitarists
I find that most interesting
🤘🏻❤️👍🏻 Awesome video Thanks brutha!!
WAY TOO MUCH Talking, and NO TABS!... The LICKS are good but nobody's going to learn them by you TALKING!..
Learn how to use RUclips and you can fast forward through the talking, you also have ears (im assuming) and a video right in front of you that you can rewind so why would you need tabs
cool lick's and video. sub inc.

Dave, it looks like you're going to have to do 10 more great guitar licks from other guys like Gary Moore ,, SRV. Ronnie Montrose. Pat Travers, Johnny Winters and alike 👍🤞
No Hotel California??? C'mon. 😢
I’ve been a finger style guitaris for almost 50 years now. I’ve always played instrumental pieces. I do Beatle songs, like a June long, winding road here comes the Sun more of a mellow or rock sound. But I took a dive and a stairway to heaven and learn how to play the lead solo and that song, and there are a significant amount of bands in it also doing hotel California by the eagles instrumentally the solo has a lot of bins in it all the years of playing I’m starting to finally get into this . I just need to get a little bit better at it so I’m watching your video and I’m already beginning to learn a lot. I read music. I don’t play it by ear at all. I was encouraged to do that by two professional musicians, and I did what they told me. and now I’m getting more into rock just doing it in a Fingerstyle manner. Thanks for the video. I’ll be watching more of you appreciate it.👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼😁🎸🎼🎶🎵☮️❤️
Great lesson!! It’s funny in this age of infinite shred instructional videos, few talk about bends.
Anyways a couple more classic Pagey examples are Black Dog (4:00-4:12) and Stairway (6:27-6:31). Thanks again. Looking forward to next video already 😃
Nice lesson, string bending seems to have really peaked in the 1960s and 1970s when the British Invasion bands were trying to imitate the blues players. When I first started playing guitar, everyone would learn the "Iron Man" main theme riff, but later, I started to look at Tony Iommi's solo, and he had some whole step and minor third bends that were really expressive. Also, the solo for Steely Dan's "Reelin' in the Years" had some great bends, and the outro to Eagles "Hotel California."
Great lesson and stories David. An accomplished guitarist berating you always helps you get better 🙂 Thank you!
Loved this, so much I can apply directly to my playing - thank you!
Great fun - please do some more ! :-)
always practice the basics,,,great lesson and relearn
This is a great video. Thank you for posting. I feel a lot of players these days have forgotten to incorporate soulful bending in their playing.
