Aretha Franklin Rare 1990 Interview with Joan Rivers

  • Rare 1990 clip of Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin being interviewed by Joan Rivers. I found this clip on one of my mom's old vhs videotapes. The tape is old so the quality of the video is not great, but it's not bad, at least most of the video, i.e., there are a few dropouts in the video but they only last a few seconds. Also, there are a few parts missing from the interview, like the first few minutes, but overall, most of it is here. Also interviewed on The Joan Rivers Show are Mark McEwen and Muralidhar.

I love that Aretha was so content being as private as she was. She found a nice balance between being a public figure while not overexposing herself to the world. She's never harsh, but she makes it clear where her boundaries are. Along with her tremendous talent, I think that really helped keep people's interest on her artistry, and not so much her personal life.

It is amazing to me how some people who conduct interviews have such little knowledge about the lives of the people they are interviewing. I wonder if Joan Rivers is even cognizant of what it must have been like for someone like Aretha Franklin who was born and grew up in a nation and environment where Jim Crow and Segregation were state sanctioned. Aretha held back so much and exhibited so much grace during this entire interview.

All my love and respects to these musical legends of beautiful sounds and melodies. I am still speechless at our history. Watching this interview …. I listen to Aretha I listen to the conversation and it dawns on me that throughout all of this no one is thinking about the black men and women being killed. The black poor families and babies in the projects. Italians are hard workers too, as well as Dominicans and puerto rica a

This interview was really a wrestling match because Joan was trying to get Aretha to open up and Aretha was very guarded and defensive. However, we know that she was intensely private. So I understand that. So in my opinion you had to be a very skillful and tactful interviewer to really get a good interview probably person that very reserved.

Let's tell the truth. White people used to talk to people out of the sides of their necks back then. So many black artist are labeled difficult from Aretha, Whitney to Mary. They loved the stars like Diana who really just bended how they wanted them to.

The record companies pitted the younger Natalie Cole against Aretha Franklin (8yrs age difference) and the younger Whitney Houston against Aretha Franklin (21 yr age difference.
Mariah Carey against Whitney Houston (6 yrs age difference) and the younger Ariana Grande against Mariah Carey (24 yr age difference)
Whitney collaborated w/both Aretha and Mariah. Mariah eventually collaborated with Ariana Grande. Sadly, that never happened between Natalie Cole and Aretha Franklin.
